How to not instill confidence in gun control proposals

| January 22, 2013 | 40 Comments

This picture has been bouncing around Facebook since yesterday and since most of you are sociopaths who won’t join us there, I thought I’d drag it over here to demonstrate how this discussion on gun control is going to go.

bayonet lug

It may even turn out that the picture was ginned up to show how stupid the media is (I can’t find a source and I’ve tracked it back through several sources), but it does look like something that would come out of the media. So the indicated attachment is a sling swivel, you know, so you can put a strap through it and carry it on your shoulder. It’s just that dangerous.

The bayonet lug is the protuberance in front of the sling swivel. If I ever caught one of my troops using their rifle like a spear, I’d have them pushing Fort Bragg to Georgia. Actually, it’s used more like a pike – something you hold on to rather than throw at the enemy. Never mind the fact that you can’t attach a grenade launcher to the sling swivel, you can’t attach one to the bayonet lug either.

EDITOR NOTE: I wrote this earlier today, but I suspected that it was fabricated by the pro-gun side. I held off publishing it until I could verify it’s origins. Turns out that that the picture came from the Chicago Tribune and they’ve since corrected the article that they intended as information for the masses. But, then journalists think they know everything about everything, so there’s really no need for a correction after it’s been published. We all learned something, didn’t we.

I was literally just about to email this one in. I love it when people act like they know best, and that I, and everyone else who thinks like me, am completely deranged/psychotic/stupid, and then throw this exact picture at me.

Couple of friends and I had a good laugh on it.

  2. The Air Force model you can mount a F16 there…..no bullshit swear to god!

and you still can’t fix stupid!

    SAR

  3. malclave says:

Cargo pants really should be included in any assault weapons ban. I don’t know about the current uniforms, but I remember cargo pants as an essential part of the Army’s Battle Dress Uniform.

That can’t be emphasized enough… BATTLE dress. No civilian really NEEDS that many pockets.

  4. 68W58 says:

Pfff-shows what you know, that’s where you mount the bayonet launcher. You think grenades are scary? Wait until seven inches of steel are launched in your direction.

  5. Anonymous says:

You learn something new every day I thought that is where you mounted the Q-38 explosive space modulator.

  6. Just Plain Jason says:

The loonie toons reference was me by the way.

  7. Jacobite says:

Can any of our lawyers or constitutional authorities here tell me anything about the Dick Act of 1902 also known as the Efficiency of Militia Bill H.R. 11654, of June 28, 1902.

Is this a legitimate additional defense of the Second?

I normally do my own research, but I’m being lazy here, and want to hear some different opinions.

  8. DetCord says:

No wonder I can’t get my sling to stay put, that thing is for the grenade launcher/death ray/bayonet/sword/flying squirrel launcher-holder thingy…

  9. pete says:

golly gee!! in 6 yrs i never knew i had the capabilities of launching my k-bar at a target downrange!! i think i shall go spank myself for sleeping thru this important block of instruction!

  10. Ex-PH2 says:

Malclave, if you saw me hunting snapping dragons in the bush with my camera, you would not say no civilian needs that many pockets.

So what you’re saying, guys, is that you don’t actually hold that gun by the barrel and smack people with the stock if you run out of bullets?

  11. Hack Stone says:

malclave, they will get my cargo pockets from smelly, overflowing clothes hamper.

  12. Green Thumb says:

I get what you are saying.

However, if you have to fix bayonets you are shit out of luck.

Better start praying to a “phony” Chaplain.

  13. Tequila says:

So, let’s say I mount a grenade launcher on the make believe grenade launcher lug, does anybody know which Wal Mart carries the grenades for it cause apparently my local guns shops don’t?

  14. 68W58 says:

Tequila-i”m sure the journalist who wrote the story thinks you can get them at gun shows (which are far too scary for him to check himself).

  15. Jabatam says:

    From the Chicago Tribune…link here:

  16. jerry920 says:

Wait a minute, isn’t that the mount for the heat-seeking, armor-piercing bullet sight?

  17. As I’ve said a bunch of times before, the gun laws are written by folks who:
    1.) Hate all guns
2.) Are afraid of guns (like clowns)
3.) Really want all guns banned and turned in
4.) Know nothing about guns because of all the above and they are hippies.

  18. RandomNCO says:

My hope is for an America that never has to see another bayonet/M203 massacre again.

  19. FatCircles0311 says:

Time to ban slings because the military uses slings.

  20. B Woodman says:

    JPJ,
That’s an Illudium PU-238 Explosive Space Modulator.
Sheesh, you’d think a guy would eventually learn to grab the right ESM off the space ship cabin shelf!! The Q-38 is the training modulator.

  21. Just Plain Jason says:

B Woodman I must have had my Pre-ban and Post ban mixed up…damnit!

  22. SFC Holland says:

@18, you need a candle light vigil if you want that change to happen brother. Speaking power to peace, or truth to power, something like that.

  23. B Woodman says:

    JPJ,
At least you’re smarter then the average libtard. You’re willing to admit your error, and you can learn.

Even though I’m no Mel Blanc, I used to keep my children entertained for hours doing a fair good Marvin Martian voice.

  24. AndyFMF says:

For what it’s worth….I gave you a “like”.

  25. Old Trooper says:

Yet, people will believe the bullshit without knowing that the Chicago Tribune knows less than Joe Biden about “assault weapons”.

  26. NHSparky says:

    What’s next–some newsie calling a P-38 a machete?

  27. USMCE8Ret says:

Fuckin’ gun grabbers can’t even make their point when they try.

  28. Shamus62 says:

@26 Thats actually a form of torture banned by the United Nations,….using a P-38 as a machete and trying to whack someones head of with it. Cuz it happens alot and stuff.

  29. Old 21B says:

malclave those cargo pants are dangerous. I know that I have at one time or another carried MULTIPLE HIGH CAPACITY 30 round magazines for my M-16 in the cargo pockets. Manditory spandex for everyone, you won’t be sneaking anything anywhere with those pants.

BTW, the Chicago Trib in their “correction” never did address attaching a grenade launcher. I know the M-203 does NOT attach to the bayonet lug and I can’t say I have ever seen a grenade launcher on the civilian market. So despite the Trib trying to deny they are promoting an anti-gun agenda it sure seems like that small addition is designed to spread unfounded fear.

  30. 2/17 Air Cav says:

Idiots. That’s the hellfire missile adapter.

  31. PavePusher says:

If you notice the paragraph directly above the “bayonet mount”, you’ll also see an incorrect claim about flash suppresors.

As I understand it, the flash suppressor is intended to reduce flash effects for the shooter. It’s just about physically impossible to eliminate the flash for anyone down-range, unless you mount an all-up sound suppressor, a beast of another order of magnitude.

Oh well, they’ll get one right eventually….

  32. Ex-PH2 says:

I really think slingshots make better grenade launchers.

  33. Robot Wrangler says:

@22 SFC Holland you didnt happen to be in Iraq around 04 with the 1st ID by any chance?

  34. PintoNag says:

@31 I think that’s what the problem with the flash suppressor is; I think the “suppressor” part of it is causing some kind of mental leap to another thing that goes on that end, a “silencer.” Two different animals, but the ignorant might not know the difference.

  35. USMCE8Ret says:

I noticed the correction, where Joe Knowles, Associate Managing Editor / Editing and Presentation says: “Let me say emphatically that this was a careless mistake, not an intentional deception nor bias. It is regrettable because we got a basic fact wrong, period.”

First, I think his explanation is hollow because I assume most everyone across the country knows that the Chicago Tribune, of all newspaper sources, has probably ran more gun stories than any other in that state. Secondly, for a journalist/editor to say “we got a basic fact wrong” is a sad testament to the professionalism of that rag. His title/job description tells me it’s his fucking job make sure stuff like that doesn’t happen in the first place!

Careless mistake? I think the Tribune needs to find a new
Managing Editor for the Editing and Presentation department.

  36. UpNorth says:

@#35. Our local Fox station, is owned by the Tribune Company, imagine what kind of bull shit we get disguised as news. One of the newsreaders went so far as to repeat Owebowma’s gaffe on “corpsemen”.

  37. NHSparky says:

    That’s the hellfire missile adapter.

Good for ONE use, anyway, and then you end up looking like the guy who got behind the RPG:

  38. DaveA says:

Thanks for this I haven’t laughed that hard since the election

  39. Twist says:

Thats where you load the heat seeking bullets that instantly cook deer.

  40. USMCE8Ret says:
