George Winfrey, phony Marine

| July 21, 2017 | 59 Comments

Someone saw this article in the Press Telegram about homeless veteran George Winfrey;

Winfrey is a homeless veteran.

According to Winfrey, he spent 13 years in the Marine Corps, embarking on five tours of duty, earning two Purple Hearts and attaining the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.

These days, he sleeps each night outside a doorway in downtown Long Beach.

[…]

“I fought for this country. My fighting days should be over,” Winfrey said. “I should be able to walk in and say, ‘I’m a veteran. I need housing. I need help, can you help me?’”

Winfrey said he doesn’t believe he deserves a handout, but veterans living on the streets strikes him as unjust.

“The two words that should never be in the same sentence, homeless and veteran — should never be in the same sentence,” he said.

[…]

“Marines are about adapt and overcome,” he said. “Whatever you’re doing, you have to decide, is that going to work for your exit plan to get out of the street?”

Yeah, no, he wasn’t in the Marine Corps. For about 75 days, 31 years ago he was in the Army. He was an Entry Level Separation – not really a veteran. I also don’t see any deployments or Purple Hearts and the Army only remembers his rank as private (E-1). It looks like he had physical fitness problems;

His problems go deeper than homelessness. He has an arrest record in Florida that includes grand theft and possession of cocaine;

I admire the fact that he pulled himself up by his bootstraps and that he’s proud of his job, but, kindly leave us out of it. I hope he continues to prosper and improve his life, but lying won’t help much at all.

Very bad taste in clothing. Must be design blind.

  2. USMCMSgt(Ret) says:

He “identifies” as a Marine, so I guess he gets a pass.

    Right?

    (Fuck this guy)

  3. 1610desig says:

A military phony and a felon…the two slices of bread that hold this shit sandwich together…., sure, I wish him well but wish those who are helping him out even better…

  4. Mayhem says:

Maybe he meant to say he was a Gonorrhea Sergeant… I don’t know, just sayin.

  5. Texas Nomad says:

“Winfrey said he doesn’t believe he deserves a handout”

The words everyone uses shortly before saying they believe they deserve a handout.

  6. River Rat: RVN says:

I have an idea of how to put an end to this type of fraud: How about if the Cub Reporters like Jimmy Olsen, start doing a little investigating into the claims of these folks?

Then, and only then after the claim is verified it goes to public as factual. If the claim is false, that goes public too.

Perhaps some good old fashion shame will cause some of these frauds to think twice.

With the resources available today, it doesn’t take a Sherlock Holmes to find out the truth, or who is full of excrement of the male bovine.

      Too much work.

    • Graybeard says:

Jimmy Olsen would do better, but J. Jonah Jameson is after his tail to get something to press now!

    • Commissar says:

Reporter wages are very low and the workload is pretty high. Agency demands just do not give time or resources for long investigative time lines. The time between an interview and a FOIA request response is just too long.

      • Jack says:

That sounds like a cop out. If the story is worth printing, then it’s worth taking the time to fact check.

      • Ex-PH2 says:

Well, there’s another exercise in pure ignorance on the part of the COMMISSAR LARS TAYLOR the Poodledicked Piuperdink. Running off at the mouth again, he is, is with no backup or facts.
In fact, the pay scale for reporters depends entirely on location and whether or not the reporter is an employee or a freelancer/stringer. A full-time employee will find a salary range from $45,000/yr to $75,000, depending on where s/he works, whereas a stringer is paid by the story, a per-piece arrangement, frequently based on word count and photos included. It’s a rather lucrative field, especially if someone is an anchor like Diane Sawyer, whose annual income is roughly $12 million, or CNN’s Anderson Cooper, who pulls in about $11 million.

But, as always, LARS TAYLOR sticks his oar in and rambles on about something when he knows nothing about it at all. That’s probably simply to stir the pot so that he can point and say ‘they’re SO mean’ when he brings it on himself.

For someone who claims to have done all that research of some kind, his ‘research’ skill levels are sadly lacking.

  7. Combat Historian says:

A felonious liar who uses his basically non-existent military service as a cudgel to bash gullible reporters and civilians over their heads about his own self-inflicted afflictions and conditions, and in the meantime creating ugly stereotypes about military veterans…

  8. Ex-PH2 says:

I’m waiting for him to claim he’s related (somehow) to Oprah. Should we tell her about him?

  9. Mick says:

If this assclown was in Marine Aviation, his callsign would be ‘Oprah’.

    TINS.

  10. A Proud Infidel®™ says:

Maybe he’s related to Oprah Winfrey and he thought he heard her say”…EVERYBODY here gets an EGA…”, so he claimed it in between companionship periods with Bubba, Thor, Julio and “Tiny”?

  11. Claw says:

22 July 86 to 07 Oct 86 sounds like just the amount of time we spent in back to backs that summer which started out with grinding every dinosaur turd at Pinon Canyon under our tracks to a fishing trip at Bicycle Lake.

You’re 36 days short of the Gunga Dan line, George. Back to the farm club for you.

  12. Hack Stone says:

I think that is fucked up when a celebrity that we all watched and loved as we grew up in the 1960’s has fallen on hard times. I just hope that Nipsey Russell is able to turn things around and enjoy his golden years, like O.J. Simpson.

  13. A Proud Infidel®™ says:

75 days? At least he has more time in service than Jon Giduck!

  14. Green Thumb says:

UI have never seen an honorably discharged service member with real combat experience that is homeless.

    Clown.

    • 11 Bravo says:

I agree! Surprised he didn’t talk about parachuting in the jungles in Vietnam, all alone, with one bullett left! Think of something else AH! We paid our dues, you are a lying want 2 b!

  15. CPT11A says:

Motherfucker wants to be a Marine, let him be a Marine. Send his ass to Parris Island as an E-1.

No pay, no MARPAT, no duties where he in any way represents the Marine Corps (such as CQ). Just constant KP and other shit-scrubbing details. Don’t piss hot either, because any failure to complete your four year term will result in ten years at Leavenworth.

  16. Stick Stickly says:

So many posers in the last several weeks, it makes me wonder: are we going to have a stolen valor tournament this year? It’s been a long, long time since we voted for the shittiest of the shitbags.

Or are we just going to appoint a certain phony CPO, disbarred attorney, and all-around batshit crazy faker as our stolen valor champion for life and call it a day?

  17. O-4E says:

I got a feeling the guy who hired him, the owner who is a Vet himself, isn’t going to be none too happy when he finds out about this.

  18. OlafTheTanker says:

    1986 – Delta 2-1 Ft Knox?

Shitbird was in the next class right after I graduated.

I mean, it was no “today’s Army” but still, pretty hard to screw up being a Tanker back then without SERIOUSLY trying to.

  19. rgr769 says:

Just another lying POSer homeless bum falsely claiming to be a veteran. The media loves this BS that many combat veterans are homeless. California Department of Veterans Affairs used to host “stand downs” around the state for “homeless veterans.” Since practically none of them had a real DD214 of their own, anyone who claimed to be one would get the free meals and other bennies. Pretty soon many of the state VA employees hosting them began to notice the same bums were showing up in different locations throughout the state. I would venture that less than a quarter of those “veterans” actually served more than a year of honorable active duty, if they served at all. Most were like this phony POSer, A BCT washout. I’d like to know where he thinks he was wounded in combat, twice, between 1986 and 1999, as a Marine. Oh, I know, he was in the Beirut bombings, got one PH at the embassy and a second one at the barracks. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

  20. HMC Ret says:

Tomorrow, 22JUL, is George’s date of entry. Maybe PH can bake him a cake. And make him a sammich.

  21. D says:

Here’s another article on him that was written by the same guy: http://www.presstelegram.com/events/20170409/for-one-homeless-veteran-grand-prix-job-offers-a-glimmer-of-hope

In this one, he claims a Purple Heart.

  22. OldManchu says:

    But… Racism?
