“Wounded Warrior” grifter busted in OR

| June 16, 2012

Dave sends us a link to the story from KTVZ News of an 18-year-old punk pretending to be a wounded Marine and claiming to be collecting donations door-to-door in Redmond, Oregon for the Wounded Warrior Project. The problem, of course, is that the Wounded Warrior Project doesn’t solicit door-to-door;

Officers contacted the solicitor, identified as Ryan L. Brashears, 18, in the area after the caller to police provided a description.

Police determined Brashears was not affiliated with the Wounded Warriors Project and had been claiming to be a wounded U.S. Marine and combat veteran, Chambers said.

Chambers said Brashears had received $70 in cash donations and another donation in the form of a check.

Brashears originally was from Mississippi but recently was arrested in California, Chambers said.

Brashears was arrested in Redmond on two counts of third-degree theft by deception and one count of third-degree attempted theft by deception. He was taken to the Deschutes County Jail and booked, then later released on his own recognizance, a jail officer said.

Of course he was only exercising his freedom of speech, because he’s in the jurisdiction of the Ninth Circuit. I’ll take a guess that he’ll not show up in court to answer the charges.

  1. NR Pax says:

My knee-jerk reaction is “draft him and make him serve” but I really wouldn’t want a scum bag like that in uniform.

  2. MMX0311 says:

There’s a bridge just outside Redmond from which this POS needs to take a flying leap.

  3. D.J. Wood says:

Bad part to me is it makes it harder for legitimate Veteran Charities to silicate donations thanks to some of these scammers.

  4. SomePeoplesKids says:

come on PAX, every service could use more full time latrine cleaners

  5. LIRight says:

Posted part of the press release on his Facebook page.

  6. Hondo says:

Gee, LIRight – why would anyone do such a terrible thing? (smile)

  7. PintoNag says:

Shame. He’s terribly young to be such a loser.

  8. LIRight says:

@Hondo, if my .270 could reach from where I sit…..well, you get the idea.

  9. Hondo says:

Don’t, LIRight. Ballistic testing is definitive. And I don’t think he quite deserves that, anyway.

Maybe a 2-year probation – served at Walter Reed instead as part of the janitorial staff – would be a better choice.

  10. ScalpelShepherd says:

Fucker. And he’s in Oregun. Maybe I’ll run across him some day.

  11. Tman says:

Well, I guess going around collecting donations for something like Wounded Warrior, is a lot easier to fool people, since one does not necessarily have to be in uniform and whatnot. One just needs something ‘official’ looking printed out from the internet and pasted on a collection can, and go walk around with a buzz cut and with a prepared speech.

I mean, in this internet day and age, news organization, reporters, everyday people, and even veterans organizations, continue to get duped by these fakes. It never ends.

The sad part is it seems to be getting worse, these epidemics of phonies both out for personal attention and those who use it for financial gain/fraud.

  12. mark says:

Damn, i just moved from that area! Could have been fun to look him up. Oh well, at least there’s a very strong (real) veteran’s community there that should take care of the problem.

I like the Crooked River Bridge idea…

  13. NR Pax says:

@SomePeoplesKids: You’re assuming he could be trusted with that responsibility. If I had to deal with someone like that, I would have had to keep a close eye on them to make sure they didn’t choke on the mop.

  14. Anon says:

Hondo – How dare you be reasonable and suggest a fitting reparation for this kid. It would clearly be more effective to shoot him, make him jump off of a bridge, or organize a posse to beat the shit out of him.

  15. UpNorth says:

Anon, how about one throat punch, no shooting, no jumping, no beating?

  16. Anon says:

UpNorth – Don’t let the kid off easy. Ask any Private what they’d prefer — a throat punch or two years of all-day latrine duty, haha.

  17. ScalpelShepherd says:

It says on his fb profile that he works/fights for ECC: Elite Cage Combat. I talked to the owner/proprieter. He says it’s not true.

  18. Anonymous says:

The kid lives in a total fantasy. I think he may have mental issues. If you watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4csmrazGWw he claims to have fought in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3LPe00r5G8. If you watch closely, the guy who is Ryan Lee has a tattoo on right arm near the shoulder. He would have also been 14 at the time of the fight. He says his phone number towards the end of the video 2282130507. I haven’t tried calling it but I thought I would post it for others enjoyment.

  19. Anonymous says:

Correction the tattoo is on his left arm

  20. Joe Williams says:

UpNorth, that is one throat punch from each Disabled Vet that he encounters.

  21. 10th MTN NCO says:

I befriended this snapperhead on FB and within minutes this jackwagon accepted my request lol! I proceeded to cut and paste this story onto his FB wall and within minutes I had numerous requests from friends & family members asking if this was true lol. He said and I quote “if helping out veterans & collecting money for them is a crime then YES I am guilty”. I had more than one family member/friend tell me they were disappointed in him.

  22. E6 type,1ea says:

After reading 10th MTN’s post, I thought no WAY could this guy be that stupid again and accept a friend request from someone he didn’t know. I gave it a go anyways, and whaddya know, he really is THAT stupid! Just got home, and haven’t put anything on his wall yet, but this is gonna be REAL interesting!

  23. E6 type,1ea says:

I put a link to the news article, and it was up for a solid 5 hours. He wrote a message calling me a dumbass and saying I had the wrong person. He has a post from Friday where someone says if he did the WWP thing, they were disappointed in him, and of course he denied it. Anyways, the FB profile linked earlier IS the correct one. He has me blocked, but maybe someone could get on it and send the link to his family.

This REALLY chaps my ass. Don’t fuck with the WWP. I have a lot of respect for those folks.

  24. Green Thumb says:

    This guy is a ballsack.

However, WWP refuses to “vet” their boys and girls. It looks bad for a large non-profit looking for and obtaining massive in-kind donations. Makes it easy for the shitbags.

They know better but play the numbers. Sad but true. And they do not respond to inquiries of malfease.

  25. Murdoc says:

Live from Helmand- We could definitely use a guy like him, to walk ahead of patrols, stomping his feet!

  26. Devtun says:

Pretenders before legal drinking age – thats damn impressive. People probably got suspicious when he told stories about exploits in Khe Sanh.

  27. tommysgirl says:

This guy just posted this picture of himself on August 5th… http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=132730633535990&set=a.107239502751770.10146.100003971615604&type=3&theater with the caption that says… “man i look good in a marine uniform to bad im going army”

  28. Just an Old Dog says:

kid is claiming hes going Marine Infantry in October. Then Airborne school.

  29. Green Thumb says:

  30. NHSparky says:

Yeah, not likely he’ll be able to enlist while he’s on probation. Just sayin.

  31. zummin50 says:

This POS just got arrested lastnight in Medford Oregon for sevearly beating a woman and strangeling her. Still posing as a Marine but now going in the Army. In Jackson County Jail now.

  32. zummin50 says:

The irony is that the woman who he beat is married to a real Marine who was badly injured in a training accident and is now 100% disabled himself.

  33. rb325th says:

Link to this assmunchers mug shot. He is on his facebook page claiming on Aug 10 that he was going into the Army.
This kid lives in a fantasy land somewhere, and it is not a good fantasy.

  34. MCPO NYC USN (Ret.) says:

Look at his photos … he is a roid abuser and fight addict. When he gets to prison … his new life as an inmate will revolve around him protecting his 18 year old ass from hardened criminals. I love happy endings!

  35. NHSparky says:

And when Marines find out that he’s beating the spouse of one of their own, he’s double-fucked.

No way in hell any recruiter with any sort of integrity let him anywhere near a MEPS or put him on deck. Even if the recruiter was “rolling donuts” for several months, no way in hell you put your name on that contract as his recruiter.

  36. zummin50 says:

Ryan LOSER Brashears f’d with the wrong people looks like he got about 25 Contempt of Court violations added to his loser list.

  37. USMCE8Ret2012 says:

Well, well, well. Based on his FB profile, he’s off to recruit training on 13 October 2012. Must’ve gotten a waiver after his last run-in with the law. Hopefully the DI’s at MCrD San Diego will thrash his ass to oblivion.

  38. Nik says:

He’s crazier than a bag of cats. I looked at his FB. He’s all over the place. Marines, he says he’s off to MCRD in Oct, but also says he’s going to Army boot camp on Oct 3. His profile says he’s married, but in his about he says single.

  39. SandyOregon says:

WOW- this is crazy. How is he a Marine if he never went to bootcamp? and if he did, did he finish it or did he get kicked out? You have to earn that eagle, globe and anchor through the bootcamp, to be called a Marine.
    I”m a spouse of a Marine (13 years).

  40. He has had a name change,
And moved across country to Tennessee, where he finished high school in 2012? H’mmmm.
Also, for you marines out there- How many Marines call themselves “Soldier”? Ryan TheSoldier Leigh, even lost his last name in that long cross-country move.
Who here has access to the Marine database?

  41. I just sent him some love, with this:
Dude, you are from Tennessee? I didn’t know that marines call themselves “Soldier”… Most marines I know call themselves “Marine”.
And your photo looks just like that guy Ryan Leigh Brashears mugshot, in his arrest for Coercion, strangulation, harassment, that also got busted in the Medford Oregon area for grifting, soliciting for the Wounded Warrior Project falsely. Have you been following yourself at “This Ain’t Hell”? Here is the link. Read all about yourself: http://thisainthell.us/blog/?p=30411

  42. It seems, from my online conversation with the marine wife that this turd assaulted, was his girlfriend, and now she is defending him, even defending the fact that he is falsely claiming to be a marine while she is married to a marine. I “shared” a photo of him and her, taken, as usual, with a phone using the bathroom mirror, and she said that she didn’t want her children to see it. As I got information from her, it became apparent that she is in full support of his crap, and most likely, doesn’t want her husband to see the photo. She said that she n husband have reconciled a past difference. Whole lot of Kyle Barwan M.O. going on with this one.

  43. Anonymous says:

He is in California and was arrested again this morning in el cajon californina eventhough he’s young he knows what he is doing, he is violent scary, and a stalker, hopefully the restraining order sticks,he recently got the name of Brenda the real marines wife tattooed on his arm, he is psycho!!!

  44. Ex-PH2 says:

@49 – If he’s as bad as you say he is, why isn’t someone turning him in? He sounds like a complete psychopath — doesn’t care who gets hurt as long as he gets what he wants.
