This Week’s Friday “Feelgood” Story

| January 24, 2013 | 9 Comments

For a change, this one doesn’t involve firearms.  But I think it still qualifies.

Poor guy.  He was unable to work, and unemployed.  He said it was due to his injuries while in the military.  He had a bad back and a “mental condition” that prevented him from working.

So he went down to the VA and applied for disability.  The VA took care of him – to the tune of about $200,000 in benefits.

There was only one problem:  after a while, the VA checked up on him.  And it turns out the guy was . . . well, lying.

While “unemployable” and drawing VA bennies, it turns out he had been working for a wreath manufacturer, as a fisherman, and as a painter.  Oops.

Yesterday, Richard Ramsdell Jr, age 38, pleaded guilty in Federal court in Bangor, ME.   He’s facing a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and full restitution.

Hope you’re reading this, Joe Cryer.  And I hope you’re looking over your shoulder.

You should be.

    How the?

Any Vet that’s dealt with the VA to get benefits know how ridiculous it is so how do these fakes continue to get them?

  2. USMCE8Ret says:

@1 – Sadly, I believe the answer to your question is: they spend as much time figuring out how to apply for and cheat the system as they do in weaving their sorid stories of derring do.

They have a sense of entitlement, and then some.

  3. Hondo says:

FatCircles0311: I’m guessing some combination of (1) faked docs, (2) false affidavits, (3) a lazy or compliant VA tech, and (4) persistence.

And the VA tech might not have been to blame. Some faked documents are surprisingly good, and some doctors will . . . let’s just say stretch the truth if it will benefit their patients vis-a-vis a government disability claim.

Hey did Cryer ever show up at your house to wreak bodily harm on you…I am an old broken down geek here but I would send him directions to my house if he wants to see someone who did have a classified job looks like….

  5. 2/17 Air Cav says:

    Why don’t I feel good?

  6. Chip@NASA says:

    @5 2/17 Air Cav,
Because he hasn’t offed himself yet.
    THAT’S a Feel Good!!!
/I really shouldn’t pile on but I can’t help it.

  7. Hondo says:

2/17 Air Cav: no excuse. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere. (smile)

  8. Just an Old Dog says:

Fuck me running. Assholes like this is why I’m finally just getting a pension physical 21 months after applying, all the while living from hand to ass.

  9. Flagwaver says:

Okay, after I don’t know how many months, I recently got a letter from the VA asking me to submit my treatment record and my original DD-214 or a certified copy. I have neither of those.

My medical jacket was lost in the hollowed halls of Walter Reed when I was shipped there from Germany. And, even though I got out in January of ’09, I have yet to see an official copy of my DD-214. All I have is a bad print job of my post-deployment DD-214 and the accompanying DD-215.

I’m over-qualified for any jobs the Army trained me to do, so I’ve been busting my ass as a janitor for pennies and barely able to make ends meet… and this DOUCHENOZZEL applies fraudulently and is granted benefits without anyone even frakking checking on his story. Hell, I don’t even have enough money for gas to get to my mental health appointments at the Vet Center twice a month (or once a month, for frak’s sake!).

This pisses me off to no end. Sure, I may have been a glorified courier during my deployment, but I was still blown the frak up in an IED and have a piece of plastic in my knee made by Hasbro that only causes me pain. And they are making me jump through hoops while the frakking posers are handed all this cash.
