Stars & Stripes reports that on Saturday, al-Shabab militants in Mogadishu, Somalia detonated a truck bomb which killed more than 300 people and injured 400 others. In response, US forces there have stepped up drone operations;

The U.S. has stepped up its military involvement in the Horn of Africa nation since President Donald Trump approved expanded military operations against the group early this year. The U.S. has carried out at least 19 drone strikes in Somalia since January, according to The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, which tracks U.S. drone strikes in a number of countries.

Earlier this week, a Pentagon spokesman said the United States has about 400 troops in Somalia and “we’re not going to speculate” about sending more.

One US servicemember has been killed in operations in Somalia since the increased involvement of US forces there.

    What was the point to that truck bombing in the first place? I only get sketchy speculation from people who weren’t there when I try to find real news stories. Is this still the warlords at work?

    That’s all part of the Afar rift zone which has become more active since 2006. The most dangerous volcano in the world, Erta Ale, is between Mogadishu and Djibouti, with increased activity and rifts that are releasing poisonous gases. It won’t go away, either. It will only continue because it’s the Earth at work.

    And these idiot warlords are squabbling over who gets to run the show? The are just plain nuts.

      BBC had an article where the local leader(s) were blaming an Islamist extremist group, but the group was not claiming responsibility.

      The whole place is one big cesspool as far as I can tell.

    Its a real shame they decommissioned the Iowa, Somalia seems like a good place to expend some of that surplus 16″ ammo…

    Where’s Col. Mike Hoare of 1960’s 5 Commando fame when you need him to straighten out the mess.
