Arnon Cool, phony Special Forces (Updated)

| February 21, 2016

Arnon Cool

Our friends at Green Beret Posers Exposed sent us their work on this fellow Arnon Cool, known to his friends as “Sonny”. You can tell from the picture above, he thinks a lot of his career. He claims to be a Special Forces Soldier, a Ranger, he claims that he served in Korea and Vietnam as an infantry soldier – that he ran away from home and joined the Army at 14 years old, joined the 187th in Korea. That he earned two Purple Hearts, at least two Bronze Star Medals, every kind of wings that the Army offers.

Here’s his bio at the Summit County, Ohio Veterans Service Commission.

Cool bio

The National Personnel Records Center disagrees;

I know it’s a little hard to read, but he joined the Air Force in 1952 until 1962 as a missile electronics repair guy and then he enlisted in the Army in 1962 as a military policeman and he retired in 1973. He did go to Vietnam from January 1969 – January 1970 – a pretty tough year for the troops. He was assigned to an MP company in the 1st Infantry Division – so no Combat Infantry Badge, let alone two. No jump school, no Ranger, no Special Forces, no Pathfinder, no HALO. I think the FOIA says that he was a platoon sergeant (E-7) when he left the service, not a master sergeant. For you youngsters, Platoon Sergeant used to be a rank, it was the same as a Sergeant First Class, same pay, same rank on the uniform, but it was a different title. Like the difference between a Master Sergeant and a First Sergeant.

Here’s a clarification of the assignments;

OK. if you’re not pissed off enough yet, he wore that clown suit to Rudy Hernandez‘ funeral.

Arnon Cool2

The folks at GBPE talked with him on the phone about his claims.

ADDED: Pat sends us some articles from Lansing, Kansas in regards to Mr. Cool, whose nick name was “Sandy” back in the day. The city council fired him as their acting police chief;

Are those Jump master wings gold tone?? Must have spray painted them to make them even more special. Bwahahahaha

Also, it looks like he has a mustard stain on the wings as well. What an AssHole..

    • IDC SARC says:

Badges on commercial sites are just like the phony certs you can get, some look darn close to the real things and others are ridiculous forgeries never authorized.

      http://www.citationexpress.com/

I can’t believe this asshole is still in business. I see he’s even added Raider certificates to stay current.

Anything for a buck, I guess.

  2. Mike Kozlowski says:

…Jebus Cripes. A perfectly good and honorable career flushed.

    Mike

  3. Silentium Est Aureum says:

Again, for the love of Christ, why?

  4. Club Manager says:

Summit County VSO does not list an e-mail address but the Ohio DVA e-mail is, ohiovet@dvs.ohio.gov

Encourage all to send a respectful e-mail complaining about their VSO not checking DD Form 214 before highlighting this poser.

  5. ceefive says:

Nope…no Yangtse River Patrol ribbon on this one…..

  6. IDC SARC says:

The youtube interview is worth listening to. The guy tap dances awkwardly and says pretty absurd things. You’d think even with advancing age he could tell ya which schools he attended in some semblance of order.

In the end, he couldn’t name a single person that knew he was SF qualified or was on his ODA.

    Must be legit. lol

  7. MIchael says:

Recalled for Somalia? Give me a break. Apparently there’s a shortage of Special Forces soldiers that they have to recruit retired soldiers.

    • IDC SARC says:

The only SOF recalled were voluntary recalls. I don’t know if anyone came back under voluntary recall in Somalia, but there have been a few in the current GWOT.

Again, the messages went out looking for volunteers.

  8. Civilwarrior says:

Why in the actual fuck do guys do this? Why,why, why? His military career looks respectable…why is that not enough? For the record, I am proud of my drivers badge…many memories of of some shitty, cold ass interminable convoys in a GAMA Goat in Germany with no doors and no heater. I’very been mocked for wearing it, but my response is always the same: “Go fuck yourself. I earned it.”

  9. Claw says:

Well, I’m thinking this old fart may have had a service stint/break in service prior to 1962, that’s why the top two lines of the 2-1 have been redacted, but had been out long enough to be required to go back through Basic again.

But one thing is for sure. He’s not authorized to be wearing the Airmobile/Air Assault Badge. According to the paperwork he was retired a full year (31 Mar 73) before the very first class (1 Apr 74) ever started going through the school at Fort Campbell.

But talking about making up a SF career out of whole cloth, Sheesh. I say he needs to have his Safe Drivers Badge revoked for doing shit like that.

    • Perry Gaskill says:

It’s interesting that among the glittering galaxy of awards Mr. Cool has on display, one missing is one he’s actually entitled to. That’s the coveted marksman w/rifle bar badge, which shows you’re fully qualified to point a weapon down range and fire the thing without dropping it…

    • AnotherPat says:

You may be correct, Claw about Cool being in the Service or with another Sister Service before 1962.

Research indicates he was in or was with the United States Air Force (either as an Airman or Civilian) in the late 1950s/early 1960s, stationed at Denver, Colorado.

I know those records were not destroyed in the NPRC Fire (Air Force).

    • Hondo says:

Claw: if so, then NPRC fornicated Fido (AKA screwed the pooch). That information should not have been redacted, and is an essential part of the record of assignments – even if the individual served in another branch of service.

Follow-up FOIA has been prepared and goes out in tomorrow’s mail. We’ll see if the follow-up finds any other service – I’ve explicitly requested a check of all 4 armed services on this one, and should have everything required (full name, DOB, POB, dates of Army service, and Army serial number). Hopefully the name is rare enough that there’s no question in the event he served in another component prior to joining the Army in 1962.

  10. thebesig says:

When they embellish/fake service, that’s just the tip of the ice burg as has been repeatedly pointed out here. A unifying variable in this is their pattern of piss poor judgment in life. This, along with his dismissal, are but drops in the bucket for what this ding bat has in his closet.

    • IDC SARC says:

I sent a message to the Summit County Veteran’s Service Commission with the link here.

      • IDC SARC says:

I also sent a link to the youtube confession in a follow up email.

I figure they’ll either ignore me, do something about it or my inbox is gonna be full of hatemail shortly.lol

This will be my 2nd and last comment on this site.
I knew it was a mistake but posted a comment anyway, I should have known better.

This reply is mainly for jarhead on the matter concerning “A. W. “Sonny” Cool
but a few others that have commented also need to read this so I will post this to
a few other posts that have commented about Sonny.

Deciding what to do about A.W “Sonny” Cool is not on my bucket list of things
I need to do before I leave this world.
Since I can never hope to know as much as most of those that
post comments on this site, I will only add a few more comments
          and be done with it.

Quickly, I did not have any problem going back to the page
where Cool’s recording of him admitting being a phony, I seen it the 2nd day after it was
placed on our Post’s Facebook Page and had no problem understanding what was said.
I listened to the confession and recognized Sonny’s voice.

I am only one voice in our organization. So, let me say this only once,
what our Post intends to do about this phony is our business.
Anyone that has opinions on this matter and feels that
something needs to be done other than what we decide to do, knock yourself out.
If anything he has done is illegal I’m sure law enforcement can handle it.

One last thing, I wish I would have posted my comment using a more colorful name.
Using my real name must be the rooky coming out in me.

  11. A Proud infidel®™ says:

With all the effort he puts into his can game you’d think he’d bother to NOT wear his bogus beret like a pissed off French pastry cook!

  12. CA_SGT says:

I contacted Military Order of the Purple Heart asking them to look at his records and revoke his lifetime membership. How much you wanna bet this asshat is rocking PH license plates?

I’ll keep you all updated if I hear anything back.

  13. Hondo says:

Whatever this guy’s actual and complete record of service happens to be . . . lying about it and claiming to be Special Forces and having Purple Hearts when you weren’t wounded in combat – and claiming decorations for valor you don’t rate (he’s wearing a BSM w/V device in one photo) – definitely Are Non-Cool.

  14. Jarhead says:

Hurry Hurry folks, step right up. The show is just about to begin. All the sock puppets from the Marine Corps League, VFW, A L and plenty others are getting ready to support their DUES PAYING (Now THAT is the key to having a member in GOOD Standing!) member with the better-than-average sock puppet show. Hell, it doesn’t matter if he CLAIMED he was in RVN during the TET Offensive…….but changed the date of the operation to 1969. He only missed it by one year, and after all, his organization DUES ARE PAID. What else do you want? A damned D D 214? Now you know he was telling the truth when he said his M P Brigade accidentally went a few clicks north of the DMZ and destroyed four (Count ’em, FOAR!) NVA regiments before slipping back south below the DMZ. We KNOW it’s true…His dues are paid. That’s good enough for us.

It’s no damned wonder few of us belong to many of the former military organizations, i e, A L, VFW, Marine Corps League, War Heroes of RVN, Sekrit Squirrels Association, Wannabee Seals Club, and so many more. This country can rest at ease thanks to the daring exploits of all these DUES PAYING members.

As the saying goes, this ass clown is as cool as a cucumber….make that a Bernie Madoff Ponzi Scheme of Military Service for all organizations to invest in him and place him in office.

    • Jarhead says:

Sure I can see a letter of resignation requiring two pages.

      Page one……………I

      Page two……………QUIT

      • Jarhead says:

From the Weather Channel today, “Folks it’s going to be Sonny and Cool today.” If you ever hear that, you know they are lying and don’t have a clue what the day’s weather is going to be! That’s their own special clue from within that means, “Fuck ’em all. I’m so sick and tired of reporting what the dart toss showed!”

        • Jarhead says:

Last comment…I’m done stewing over this phuktard. On the Internet, the Internet Movie Database (IMD) shows one Sonny Cool is an ACTOR (no shit!) and composer, known for his folly (again, no shit!). What it does NOT show is the fact that one Sonny Cool wrote the hit song “I Shit the Sheriff, But I Did Not Shit the Deputy!”

    • Hans says:

Let me say at the start, I rarely comment on social media outlets, but after reading some of the posts in this page and specially this one because it seemed to pin some farfetched blame on our VFW Club for his deception, I had to say something.

WOW! Who shit in your Mess Kit. And who in what Veterans Organization pissed you off! I’ve been a member of the VFW for going on 37 years. The men and ladies of our Post put in a lot of hours working on veteran’s, community, scholarship, and youth programs. We donate 10’s of thousands of dollars every year to these programs. To accomplish this we put in a lot of volunteer hours. We don’t all sit around the Canteen sucking up beer and telling phony war stories.

I know Sonny and he has always been a blowhard, done everything, been everywhere kind of guy. Let me also say I’m glad he was exposed, neither me nor any of the members of our VFW Post are defending his lies and deception. He was voted into our club using the information listed on his 214.

So let me just say, there is not going to be any dog and pony/sock puppet show or what you are implying. Nun of us here at our Post are military historians we went by the information on his Discharge and that indicated he was eligible for the VFW. The bottom line is, our VFW had nothing to do with the stories he embellished about his military service.

Wrapping things up let me just say that Sonny is going to be paying for his sins for a long time.

      • IDC SARC says:

I am one of the people that posted on your public website. I am Retired military and a life member of the VFW.

I saw something egregious in your COC and brought it to your attention.

        Carry on.

      • Hondo says:

Hans: he’s in your post. Run it as you see fit.

However, I also understand Cool is your current post JA. Personally, if I were you I think I’d demand more integrity from my post leadership.

Why? If for no other reason than the fact they often handle Post funds. Plus, their actions impact the reputation of everyone in your post.

But hey, it’s your money and your and reputation – not mine. So do what you like.

      • Silentium Est Aureum says:

And when you don’t police your own, and shitbags like this run your post, don’t act so surprised when the organizations as a whole turn to warm runny shit.

Just ask the IOOF and the lying fucksticks (**cough** Toney! **cough**) about that.

Tons of posts of both the VFW and AL take phonies with a wink and a nod. Hey, they pay dues, right?

      • Jarhead says:

Hans….the answer to your question is pretty simple. The phony that shit in our mess kit was one of your own, whom you really don’t appear too concerned about because he “Was voted in using the D D 214 he provided”. If that’s the case, ANYONE who shows up with a D D 214 is likely to be voted in. Maybe he’s the life of the party with all his blowhard stories about how he’s done everything and been everywhere. YOU have missed OUR point entirely. Do you not understand how (Un)Cool’s actions are viewed as stepping on the graves of so many men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for blowhards like him to be able to lie loudly as if HE made the ultimate sacrifice? Taking credit for things you did not do, might just be taking credit for things done by those who DID make that ultimate sacrifice.
None of us question the generosity and decency of your organization and all it does. In fact, we all feel a bit of pride knowing some groups do so much for mankind. It’s just hard for us to appreciate the fact that jerkoffs like (Un)Cool are allowed to run their mouth in public representing YOUR organization, when in fact he is lying and bragging to put HIMSELF up on a pedestal above and beyond all others who volunteered and gave as much, if not more, than this big shot claims HE did. Were he to run his mouth around probably 90% of those who post here, likely someone would end up in jail. From my own personal point of view, I give a thumbs up for your organization’s efforts and volunteer work. You have obviously earned the respect you are due. On the other hand, if by some freak chance I ever happen to be in the same company as Mr. Blowhard and hear him lying through his ass…..I will personally embarrass the hell out of that loser to where anyone within a one mile range will hear what I have to say. Respect is EARNED not GIVEN just because you have a big mouth. His day will come when he runs that big mouth in front of the wrong person and realizes he might get a pass while at your meetings…..but that POS will one day regret the unconcerned generosity your organization affords him. Finally, if he gets exposed in the news and it is explained that you and others were warned, but gave him a pass on a questionable D D 214. will that not delute the generosity of the organization as a whole? Think about it Hans…..it is YOU and YOUR ORGANIZATION that stand to be embarrassed by ALLOWING this POS to run his mouth. My hope is that anyone else that shits in YOUR mess kit wipes his ass with a fake D D 214. Best wishes for doing the right thing in the future, and thank you for all you have done as a giving organization.

      • HMCS(FMF) ret. says:

Hans – take a few minutes and look at some of the posers that have been exposed at this website. Many of them have passed off fake documents to not just the VFW but other veterans organizations or have been allowed to join because the local posts have not been enforcing the rules for membership.

Here’s a link about getting info for membership from the NPRC that is on this site:

        http://thisainthell.us/blog/?page_id=39605

If posts would actually do the legwork and ask the prospective member to sign off on a SF-180, many of the Stolen Valor problems could be stopped at the door of that post.

In the instance of an individual like Sandy/Sonny, the individual post should handle it in house.

I’m glad that you post does a lot in the community and is handling Sandy/Sonny issue. That being said, there are more than a few of us on this blog that are reluctant about joining a vets organization for the reasons listed above. When local posts start taking membership seriously and word get out that they are above board on doing business, then you should see younger vets wanting your post.

One last thing – I agree with Hondo about Sandy/Sonny’s position as your JA. It’s your business about how you handle it, but you may want to insist on an audit of post funds if he has access to them. We’ve seen it before where a individual accused of SV has stolen money from the post based on their position as an officer.

        Good luck…

      • Bobo says:

You’re correct, based on his DD-214, he is eligible for VFW membership. But, I’m guessing that he paraded around in that costume at the post or post activities several times. You also said that “has always been a blowhard, done everything, been everywhere kind of guy.” Did you ever pull his DD-214 that he used to gain membership and check it against his claims or uniform? Did you check it when he ran for post JA? Honestly, someone doesn’t need to be a “military historian” to know that an MP is not SF, and that there was no mention of CIBs, Airborne, Pathfinder, HALO, Air Assault, Ranger, or Special Forces schooling. All you had to do was check his DD-214. You’re right in that your VFW post had nothing to do with him telling his stories, but you should have called him out on it when he first started at the post and you had his DD-214. Part of the reason why he’s here is because your post didn’t do the right thing when this started.

  15. HMCS(FMF) ret. says:

Sandy/Sonny shit all over his perfectly good service by rocking the lie. Listening to him on both clips pissed me off, I was waiting to hear the “I caught the PTSD” line or some other excuse.

I hope that when he passes on and is judged by his maker, that his wife is there waiting for him (saw an obit showing that she passed away in 2011) and wears his ass out for lying to her.

Congrats Sandy/Sonny “UN” Cool – your dumb ass is internet famous now.

  16. AnotherPat says:

I’m giving Mr. Cool the credit for finally coming clean and admitting that he lied.

He is a lot better than others who continue with their charade even though they have been caught red handed.

What do military police attached to a infantry battalion do? Process POW’s?

  19. Mark Lauer says:

I have a feeling that he’s NOT around 80 years of age either. I know he mentions that in the phone interview, but that would be a ploy for sympathy.

  20. Hondo says:

His FOIA says he’s retired. Around age 80 would be about right for someone who retired in 1973 with 20 or more years of service.

For someone who was retired early for medical reasons, not so much.

    • HMCS(FMF) ret. says:

Could there have been a TERA at that time? I’m just a little too young to remember that stuff from the Vietnam era…

      • Hondo says:

To the best of my knowledge, no: no TERA post-Vietnam. I certainly don’t remember any talk of one – and I’m old enough to remember it, and knew enough people who would have been affected that I’m reasonably certain I’d have heard of one had it been offered.

A fine man I knew ended up RIFed and reverting from officer to enlisted status not long after Vietnam. He did his last 2+ years as an E7, then retired. If he’d not have been prior enlisted, he’d have been shown the door with severance and a handshake.

Bottom line, if this guy retired early my money’s on medical. I’m pretty sure there was no TERA in the 1970s. I might be wrong, but I don’t think I am.

  21. C2Show says:

Got the same bday as me, ain’t he Cool?

  22. Claw says:

Well, shoot, the old farthead tapped out too soon. I was literally foaming at the mouth in anticipation of hearing his story on how he received the CIB and a Purple Heart in Korea while he was still 14 years old.

But there is a silver lining to all this. He probably spent well over 500 or 600 bucks altogether for a set of the new ASU’s, (including alterations/chevrons/etc)a chef’s hat beret, all the false bling bling ribbons/badges, and a new set of jump boots to complete the outfit. However, he’ll probably never be able to wear that clown suit out in public again. It’ll just have to stay hanging in a closet somewhere for the rest of eternity.

BTW, does anybody else out there wanna bet he showed up for Rudy’s funeral in low quarters? You can’t see his footwear in the picture, but to me it sure looks like the pants aren’t bloused.

  23. A Proud Infidel®™ says:

WHOA, waitaminnit! Last time I checked with good ‘ol AR 670-1 the blue discs and shoulder cord were INFANTRY ONLY, somebody smack me upside my head if I’m wrong, and wouldn’t ANY and every NCO worth more than half a flaming squirrel shit make sure their collar brass is no less than perfectly shined? His look grubbier than a filthy third world roadside cafe table, let alone all of the foreign “bling” above his right pocket, last time I checked one was authorized to display only ONE foreign badge or decoration and it looks like he has a flea market booth’s worth of stuff there!

    • IDC SARC says:

Yes, his uniform infractions, like the pattern of inheritance in many disease, is what is termed, multifactorial. In labspeak it would be TNTC…Too Numerous To Count.lol

  24. 2/17 Air Cav says:

There’s a gentleman about whom I have written about previously. He is quiet. He has a pretty good military record, too. He was invited to be the guest of honor at a local baseball game last year and accepted. He talked to the rapt crowd about the value of teamwork. He spoke nothing of himself and was neatly attired in civies. Were it not for the ball cap that read “RANGER,” there was nothing flashy about him. No bling. No nothing. So? So the gentleman’s military awards and decorations include a Distinguished Service Cross and seven (!) Silver Stars. His name is Charles E. Getz. Here’s link to a tribute page. And those of you who doubt the seven Silver Stars, I don’t blame you one bit. I was incredulous, too–before I read the citations. Eat your ever-lovin’ heart out MISTER Cool.

I got lost on land nav once but found my point so I’m gonna throw on a Pathfinder badge. I climbed a rope once and then slid down, so I think I’ll throw on Air Assault. I hate these people.

  27. Green Thumb says:

    Just another “uncool” turd.

  28. Jarhead says:

It looks like myself and others did not really catch what Another Pat was trying to say. Finally I scrolled down from the top a bit slower and noticed there were two identical screen shots of this guy, each with separate stories. Yes, on the second one he did admit he was lying the whole time. Didn’t really sound too trite, nor wanting to appease the issue. It really sounded to me as he had finally caved in to all his lies that were bringing unwanted heat on him.

What I ABSOLUTELY DO likewise find interesting is the lack of mention from mess kit shit inspector Mr. Hans. True, he may not be able to figure out how to get back on the page where Cool’s admission of guilt came to be what it was. Something of the tiniest of
comments admitting being at least slightly embarrassed would have been accepted as sufficient. You know, sometimes you just wonder what goes on in the heads of people who are in charge? Anyway, that about locks up another POSER from start to Finish. Does not appear to be going to make much difference as far as the organization is concerned. Just sweep it under the rug and on & on we go.

FYI this was posted on the Firestone VFW Post 3383 FP Page:

“A recent post on our web site by “Green Beret Posers Exposed” accused one of our members, Arnon “Sonny” Cool of falsifying his military records. In response, Officers of Firestone VFW Post 3383 take these charges very seriously and action will be taken.”

I’m trying to find the meaning of a combo not read about ur guys fake bull crap!

  31. 2/17 Air Cav says:

It is very, very difficult to construct a single line that makes no sense to anyone. I think Liz’s point is that she dislikes Combos, those cheesy, bite-sized snacks.

    • OWB says:

      Oh. OK, then.

      • Jerry Haynes says:

Ahem. If I may translate for Liz, I believe I have cracked the code: Liz was pursuing a web query regarding the meaning behind a particular medal or “combo” as she puts it. Instead she was directed to a thread which she fails to find useful for her purposes. I guess you could say I speak retard. Yes, I’m aware of the light in which that might put me.

  32. OWB says:

For Hans and whoever else might be reading this: There are some things which should indeed be handled privately within a post, but even those things are supposed to be done according to national rules, not handled however a post wants to handle things this week. That is for the protection of both the individual post and the national service organization. Without standards, you risk a chaotic response to many things, like what to do in the event of funds or other post property going missing. Membership standards are national. You don’t get to choose who is and who is not eligible for membership.

You guys want a lying PoS as an officer? Fine by me – I’m not a member of your post, but I am a Life Member of the VFW.

Actions and inactions have consequences. What you do reflects upon my organization not just upon your little corner of the world. Can’t be open and above board about your willingness to abide by the rules? That is an invitation for the rest of us to watch your post very closely for a very long time.

  33. IDC SARC says:

From the VFW Post 3383 FB Page this morning:

“The post officers got his post keys back from him, he is no longer on or in charge of the burial team and he will Be replaced as the post judge advocate.”

  34. Claw says:

Hondo/Jonn, thanks for the updated 2-1 info on Sonny Cool. I had been wondering what had been redacted on the original 2-1.

So, 10 years in the AF as a Missile Elec Repair Tech. Capped out at E-5 before going to the Army to become an MP. I guess that solves the questions about a possible medical retirement at the 11 year mark.

Shoot, he may as well have just stayed in the AF and cross trained to become an AF cop.

That way if he had retired out of the AF as an E-7 he could have called himself a real Master Sergeant instead of trying to embellish the rank from the Army side.

    Again, Thanks for the updates.

I visit this site every day and really enjoy seeing posers exposed. Seems really strange that Cool could join the Rakkasans and not have been exposed right there. His claim to have joined the Army in Nov 1950 at age 14 and then complete basic, infantry, and jump school before joining the unit in January 1951 was a big WTF. Again great site!
