Four people at State dismissed for Benghazi

| December 20, 2012

The Washington Post reports that four folks at the State Department are being disciplined for the failures revealed in the report on the deaths of four Americans in the Benghazi, Libya consulate;

The highest-ranking official, Eric Boswell, the head of the Diplomatic Security Bureau, resigned effective immediately, the State Department announced late Wednesday. The three others were responsible for various aspects of embassy security and planning for Libya and the Middle East.

They were relieved of their responsibilities and were expected to be reassigned, said a senior administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Despite the fallout, Republicans who have criticized the Obama administration’s handling of the Benghazi attack called the inquiry tepid and the recommendations for punishment inadequate.

So, one guy quits and three others get reassigned – to what? Janitor? Go-fer? Or something else that their boobery can get someone killed?

“We found that there was no immediate tactical warning of the September 11 attacks, but there was a knowledge gap in the intelligence community’s understanding of extremist militias in Libya and the potential threat they posed to U.S. interests,” said retired Adm. Mike Mullen, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a co-author of the report.

Yeah no “immediate warning”, but there were requests over months before the attack for improved security, and someone ordered the military detachment out of the region in the weeks prior. I’m sure the panel “investigating” the incident was similar to the 9-11 Commission which arrived at it’s conclusions by consensus rather than the actual facts that were presented to them and we just read the sanitized version. Because, you know, consensus is what will keep us safe in the future.

It has to be that “do something, even if its wrong” mentality?

  2. B Woodman says:

They “fell on their sword” to save their boss Shrillary, who is the one that should have been either canned or executed.

  3. 2-17 Air Cav says:

@2. To say they fell on their swords gives honorable character to their resignations but honorable people, similarly situated, would have resigned when their immense failings were realized by them. They would not have awaited a report or the delivery of pressure to resign. That Clinton did not resign speaks volumes about her personally but is no reason for her subordinate incompetents to remain on the job. When one reads the summary findings of the investigative body, one wonders what the chief of security and others at State were doing or thought they were doing.

  4. Hondo says:

2-17 Air Cav: what they were doing was believing that a Skittles-shitting unicorn would appear and magically protect US embassies in the region. Unfortunately, that naive and asinine belief needlessly cost 4 Americans their lives.

And regarding accountability by anyone more senior in this Administration: “The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and (BUMP!BUMP!) round, round and . . . . “

I won’t be surprised if they get shuffled back into the political machine elsewhere. They may crawl out of the woodwork around 2016.

  6. UpNorth says:

@#5, Hey, why not re-assign them to the BATFE? That’ll work.

  7. Green Thumb says:

    Just four people? Thats it?

  8. UpNorth says:

Yeah, GT, Hillary has a “concussion”, so that can’t be addressed. Baracka is busy “being the president”, ditto.

  9. Hondo says:

UpNorth: Nah. They’d probably sell their sidearms on the Internet.

  10. Nik says:

Whether her issue is real or manufactured, her timing and recuperation are very convenient for Ms Clinton. She’s expected now to give testimony in mid-January, last I heard. That’s well after the fervor of the day, such as it is, on this topic in the media.

  11. Billmill says:

Can anyone in D.C ask the question of why they had drone video available during the attack and if there was video what was the intel and who sent the drone? Where did the drone launch from? ( Sigonella, Djibouti?) Common sense tells you that the drone was not a miracle by the hand of God into an orbit over Benghazi. This has to have been coordinated, mission planned launched and recovered. So once again I ask, why has no one asked and gotten details on the drone?

  12. 2-17 Air Cav says:

Nik: It didn’t take long for the shuffling. In fact, at least one who reportedly resigned never did. Security Chief Charlene Lamb, the NY Post reports under the headline, “Benghazi pealties are bogus,” just switched desks.
