Absurd Manning claim draws absurd response
Remember the other day, we mentioned that Breanna Manning threatened to kill itself with the waistband of his Wonder Woman Underoos? Well, apparently some of the folks who were responsible for guarding him thought it was funny, too, according to Sky News;
…the chief legal officer at Quantico at the time, Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Greer, made light of the underwear episode in an email, composing a rhyme in the style of the popular Dr Seuss books.
The message said: “I can wear them in a box. I can wear them with a fox. I can wear them in the day. I can wear them so I say. But I can’t wear them at night. My comments gave the staff a fright.”
Marine Colonel Robert Oltman, the officer in charge of security in the brig, responded to the email with the signature, “Sam I am,” another Dr Seuss reference.
During his court testimony, Mr Coombs asked the security chief if it was “funny to you that Pfc Manning was being stripped at night?”
“No, it was not, it was a very serious issue,” Col Oltman replied.
A prisoner had committed suicide a few days before Manning was incarcerated, so I’m sure they took it seriously when Manning said he’d kill himself with his Pooh Bear Underoos. of course, the defense attorney brings this up to garner sympathy for Manning, but, the former soldier is a caricature of what we expect from traitors. He wants everyone to call him Breanna, he licks prison bars and dances in his Finding Nemo underwear, lifts air weights and draws the Code Pink/VFP clowns like flies to shit. I guess the only thing missing was a Doctor Seuss rhyme.

No expert here, but as the Manning saga continues, I can’t help but wonder if anyone from the staff, including Col Oltman, will be held accountable for these actions (e-mail – whatever else comes up) somehow? It would be icing on the cake for the defense counsel as Manning continues to make a mockery of the whole situation. Interestingly, PBS FRONTLINE did some investigating on Breanna some time ago. My last Brig Runs were at Quantico 2001 and 2002 … we ran from Naval District Washington to Quantico almost daily and return.

Regarding Sand: Marines train for combat in “every climate and clime”. There’s more to Marine training than amphibious assaults and standing guard on a ship.
Regarding Vietnam: Don’t blame the Marines, and none of the other services for that matter, because of the policies and mistakes made by civilian leadership.
Regarding Iwo Jima: Go back and learn some history. Iwo Jima wasn’t just “a rock”. Losing Iwo meant a disruption in Japanese supply lines as well as providing a place to facilitate American air strikes. Also, the Japanese used Iwo’s radar to warn of impending American air raids.
When you consider the amount of time the Japanese had to dig in and fortify, and the mentality of a force where out of 22k, 21k+ were killed in combat, any reasonable person would understand that what was done there was impressive.

I just returned from a deployment to Afghanistan (I’m sure you will tell me that I ran away, like I had the option to stay longer if I wanted too). While there, I did not see the Marine CORPS run away from anything. In fact, I saw brave men leave the wire (vehicle mounted or foot patrol) on a daily basis. Regardless of how they moved around the AO (that’s Area of Operations, don’t want your brain that was rotted by CNN to misunderstand me)these Marines ALWAYS moved toward the sound of the guns, meaning they always went to where the enemy was.
So in the nicest tone I can muster, in the most respectful way I can say this, with the most sincerity and heaviness of heart I make this statement to you…

With all respect due to Adm Pratt, he was wrong and history proves it.
You see, Iwo Jima was an integral part of the plan to drop a couple of war-ending bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was to be an emergency landing point in case anything went wrong.
More than that, thousands of strikes used Iwo as their launching or refuelling point. They were using one side of the island as an air base while they were still fighting it out on the other side.
And they didn’t get 10 days of shelling. They were given three. And they were given orders. They went into a deadly situation so others wouldn’t have to die and suffer. They put their lives on the line in service to others.
In the end, it’s easy to armchair quarterback the heroics of others. It’s simple, with history acting as hindsight, to denigrate the courage of others. It’s facile to plan and strategize with vision unobsfuscated by the fog of war.
It’s another matter entirely to face down danger because of the greater good. It’s another matter entirely to take the lives of men you respect and admire and know that some of them will die, because of the necessities of war. It’s another matter entirely to knowingly put yourself between your enemy and those you’ve sworn to protect, though you may die.
One is a matter of academia. The other is a characteristic of courage.
If you want to call our civilian leadership foolish, fine. I may even stand with you. If you want to call into question the decisions of military leadership and point out a better way, fine. Back it up with more than insults.
But if you want to denigrate as “pathetic and stupid” those who have sworn to protect you and your way of life, you’ve proven yourself to be less of a human being than person you decry as “pathetic and stupid”. At that point, I stand with TaticalTrunkMonkey in his offering.

Because I KNEW people who were DRAFTED during the Vietnam War, including some from my high school graduating class and some that I went to church with, I can assure anyone who asks that the draft was issued by the ARMY, and NOT by the Marine Corps. If young men received a draft notice, they had XX weeks to report to the nearest induction office, and a great many went voluntarily into the US Navy, the US Marine Corps and the US Air Force.
Those three branches of the military DID NOT DRAFT ANYONE. It was an alternate CHOICE. As Zero will testify, it did not necessarily get you out of being sent to Vietnam.
I sometimes think that the ‘tude displayed by bobc’s generation of slackers could be quickly dispersed by some serious hours doing KP and PT under Sergeant Hulka or Gunny Guzman.
However, should bobc wish to do so, I’ll happily meet the little wet-nosed snot in an alley some place, just me and the dumpsters.

Twist–don’t forget that those casualty estimates were only for the first 60-90 days of Operation Olympic, and didn’t include casualties which would have been borne by US Navy assets.
Double that (and then some) for Operation Coronet.
