Chris Kyle; RIP

| February 3, 2013 | 419 Comments

Since I knew about it before most people, you’d think I’d have dealt with it by now. But I haven’t. I’ve been staring at an empty screen for more than two hours wondering what I could write. I never met Chris Kyle, but after reading his book, you get a sense that you have met him.

But, last night, I got a call from someone who wanted us to help the police find Kyle’s killer. I was stunned when he gave me the news. I have no idea who it was that called, but he had access to police message traffic, so, you know, I can guess. So I called the sheriff’s department and they confirmed for me that the incident had indeed happened, but they wouldn’t confirm that Kyle was involved.

But, anyway, I guess they caught Eddie Routh, Kyle’s killer. According to some of our Marines with access to the Marines On Line database, Routh is a corporal and a unit armorer and currently in the Individual Ready Reserve – that status you do before you get out of the service.

According to Fox News, Routh was apprehended near Lancaster, TX at about 9:30 local time last night after shooting Kyle and his neighbor in the back and fleeing the scene in a pickup belonging to one of his victims, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Now, if you don’t want to get pissed off, you should stop reading here. I cruised over the Huffington Post and read some of the comments those tiny-brained morons were leaving and, of course, it’s all about gun control and veterans. And of course, they tell us that Kyle’s death was karma for killing more than 150 insurgents. Twitchy logged some of the “tweets” from the Leftist ghouls yesterday celebrating the death and standing on his body for their political agenda.

Here’s an example;

It is most tragic not only that these 2 gentlemen were killed, leaving families behind, but that the alleged shooter is a young veteran suffering from PTSD. I can’t help but think that they were taking an awful risk in bringing Routh to a shooting range under the circumstances.

Meantime, everybody take a deep breath everyone as some of the comments posted on here tell me there are others with a short fuse that they are finding it hard to control

  2. ObamaGirl says:

I didn’t wish terminal cancer on somebody because he was trying to make a point.

  3. 68W58 says:

    Neither did Hondo-read it again.

Oh-and Joe was just trolling, same as you.

  4. ObamaGirl says:

    Joe’s last comment was

I am sorry for your loss. I’ll leave you in peace.

That is some hardcore trolling.. Read it again.

  5. NHSparky says:

Okay, OG–I won’t wish terminal cancer on you or Joe, either.

Although a raging case of syphilis on you both isn’t out of the question, and I’m sure you’ve got first-hand experience with most of the major symptoms already.

  6. 68W58 says:

I read his first comment-he was trolling. You come on a blog/message board and say something provocative. knowing that those who usually post there won’t welcome your input, you’re trolling.

I get that maybe you don’t grok that since you have essentially the same shtick, but it is what it is.

  7. Futue Te Ipsum says:

Oh, so it’s OK for OG to give everyone here a tongue-lashing and start off by calling people morons, but it isn’t okay when OG gets it right back in its face?

The rule is this: if you can’t take it, then you don’t get to dish it out.

    Got that?

You started it. You got it handed back to you in spades, die dumme Kuh. Sie sind eine Zimtzicke, Schlamp, und linke Titte, Schweinehund. Ficken sie.

  8. NHSparky says:

And while you’re at it, make sure you read his other comments in this thread, folks…and don’t just stop there. Pick pretty much any topic Joe or OG decide to swoop and poop on, and if you come away not feeling like you need to take a Crying Game type shower, you are not human.

  9. SteveS says:

    Joe’s FIRST post:

“When a guy who is about as much of an expert on guns as it is possible to be, and he can’t even protect himself from gun violence, well so much for you “armed society is a peaceful society”.”

Can you even remark on someone coming in here with such shit? On which potential planet is that pathetic tripe welcome? What the fuck, this is the Huffington Post?
You want to post shit like that, go over there. Here, this thread is to honor a warrior, not make some pissant political statement.
I ask you again to leave.

  10. PALADIN says:

@159 Neither OG or Joey are fit to lick the boots of Chief Kyle.

I second your motion to these retreads … LEAVE !

  11. ObamaGirl says:

@159 Why is Mr. Kyle the only warrior honored on this site? Why isn’t every service member honored on here when they are killed or wounded? Was it because it might have made your war in Iraq look less justifed? I thought this blog was supposed to be for veterans, instead of corrupt republican politicians.

  12. 68W58 says:

    Hilarious!

  13. Futue Te Ipsum says:

    Quit changing the subject NOW!!!!

You prove, over and over again, that you are incapable of anything other than vilification and denigration. You lose argument after argument, try to throw it onto another line, and you still lose.

Apologize for your egregious behavior and your false superiority, and do it now.

And then leave, and don’t come back.

  14. PALADIN says:

    @161 ahahhahahaahahhaaaaa ! i knew it !

You are truly a shameful piece of S@&t.

  15. Redacted1775 says:

161: That’s an easy one, he isn’t. Dummy.

  16. SteveS says:

I’ve been called many things in my life, including: Sergeant, Mr S, Asshole… but I’ve never been called a corrupt Republican politician. Clearly you have serious mental issues that preclude you from proper cognition and comprehension of the written word. I bet if you’d ever come here and paid any attention, you’d see that Jonn and his merry band of cutthroats are the most “Hoo-ah” supporters of veterans both living and dead that you could ever find. Instead you come here like a rabid chimpanzee flinging dung and smearing itself with more dung.
In honor of Chief Kyle, I will hereby refrain from commenting any further in this thread.
    :slow hand salute: RIP Chief

  17. Hondo says:

ObamaGirl: for the second time, ditz: I didn’t wish Joe terminal cancer either. Go re-read what I wrote in comments 9 and 20 – if you can read and understand them, that is. Or have someone read and explain them to you if comprehending clear written English is beyond your capability.

So you now want to know about my background? Oh, that’s rich. You’ve lied about me above by deliberately (or through appalling ignorance) misrepresenting what I said, and falsely called me a liar in comments to another article on this board. I’ve brought that to your attention multiple places and times. Yet you’ve never seen fit to apologize – and have repeated the lies again in a subsequent comment above. Now you’re asking me to tell you about my background? And you’re also trying to play the “you’re not a grunt” card – when you obviously aren’t one yourself?

Geez, ObamaGirl – you are really one hypocritical piece of work.

I get pissed off at people when they lie to or about me, girlie. And when I’m pissed off at someone, I usually don’t feel inclined to satisfy their idle curiosity if I don’t have to.

In this case, I don’t have to.

Don’t like that? Tough. You don’t have to like it. But you’ll have to deal with that for now.

Change your attitude, apologize, and start acting like an adult. Then you might get an answer. Keep acting like a spoiled six-year-old brat who isn’t getting her way and you won’t.

  18. NHSparky says:

And I see that OG, like many of the STDs she carries, just keep popping up. They’ll never really go away, just flare up every now and again.

  19. Futue Te Ipsum says:

In case anyone wondered about it, eine linke Titte means “a leftist tit”. ;)

  20. PALADIN says:

    @ 166 Roger That !

R.I.P Chris , and Know we will never forget your courage and sacrifice to keep our entity and self respect.

    God Bless You.

  21. PavePusher says:

#115: That may be a fraud.

From their Facebook page, via their corporate page:

“ALERT: Alyson Seligman’s photo was ripped off her personal blog and used on a Twitter profile by someone spewing awful anti-American remarks as it relates to the tragedy of Chris Kyle this weekend. Please, please know that is not her; we have alerted authorities and the page has now been suspended. We are working to remedy the situation however, if you see Alyson’s photo we appreciate if you can advise us. Thank you in advance.”

  22. cannoncocker says:

Wow, up to 166 posts up to this point. I’m just saddened. I’m not even angry anymore. Ok, yeah, I’m angry. But more saddened at this point.

ObamaGirl, you DO realize that Joe started it right? You DO realize that him trolling and shitting all over the memory of a great Warrior is the reason all this started right? You DO UNDERSTAND THAT RIGHT??? And yet he is the one you are defending, at the same time trying to tell us all how great YOU are because you’re also a “veteran”? (in quotations because describing you as a “veteran” requires the loosest meaning of the term.)

Get your 11B/SF/Space Shuttle Door Gunner husband in here so we can get his take on his wife’s stupidity. Please. Does he even know what you’re up to tonight? Has he even asked why you’re on the computer instead of making him a sandwich?

  23. WkAvngr211 says:

My condolences to the families of Chief Kyle, and his friend. OG thank you for your service, whatever it was, but please do the world a favor and don’t breed. To the other trolls, “F” the hell off you worthless boils on a gnat’s ass.

  24. PavePusher says:

Let’s ignore the trolls folks. They came pushing buttons for reactions, and you gave it to them, in spades. Let them talk to the wind.

  25. ObamaGirl says:

@167 You’re the one who owes an apology for wishing illness on someone you have never met.. And quit the charade you have no military backround. You’re another chickenhawk trying to justify himself, just another keyboard commando.

  26. Ex-PH2 says:

    Now cracks a noble heart.
    Good night, sweet prince
    And flights of angels
    Sing thee to thy rest.

  27. Redacted1775 says:

Not only is OG incapable of thinking on her own, apparently she’s also illiterate.

  28. Hondo says:

ObamaGirl: yeah, right. You obviously cannot read clear written English and/or don’t care about the truth. So go ahead and delude yourself if you like. You’ll still be a ditz, but maybe you’ll be a happy ditz.

Oh, who am I kidding. You’ll be an ill-tempered, disagreeable ditz wherever you go. So just go elsewhere.

I’ll laugh about your claims that I “never served” when my reserve retired pay starts in a few years – approx 15 months early due to my performing active duty in support of designated contingency operations under 10 USC 12301(D) after 28 Jan 2008.

Shoot, you’ll probably still be claiming you’re a “PHd student” then.

  29. Sporkmaster says:

And you still owe me a definition. Since you missed it I will re-post.

I am kinda curious what is as you put it, “what the military defines as combat” is? Since the Military now suddenly gave a clear set defined rules as when is considered real combat then would you care to cite that definition for me please?

For education since you know exactly is defined as what is and is not considered combat now.

  30. Joe Williams says:

The question was asked and never answered ! What unit did you serve in? What was the time period of tour? Joe

  31. Nurse Murch says:

OG, you want some Midol or something? Looks like your PMS is gettin’ out of control there, sandcrab.

  32. DoD Researcher says:

Y’know, I went looking for the specific term ‘combat’, which is non-extant as a standalone term in the DoD Dictionary. The noun ‘combat’ is accompanied by secondary nouns that specifically address particulars of combat airspace, combat zone, combat support elements, etc., etc., et cetera.

However, there is no DoD-specific definition for the word ‘combat’ alone.

Anyone taking bets on how long it takes Goofus Amongus to switch subjects again?

  33. Hondo says:

Sporkmaster: she won’t be able to. Curiously enough, neither FM 1-02 (Operational Terms and Graphics) nor JP 1-02 (Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms) seem to contain a definition of the term “combat”. As far as I know, those two pubs would be where the term would be officially defined for the Army and DoD, respectively.

    http://armypubs.army.mil/doctrine/DR_pubs/dr_a/pdf/fm1_02.pdf
    http://ra.defense.gov/documents/rtm/jp1_02.pdf

Quite a number of the terms in both publications use the word “combat” either as part of the term being defined or as part of a definition. But if the term “combat” is defined in either publication I certainly can’t find the definition.

Dunno why that’s the case, but it is. Had to research it once and was quite surprised by the result.

  34. DoD Researcher says:

So are you saying, Hondo, that OG lied again?!?!?

OG enjoys provoking people, which is why questions are never answered, snide and snarky remarks and insults are thrown out like confetti, the subject is repeatedly changed and/or bypassed, and yet the insulter doesn’t like being insulted. It’s all very self-serving, manipulative and infantile.

I think it’s time to call it quits. And block the trolls while you’re at it.

  35. Nathan says:

What disturbs me the most about Chris was his view on killing. He somehow believed that killing 150 people was good because he was on the “correct” side of the fight. In reality the only difference between him and the insurgents he killed is the place he was born and the magical being in the sky he worships.

I wont say that I am happy he was shot because death is never a good thing. On the other hand, I certainly wont lose any sleep over his death, just as he apparently didn’t over the so called evil people he killed.

  36. Hondo says:

DoD Researcher: right you are. But it’s Jonn’s call whether or not to ban her (or to put her on moderation, where her comments get reviewed individually before they’re posted). Jonn generally doesn’t do that simply because someone is a dipshit. They have to cross a couple of lines first.

The few examples I’ve seen where Jonn banned or put someone on moderation involved people making comments containing blatantly racist or grossly misogynistic statements. And I’m not sure he’s ever banned someone outright – though I could be wrong about that.

ObamaGirl is an insulting, infantile, petulant, hypocritical, and ignorant ditz. But so far as I can tell she hasn’t crossed those particular “red lines”.

    Yet.

  37. Redacted1775 says:

Now that’s a piece of shit opinion born of ingorance and too sheltered a life. Educate yourself son.

  38. Sporkmaster says:

Considering that those 150 people and those like them have done second and first hand I would say that I will sleep better knowing that they are 6 feet under.

  39. Jim says:

    Rest in peace, shipmate.

  40. Sporkmaster says:

    Hando

It seems that when approving certain combat awards it leaves a lot up to the person approving it.

Soldier must be personally present and actively engaging or being engaged by the enemy, and performing satisfactorily in accordance with the prescribed rules of engagement.

  41. Hondo says:

Sporkmaster: that’s part of the criteria for the CAB vice an official Army definition of the term “combat”. It’s word-for-word identical to para 8-8.c.(3) in AR 600-8-22.

The term “combat” is used often, but neither the Army nor DoD seems to have formally defined what is actually meant by “combat”. I guess like pornography, you’re supposed to “know it when you see it” based on “contemporary community standards”.

And I agree it leaves much up to the discretion of individual commanders, IMO way too much. Because of that discretion, I’ve seen some real head-scratchers – like folks getting both a noncombat decoration and a CAB for the same tour in Iraq. Maybe someone will be able to explain that one to me someday.

  42. Sporkmaster says:

But look at the wording for the CIB with is more detailed and specific.

A Soldier must be personally present and under fire while serving in an assigned infantry or Special Forces primary duty, in a unit engaged in active ground combat, to close with and destroy the enemy with direct fire.

  43. Hondo says:

Sporkmaster: agreed, the CIB criteria is more specific. But neither defines precisely what the term “combat” actually means.

Even the CIB criteria has room for interpretation. Does shooting at the enemy if they don’t shoot back count? How about getting shot at by a sniper you can’t locate and thus can’t shoot back at? How about IDF? What if the forces never close with each other, but exchange fire at some distance and then break contact? Which of those do/don’t qualify?

The only place I’ve ever seen the term “combat” formally defined is in a dictionary. And dictionary definitions for the term are usually rather broad, something along the lines of “an engagement fought between opposing military forces” or something similar.

Unfortunately, the term “engagement” is rather broad. JP 1-02 defines “engagement” as a “tactical conflict, usually between opposing lower echelons maneuver forces.” This would seem to include anything from a single individual being shot at by a single enemy sniper to a single IDF round striking a base/camp/patrol to a pitched battle between battalion-sized or larger units. Under that definition, pretty much any exchange of fire (unilateral or bilateral) would qualify as “combat”.

I’m OK with that if that’s what the Army wants – personally, I think if you’re getting shot at or shooting at someone while you’re in a combat zone, you’re serving in combat. I could accept a “tighter” definition too if the Army wants to promulgate one and apply it across the board. But I think we can and should do a better job of defining the “rules” than that. Otherwise, what’s “combat” to one CO might not be to another.

To do that, we need to define explicitly what we mean by “combat”. We don’t seem to have ever explicitly done so.

  44. Nathan says:

Haha, what do bar girls have to do with this conversation? Did someone say I am sheltered? ZZzz what a waste of time.

  45. Smitty says:

“If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude over the animated contest for freedom, depart from us at once. we seek neither your arms nor your council, and may prosperity forget that we ever called you our countrymen”

    Samuel Adams

i am still breathing today because of Chris Kyle’s actions in faluja and sadre city in ’04. Chris then did another service to my family in providing over watch for my father in ramadi in ’07 and ’08. i count him as a friend and will never forget him nor his service.

  46. Nathan says:

Yet, the reality is there was no reason for either of you to be in those places to begin with.

We protect our freedom by bombing people thousands of miles away. Sounds like someone is watching too much Fox News.

  47. Smitty says:

we were there for each other and the other men that wore our uniform. we went because the man next to us went and we wanted him to come home alive. what we did there protected you from men who want you just as dead as they want me, despite your liberal sympathies. i would rather fight my enemies on their home land then ours, but forget not that terrorists brought the fight to us, on our soil. very few people taking up arms against the US in iraq were iraqi, they came from the world over to fight us because it was easier to become an armed militant in iraq than to do the same in the states. all of this is irrelivent, what is done is done and many years behind us. we went to Iraq, we fought for your freedom and to protect you, we came home and all we did was forsaken and pronounced in vein.

it matters not why we were there, we were. i draw breath today because of a great man and a great soldier watching my back. i am on this web site, because he was stolen from this world by a man he tried to help. you are here for God only knows why

  48. DefendUSA says:

    Nathan,
Here it is. Shut. the. fuck. up. It’s the asshole cowards like you who have no fucking idea about guys like Chris Kyle. And you never will until your own sorry ass is on the line and you’ve got nothing but phrases like, “Hold on, Can we talk?” to get you out of it. And sadly, it won’t help. Neither will watching MSNBC and all the fuckheads who would doctor videos and turn them into propaganda called news.
    Shut. the fuck. up.
