Ron White; phony SEAL…and well everything

Ron White phony SEAL

Ray sends us this USAToday’s video of Missouri’s local hero Ron White who claims that he was a photographer’s mate in 1962 when he was drafted by the SEALs to take pictures of Castro’s missile sites in Cuba.

[Editor’s note: Apparently, USAToday pulled the video, so here’s Don Shipley’s video instead]

Yeah, I know, you all believe that story, doncha? Well, it’s on USAToday, so it must be true, huh? Well, Don Shipley says it’s not, and carefully coiffed hair beats a pony-tail every time at TAH. Don says that he knows the name of the SEALs who went on that mission, and White wasn’t one of them. Don also says that his website is total bullshit, too. I don’t know anything about martial arts, so I depend on the kindness of strangers, and Don says that there are no records of him in the United States Martial Arts Association or any of his zany claims.

And, oh, yeah, Don says that this is not a real SEAL ID card, in case you didn’t figure that out already;

Ron White ID card

Shipley also says that White got out of the Navy as an E-3, so he didn’t qualify to be a photographer’s mate. And you have to ask yourself, why would SEALs risk compromising a mission by taking a 17-year-old fresh out of technical school on mission for which he had no training or experience? Maybe that’s the question that USAToday or KSDK in Fenton, MO should have asked Mr White.

Well, Don called him and asked White some questions, of course, White got angry, but we’ll have a video soon to post.

ADDED: White now says that he never claimed to be a Navy SEAL, you know, depite the SEAL cap that he wore during the interview and the SEAL ID card.

He says he was a victim of the Edit.

    My opinion,
He is a old man who has nothing but a bed of half truths. We all know that there is no way a e-2 who may have worked in a photo lab someplace would ever be tossed into Cuba alone to take a picture of a missile site.

I think he got caught in his tales and is trying to back pedal. I will give him credit for calling me back. I was not confrontational.

I think we will see some sort of Apology from him in the near future.

  2. Hack.Stone says:

So, he rappelled down the side of a cliff, snapped the photographs, somehow was able to get back up the cliff, was immediately whisked away to the White House, where he hand the rolls of film directly to President Kennedy? Did he have time to swing by the Foto-Mat kiosk at the local Giant Supermarket to get the photos developed first? Maybe he took the photographs with a Polaroid.

  3. Ex-PH2 says:

Enigma4you, I doubt seriously this idiot ever even stepped inside a photo lab and wouldn’t know a film reel and can from the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch. Period.

Now, why do I say this? Because in them there good ol’ days, when the Navy was sorting out the stupid and sending them off for various and sundry duty stations, and sending the eligible off to various and sundry schools, those who graduated RTC as designated strikers had a little badge sewn over their rating badges indicating what rate (MOS) they were striking for and indicating the specific school, if applicable. All others were undesignated swabbies who went for on the job training.

Dark blue E-2 stripes on whites or red on dark blues meant deck rates, as in Yeoman (YN), Personnelman (PN), Boatswain’s Mate (BM), Quartermaster (QM), Storekeeper (SK). Baby blue E-2 stripes meant the SeaBees – Construction Battalion/CB. Green E-2 stripes meant the aviation rates, e.g., aerographer’s mate (AG), aviation ordinanceman (AO), aviation storekeeper (AK).

Stop giving this jackass credit for stuff he didn’t do. He left the Navy as an E-3, which means he either fucked up but good or else he did nothing but chip paint off bulkheads, clean heads and swab and buff floors.

And what I find truly annoying is that he says Roy Boehm, who passed away in September 2008, was a friend of his. I doubt that seriously. In fact, I doubt that LCDR Boehm even knew who the hell this f#@#$kstick is.

  4. Combat Historian says:

This guy might have served on a TDY at Guantanamo Bay, and in his old addled mind that meant that he had “infiltrated” into Cuba. That’s the most charitable explanation I can come up with for this fool’s fantasy tale. Everything else he told was a lie, so I probably should not even be this charitable…

    My Letter to Him

    Mr. White,

After Reviewing the information you supplied verbally, on your website and in the interview from channel 5 I have come to the following conclusions.

You did in fact represent yourself to be a member of the SEAL community. This was either by act of omission or by failing to correct an assumption. I have spoken with Channel 5. They going on information you supplied did in fact believe you to be a SEAL. I find it particularly hard to believe that you would buy and take the time to type your Name on a fake SEAL ID. Then display the same item in your home among your other military mementos. After the news piece aired you could have objected to it and even clarified that you were not a SEAL.

The only records of the events you describe are ones you supplied. There are no secret SEALS. When I asked you several times about your clandestine involvement in Cuba you stated that it was something you were not allowed to talk about. Yet in several places and to many people you have told the story of being in Cuba. So if your story is true you have breached Operational Security, admitted to spying, and compromised your mission, no matter how long ago it was.

I find it very impossible to believe that a 17 year, fresh out of boot camp would receive orders from the POTUS concerning a highly secretive mission. While you may have in fact met JFK I doubt it was in connection with secret photos you took..

People who fake Military service follow a pattern. You have without question followed that pattern.
They pick a well know and published event and inject themselves into it in a critical Role, In this Case the very world was at stake, you infiltrated Cuba alone, hung from a cliff and took the pictures that gave the US what it needed. You were flown, (no explanation was given for getting out of Cuba or where you were flown from) to DC and Rushed to the President. When we spoke I said the White House and you confirmed. When and where were the Photos Developed?
Why take hours to fly you when Photos Could have been wired?

Next people who fake always change the Story, you have. Several times over the past couple of years. I have read your account in at least 3 places and it is never the same.

Last when confronted with the lie or the improbability of events they always claim Top Secret or need to know. This is after talking in detail about the mission.

My recommendation is to admit you fabricated the story. I have request out to the JFK library to search the Presidential visitors log. Everyone who see President is Logged is and out, with no exceptions.

You may go to the website http://thisainthell.us/blog/ search your name. A full confession and apology will go a long way.

Now I have no sympathy for those that fake Heroism. I have seen the damage caused by fakes. What may have been just a story or exaggeration to you cast doubt on all who ever wore the uniform.

This will be my last Direct contact with you unless you choose to respond. I can promise that I will make sure that you stay in this spotlight until you repent or bring forth Real third party proof to your claims.

    Respectfully,

    Wesley Wilson

I agree, Don’t mistake a measured approach as sympathy.
One of the things I was trying to find out was if in 1962 Photographers mate was a Deck Rating or Air rating

    PHOTOGRAPHER’S MATE
    Photographer’s rating (P) redesignated
Photographer’s Mate (PhoM) by CL 113–42 of 8 Aug
    1942 and again removed from the Aviation Branch;
rating split into Photographer’s Mate and Aviation
Photographer’s Mate (both PhoM) effective 2 Apr
    1948 by CL 40–47 of 21 Feb 1947; abbreviation
changed to (AF) by CL 106–48 of 9 Jun 1948; ratings
combined to become Photographer’s Mate (PH) of
the Aviation Group by CL 116–50 of 31 Jul 1950.

    This is from this site

    http://www.history.navy.mil/avh-1910/APP14.PDF

Seaman (Deck) stripes were Blue if on Whites or White is on Blues
    Fireman (Engineering)Red Stripes
    Airman (Aviation) Green Stripes
    Construction Light Blue

His Reply Just as I received with the exception of changing his comments to bold. I hope

    Mr. White,

Then display the same item in your home among your other military mementos. After the news piece aired you could have objected to it and even clarified that you were not a SEAL.

I don’t know how many times I have to say this or to how many people I have to say it to but I did NOT claim to be a SEAL. I do not claim to have been a SEAL. As I told you, YEARS ago when I first talked to Don Shipley I made that fact clear. I’m sorry if someone thought I was a SEAL from the interview, that was NOT my intent. You have my apology for not making it crystal Clear and my assurance that the same incident will not happen again. That’s all I can do.

The only records of the events you describe are ones you supplied. There are no secret SEALS. When I asked you several times about your clandestine involvement in Cuba you stated that it was something you were not allowed to talk about. I find it very impossible to believe that a 17 year, fresh out of boot camp would receive orders from the POTUS concerning a highly secretive mission.

Once again, you are misunderstanding the way it went down. I did not personally receive orders, someone else did, non military. I was TAD for a total of about 4 or 5 weeks. I spent that time learning things such as basic scuba, repelling and other things I had to learn to do what I had to do.

While you may have in fact met JFK I doubt it was in connection with secret photos you took..

People who fake Military service follow a pattern. You have without question followed that pattern.

On the sub. Black and White photos were easy.

Why take hours to fly you when Photos Could have been wired?

    Chain of evidence,

Next people who fake always change the Story, you have. Several times over the past couple of years. I have read your account in at least 3 places and it is never the same.

Last when confronted with the lie or the improbability of events they always claim Top Secret or need to know. This is after talking in detail about the mission.

    This is NOT details.

Thank you for the NON CONFRONTATIONAL threat. I have apologized for causing any wrong interpretation of this story and I understand how it happened. I have also agreed that I will not speak of anything CUBA or SEALs again. I have also left a message for Channel 5 to call me back. If that’s not good enough then I don’t know what else I can do. The story is not fabricated, the presentation was just wrong. It is my fault that I did not make the whole story clearer.
I’m done, what else can I do? Feel free to pass this email on to whom ever.

    Respectfully,

    Wesley Wilson

  8. Ex-PH2 says:

Chain of evidence? What chain of evidence? He was never there. The whole history of that October event is recorded. The men who were involved in it are recorded. He was not one of them. Is there no end to his deceit?

Baker’s camera on the U2 used a specialized large format split film that was processed in a large drum roll film processor specifically designed to accomodate 13×13 aerial film. None of those photographs were shot on small format handheld SLR cameras. I processed and printed stuff like that down in Pensacola.

This jackass won’t quite lying until he’s squashed but good. When does this shit stop?

White, you’re a lying, shitass, fucking gasbag.

  9. Army ATC says:

Enigma, was that last supposed to pass for a confession and apology? He didn’t recant a single thing he said, just attempted to whitewash it with excuses and denials. What a fucking turd White is.

  10. Enigma4you says:

I esp like the part where he infers that he was working with the CIA.You know orders from a non military type, and if you look and his site you will see him talk about the operation mongoose.

I think he took one to many blows to the head

  11. Just An Old Dog says:

I want to see the TV station do a retraction of the original Story letting everyone know they were duped.

  12. Hondo says:

If he was 17 when he joined up in 1961 or 1962, he’s at most 70.

Barring early-onset dementia, that’s a bit young IMO to be cutting anyone slack for “losing it”. And his comments above seem a bit too lucid to buy any “early onset” claims.

In other words: available evidence indicates he’s simply a LSoS who got caught, and he’s now backpedaling and smokescreening furiously.

  13. Combat Historian says:

“Once again, you are misunderstanding the way it went down. I did not personally receive orders, someone else did, non military. I was TAD for a total of about 4 or 5 weeks. Yeah, sure. He probably spent 4-5 weeks TDY at Gitmo cleaning the head and swabbing the deck, and all of a sudden that became a “secret mission to infiltrate Cuba”. You think we’re stoopid or somethin, ronny?

  14. Bobo says:

Pick a fresh out of boot camp E2 to send to SCUBA school, teach to rappel, and how to use a camera, plus E&E a And other skills. Kind of makes all of those Navy Frogmen kind of redundant, doesn’t it.

  15. Jonn Lilyea says:

Yeah, he ever claimed to be a SEAL. Just click on the picture at the top of the post and read his hat and all of the shit behind him on his “I Love Me” wall.

  16. smoke-check says:

This makes my head hurt. One thing is clear. This guy has been doing this for many years and has altered his approach each time his BS is called out. Like he is a learning sentient being or something …couldn’t tell by looking at him though. He speaks in half truths to hid blatant lies. Where is “The Hair’s” video on this guy? I want him crushed. And this news station doesn’t seem the least bit concerned with looking stupid. Guess a good story is better than a truthful story. Par for the course with the media today.

  17. smoke-check says:

Can’t it be verified whether or not there is even an effing cliff anywhere near that site?

  18. MCPO NYC USN Ret. says:

  19. Enigma4you says:

I spent allot of time on this guy the last couple of days,
    I spoke to him twice.

He is smart. I cant find anyplace that he actually claimed to be a SEAL. He has done it be inference and innuendo. He is careful to always leave himself an out of misunderstanding.

  20. GDContractor says:

“Once again, you are misunderstanding the way it went down. I did not personally receive orders, someone else did, non military. I was TAD for a total of about 4 or 5 weeks. I spent that time learning things such as basic scuba, repelling and other things I had to learn to do what I had to do.”

Why would the government give a snot nosed kid, fresh out of school, all that training for a top secret mission on which the fate of the world could hang, when there were fully qualified and experienced men ready to go? There’s no way he can explain that. It’s an obvious lie, and one on which his entire silly story hangs. And if that isn’t true, then one can assume, with utmost confidence, that the rest of his fairy tale is a lie also. Hanging midway down a cliff snapping pics. What utter bullshit. I don’t understand how anyone, especially an experienced reporter, could fall for that line of crap. I guess this is just more proof that journalistic standards are next to nil.

  23. smoke-check says:

@119 right it is well known that those pictures were taken from the air, but this asshat is still clinging to the story that he was dangling from a cliff. I was just wondering if there are any other pictures of the site that can refute his crap claim by demonstrating that there isn’t even a cliff around the area.

  24. OAE CPO USN Ret says:

At 2:35 in the video, to the left of the SEAL patch, there’s a card that looks like it says “Navy UDT/SEAL Museum”.

  25. Hack.Stone says:

If you get a local news station to run a story on your “military exploits”, then get called out on TAH as a lying sack of shit, you just might be a military poser.

Sorry. wrong comedian. If we ever come across a poser named George Carlin claiming to be a SEAL, we could run a bit called Seven Dirty Words You Can’t Say About Don Shipley’s Hair.

  26. Hondo says:

Well, well, well . . . what have we here?

    Look familiar, “SEAL” White?

I think it should – and you sure as hell didn’t take that photo. It’s documented to have been taken on a low-level photo recon mission led by CDR William Ecker, USN, on 23 October 1963. “Taken while hanging from a cliff by a rope” my azz.

Here’s one place that’s documented. See photo 21:

    http://www2.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/nsa/cuba_mis_cri/photos.htm

It took me less than 5 minutes to find it using Google. I’m guessing you did much the same, but probably found a higher resolution copy somewhere – and stole that higher-res copy to claim as your own.

Don’t even bother claiming “that was a cover story – I really took it”. You’re nothing but a lying bastard. No one with even two working brain cells will believe that crap.

    Just STFU and go away.

  27. 2/17 Air Cav says:

@120. The guy is full of shit, right up to his ponytail.

USA Today Video Over Voice: “The brand new Navy SEALS recruited White [and he] became part of a clandestine mission by SEAL Team 2. The objective? Sneak into Cuba and get photographic proof that Russia was hiding nuclear missiles there.” [White points to picture on wall and says that it was one taken from a cliff and that President Kennedy looked at the picture.] Immediately after that statement, the over voice says, “White rappelled that cliff and hung in midair until there was enough light to photograph the missiles inside a cave.” White says, “That part was scary and I’m thinking, ‘I don’t want to have to come back and do this twice.” Despite his fear, he says he “Got all the pictures and took off and, luckily, it worked out.” Okay, that was rather straightforward. He didn’t have to want to come back where and do what twice, wash cars in Hoboken? Or was that really what he was referring to and USA Today concocted the whole Cuba story?

And White’s WH visit was a real gem.

USA Today Video Over Voice: “White was immediately flown to Washington to hand deliver the photos to the White House.” White explains that he was nervous a guy came up and White took a pouch containing the pictures and handed the pouch to the guy. It was then that he saw a fellow who looked like JFK and another who looked like McNamara.

Did I say White is full of shit? He may be adept at doubletalk and the USA Today may have taken some liberties in describing White’s imagined adventure, but White’s statements are flat-out crap. Can anyone, for a second, believe that during the Cuban Missile crisis he doesn’t recall specific dates of anything even though he has had decades to piece it together? But dates suck because when one connects dates to specific events, claims can easily be confirmed or disproved. He isn’t slick and he isn’t smart. He’s a bullshitting manipulator.

  28. Green Thumb says:

    General, all-around dirtbag.

  29. Wade Allen Hawk says:

“United States Martial Arts Association”, I never even heard of that till today, but I can tell you this, whether someones name is registered there or not proves nothing. I searched my name, it wasn’t there either, and I searched my Instructors last name, which is a Hachi Dan, and guess what, it wasn’t there either. That sight means nothing, you can probably buy a Navy Seal ID there too for all I care. You got to pay to be registered there, and your name submitted by your Sensei.

I’m not saying that the guy in the story isn’t a fake, I’m just responding because this isn’t like asking Don Shipley if someone is a Navy SEAL, and getting a definite answer, you should ask who the fakes Sensei was supposed to be, then ask their Sensei if they taught the person “If Possible”, and get your information that way.

  30. Steadfast&Loyal says:

his martial arts credentials ring as false as he military.

Yeah the USMAA is not the litmus test of being a martial artist. heck I can register there as the Sifu of Chop Suey with a 15th dan gold belt.

Great and glorious organization. To be a member just pay, lol.

  31. Randall Somerby says:
