Chris Kyle; RIP
Since I knew about it before most people, you’d think I’d have dealt with it by now. But I haven’t. I’ve been staring at an empty screen for more than two hours wondering what I could write. I never met Chris Kyle, but after reading his book, you get a sense that you have met him.
But, last night, I got a call from someone who wanted us to help the police find Kyle’s killer. I was stunned when he gave me the news. I have no idea who it was that called, but he had access to police message traffic, so, you know, I can guess. So I called the sheriff’s department and they confirmed for me that the incident had indeed happened, but they wouldn’t confirm that Kyle was involved.
But, anyway, I guess they caught Eddie Routh, Kyle’s killer. According to some of our Marines with access to the Marines On Line database, Routh is a corporal and a unit armorer and currently in the Individual Ready Reserve – that status you do before you get out of the service.
According to Fox News, Routh was apprehended near Lancaster, TX at about 9:30 local time last night after shooting Kyle and his neighbor in the back and fleeing the scene in a pickup belonging to one of his victims, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Now, if you don’t want to get pissed off, you should stop reading here. I cruised over the Huffington Post and read some of the comments those tiny-brained morons were leaving and, of course, it’s all about gun control and veterans. And of course, they tell us that Kyle’s death was karma for killing more than 150 insurgents. Twitchy logged some of the “tweets” from the Leftist ghouls yesterday celebrating the death and standing on his body for their political agenda.

The comments over at the Dallas Morning News article on Kyle’s death will also make you weep for humanity.
Joe-you can’t even get the quote correct, it’s “an armed society is a polite society”, but I get that accuracy and integrity are not your strong points. Chris Kyle went out of his way to try and help vets who suffered from PTSD. God knows why this lunatic shot him, but his willingness to try and help others speaks volumes about him. I don’t expect lefties, who suffer from the delusion that nanny can somehow make it all better, to appreciate real risk or sacrifice since their entire worldview is that of the coddled child. There aren’t enough “fuck yous” I can throw in your direction.

That anyone could think his death is deserved uncovers sad truths about the people that say them, not Chris Kyle. He had the courage, fortitude and skill to do his job for a decade and then get out and give back to fellow warriors and help them heal. His death is a tragedy and depite what the media and other idiots will say, PTSD was not the reason this guy killed them. He was just an asshole. As for the people celebrating Kyle’s death or capitalizing on it for their agenda, that is more of a mental illness than any kind of PTSD and they are the tryp of people society should truely be concerned about.

I have never thought about killing someone who was trying to help me through a rough time period, the guy who did the shooting is a worthless turd and he is going to use his illness as a crutch to excuse just what he did, backshooting a fellow vet who was trying to help his sorry ass.

See, my last duty station was the Naval Regional Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA, near the Navy Yard. I did medical photography of things like men coming in from Vietnam with shrapnel wounds and arms and legs blown off by booby traps, getting prepped for surgery to repair those wounds so that they could at least have some semblance of a normal life. One of them told me he was just glad to be alive. He had a hole in his face where his nose used to be, so the surgeon was planning to give him a new nose.

I do have many friends whom I served with who suffer from PTSD to one degree or another and they are all non violent individuals. It is most tragic not only that these 2 gentlemen were killed, leaving families behind, but that the alleged shooter is a young veteran suffering from PTSD. I can’t help but think that they were taking an awful risk in bringing Routh to a shooting range under the circumstances.

Y’know, I went looking for the specific term ‘combat’, which is non-extant as a standalone term in the DoD Dictionary. The noun ‘combat’ is accompanied by secondary nouns that specifically address particulars of combat airspace, combat zone, combat support elements, etc., etc., et cetera.
However, there is no DoD-specific definition for the word ‘combat’ alone.
Anyone taking bets on how long it takes Goofus Amongus to switch subjects again?

Curiously enough, neither FM 1-02 (Operational Terms and Graphics) nor JP 1-02 (Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms) seem to contain a definition of the term “combat”. As far as I know, those two pubs would be where the term would be officially defined for the Army and DoD, respectively.

Quite a number of the terms in both publications use the word “combat” either as part of the term being defined or as part of a definition. But if the term “combat” is defined in either publication I certainly can’t find the definition.

What disturbs me the most about Chris was his view on killing. He somehow believed that killing 150 people was good because he was on the “correct” side of the fight. In reality the only difference between him and the insurgents he killed is the place he was born and the magical being in the sky he worships.
I wont say that I am happy he was shot because death is never a good thing. On the other hand, I certainly wont lose any sleep over his death, just as he apparently didn’t over the so called evil people he killed.

DoD Researcher: right you are. But it’s Jonn’s call whether or not to ban her (or to put her on moderation, where her comments get reviewed individually before they’re posted). Jonn generally doesn’t do that simply because someone is a dipshit. They have to cross a couple of lines first.
The few examples I’ve seen where Jonn banned or put someone on moderation involved people making comments containing blatantly racist or grossly misogynistic statements. And I’m not sure he’s ever banned someone outright – though I could be wrong about that.
ObamaGirl is an insulting, infantile, petulant, hypocritical, and ignorant ditz. But so far as I can tell she hasn’t crossed those particular “red lines”.

Sporkmaster: that’s part of the criteria for the CAB vice an official Army definition of the term “combat”. It’s word-for-word identical to para 8-8.c.(3) in AR 600-8-22.
The term “combat” is used often, but neither the Army nor DoD seems to have formally defined what is actually meant by “combat”. I guess like pornography, you’re supposed to “know it when you see it” based on “contemporary community standards”.
And I agree it leaves much up to the discretion of individual commanders, IMO way too much. Because of that discretion, I’ve seen some real head-scratchers – like folks getting both a noncombat decoration and a CAB for the same tour in Iraq. Maybe someone will be able to explain that one to me someday.

Even the CIB criteria has room for interpretation. Does shooting at the enemy if they don’t shoot back count? How about getting shot at by a sniper you can’t locate and thus can’t shoot back at? How about IDF? What if the forces never close with each other, but exchange fire at some distance and then break contact? Which of those do/don’t qualify?
The only place I’ve ever seen the term “combat” formally defined is in a dictionary. And dictionary definitions for the term are usually rather broad, something along the lines of “an engagement fought between opposing military forces” or something similar.
Unfortunately, the term “engagement” is rather broad. JP 1-02 defines “engagement” as a “tactical conflict, usually between opposing lower echelons maneuver forces.” This would seem to include anything from a single individual being shot at by a single enemy sniper to a single IDF round striking a base/camp/patrol to a pitched battle between battalion-sized or larger units. Under that definition, pretty much any exchange of fire (unilateral or bilateral) would qualify as “combat”.
I’m OK with that if that’s what the Army wants – personally, I think if you’re getting shot at or shooting at someone while you’re in a combat zone, you’re serving in combat. I could accept a “tighter” definition too if the Army wants to promulgate one and apply it across the board. But I think we can and should do a better job of defining the “rules” than that. Otherwise, what’s “combat” to one CO might not be to another.
To do that, we need to define explicitly what we mean by “combat”. We don’t seem to have ever explicitly done so.

I never even met the guy yet I knew exactly what kind of person he was. Regardless of what I thought I wanted to do hes the one who pushed me over the edge on being a SEAL. After everyone and everything I’ve read about he was always the one I fell back onto and looked up to. Now that has changed. Now I look up to him more than ever before and I can honestly say that his mission will never end. He was the most selfless person ive ever known of.I didnt express It much but meeting him was one of the main things I wanted to do in my life. But I didnt realize that it didnt have to be face to face until now. If I become half the man that he is and I can wake up everyday and pin the same trident on my chest and serve with the same honor and valor he did every minute of his life. Then I have gone beyond meeting him. Especially knowing that he helped me get there. Future Seal- Skylar Reese, Winfield,Alabama!!

The refusal to answer questions, the listless attempts at rebuttal, and the constant change of subject on OG’s part are clear indicators of lack of skill in debate and/or argument.
I see no harm in a friendly argument.
But these vicious, personal attacks by OG are neither friendly nor good arguments. Chris did more good things on any single given day than they will do in their entire lives. When men like Chris die, our entire nation mourns, and he will never ever be forgotten. When Joe dies there will be a couple of paragraphs in the hometown obituary and within hours nobody will remember or care who he was or the fact that he is gone.

I am going to do something that I find myself doing more and more often. I am going to break Kafabe and address Obama Girl as Jason DS as some people may know me here in real life. MCPO, I will forever carry a reminder of that on my body. I have a Soldier’s Cross and John 15:13, tattooed pretty fraking big on either side of my ribs. I was a Delayed Entry Soldier in the Reserve in 2002, still on high school, I packed up my unit as they left for Kuwait. I lost a steady stream of friends starting July 1st of 2003 with the Company 1SG, a great man and mentor, and it hasn’t gotten easier in the last decade. I’ve grown up with this war, I feel like an old man at 28. Shit happens, but this? Understandable Gumbo and not to make light of, or in any way say that those other people’s loss/sacrafice isn’t as great, however there are 2 primary drivers of this story: 1. Many people who author and/or read this blog knew Chief Kyle and not just from TV and his book, but have served and/or met/spoken with him (also the biggest factors in my mind,) and 2. Chief’s work after his retirement to help fellow Vets is a shining example and one to emulate of us taking care of our own, especailly with the bang-up job the Government has done trying to do so.
