So, Do Strict Gun Control Laws Really Lower Crime?

| February 6, 2013

Just ask the folks in Massachusetts.

In 1998, Massachusetts overhauled their gun laws.  Gun purchase and ownership was restricted significantly by the changes.

Since 1998, murders using firearms have risen 87.7 percent; aggravated assaults, 26.7 percent; and robberies using firearms, 20.7 percent.  In contrast, during that same time frame the population of Massachusettes rose only approximately 7.0 percent – from 6.175 million in 1998 to 6.607 million in 2011.

Yep – stricter gun control laws work really well to reduce crime, don’t they?

  1. A Proud Infidel says:

Year after year the facts and statistics constantly prove that Gun Control Laws and the politicians that pass them do nothing more than aid, abet, and embolden violent criminals. All those laws do is guarantee said criminals that law-abiding people will be conveniently unarmed VICTIMS!

  2. Claymore says:

Ooh! Pick me! I know what they will say! “It’s because every state around Mass didn’t adopt the same laws, so now all of those douchey gun people are flooding peaceful, law-abiding Mass with icky guns.” And remember kids, semi-autos can shoot down airplanes and blow up trains.

  3. Herbert J. Messkit says:

But we have to have a “National Conversation” on gun control. Here’s my contribution.

I am a free law abiding citizen
I have a right to self defense and the MEANS with which to perform that.
I will decide what weapons I need to defend myself and my family. Not the government

    End of Conversation

  4. rb325th says:

Not a single person was murdered in Massachusetts last year using a “rifle” of any vareity…. and most of those murders were related to gang/drug violence. You know, folks who obey all the laws we have on the books right now as it is.

  5. Hondo says:

Proud Infidel: correct, amigo. But it never hurts to have another verifiable data point when the libidiots start in with their anti-gun mantra.

Claymore: correct, and here’s the response: tough. One state has no control over another state’s laws, be that state next door or across the country. And as long as those laws are Constitutional, neither does the Federal government.

  6. Twist says:

Herbert, Unfortunatly “National Conversation” means “shut up and listen to us preach to you about gun control”.

  7. Joe Williams says:

I thank the WON, my Firearms errr investment resource has more than doubled. Thank You Libtards joe

  8. B Woodman says:

Once-former-Great-Britian, Australia, Illinois, Kalifornication, and Washington DC can all show the same rise in general crime stats, while the guns being targeted and banned did not play any signifigant role in the crimes before or after the laws and regulations.
How’s that feel-good feel to ya now?

  9. Veritas Omnia Vincit says:

You jump through hoops just to have a shotgun in Massachusetts….I use these stats to confound the liberal idiots in my little town regularly…I’m not popular at parties here in the People’s Republic…

I live here in Mass, the population relative to the rest of the nation rose only 3.3% in the decade between censuses resulting in a loss of a congressional seat and a continued decline into obscurity. The city of Springfield where I lived when I first moved here in the mid 80s was a nice mid sized community where I played basketball at Forest Park regularly. I moved to a nice quiet suburb to the west in the early 90s and Springfield has become a sh1thole since due to a number of reasons, crime being one of them along with excessive property taxation to accommodate an out of control city government.

I suspect the next census could well indicate a loss or no growth in population as the leftists in charge continue to drive business and citizens south and west. My wife and I are considering south and west as a viable alternative as well. It’s not just the gun laws, but all the laws that are constantly being enacted to nickel and dime the law abiding to financial death.

  10. Flagwaver says:

Gun laws only affect those who actually follow the law. That is, they only disarm the law-abiding population. Mexico has one of the strictest gun control laws in the world, yet the cartels illegally import weapons (most recently from the U.S.) to use against the unarmed population.

  11. Ex-PH2 says:

Chicago – tax on bullets purchased, extremely strict gun control laws, regular run seizures*, rising crime rates.

*Latest gun seizure = 700 guns of all types

Yes, gun control is alive and well. It just doesn’t work very well.

  12. A_Proud_Infidel says:

Flag waver, you mean the AK’s given the cartels via B. Hussein 0bama & Co.’s Operation Fast & Furious? They sure seem to want the criminals armed and us vulnerable!

  13. NHSparky says:

Funny how NH has the 4th highest ownership of automatic (no shit automatics) weapons yet some of the lowest crime rates.

Even in my “high crime” town, there hasn’t been a murder in 10 years. A few meth/oxy addicts robbing drugstores, sure–but then again, those are soft targets as well.

  14. Joe Williams says:

John Lott’s “More Guns Less Crime”.

  15. SFC Holland says:

This is part of a bigger plan, and to make America vulnerable you must disarm the citizens.

The text of S.150 has finally been posted:

    Have fun, kiddies!

  17. Ex-PH2 says:

OWB, the document is not coming up. It should be a pdf or a doc or txt document. The screen is blank.

  18. OWB says:

    Let’s try it this way:

If that doesn’t work, try just going to and enter S.150 in the inquiry box there in the middle toward the top of the page. (Be sure to tick the bill number circle.)

  19. OWB says:

Please disregard the second attempt at my posting a link. Arrrrrgh!

  20. OWB says:

    Maybe this will work?
Then click on the “Text of Bill” box.
