Melvin Douglas; needless embellishment

| January 9, 2018 | 108 Comments

Our partners at Military Phonies send us their work on this fellow Melvin Curry Douglas who claims to be 20-year-veteran of the US Marine Corps as well as a combat veteran of Beirut, Grenada, Honduras, Panama, Desert Storm and Kosovo. He also claims to have left the Corps as a Gunnery Sergeant (E-7).

He was a drill instructor, briefly, in 1994;

According to his records, Douglas left the Marine Corps as a Staff Sergeant in 1994, eight before the 20-year mark that he claims. He did serve in the Gulf War and he served aboard the USS Guam in the Adriatic Sea while that ship was supporting Operation Provide Promise in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

From Military Phonies, a summary;

What is clear is that his records do not support his claim of being in Grenada or Beirut. He was with BLT 1/6 at the time and they did not participate in either. The 31st MAU was offshore of Beirut briefly and had 3/3 on board, but they left the area when needed elsewhere. Douglas was with 3rd MARDIV (Okinawa) at the time so conceivably could have been a member of BLT 3/3. If he was and the ship was off shore, then he would be a Beirut veteran.

On page 9 of the FOIA results, it shows that Douglas was awarded a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (SSDR) on 19 Nov 1983. He was with 3rd MARDIV at the time so this award could not be related to BLT 1/8. BLT 1/8 members received a SSDR for ending their mission to Beirut around this same date.

Douglas claims he was with BLT 1/8, but he joined 1/8 much later in June 1984. BLT 1/8 and BLT 3/3 were not part of the Grenada invasion on 25 Oct 1983, so by claiming he was in Grenada it undermines his Beirut claim since his records do not support that.

We suspect that the claim of being in six combat zones were a result of ships that he deployed on perhaps entered the territorial waters of regional skirmishes. Due to the billets that he held at the time (i.e. Marine Detachment on USS Missouri, etc.), Douglas would not be in a position to go ashore and participate in ground operations.

This is parsing words – having “six combat zones under your belt” and being in combat are two different things but it is implied they are one and the same. He did state his claim emphatically when he spoke of “my days as a killer on the battlefields of Panama, Grenada, Honduras, Beirut, Kosovo, and The Gulf War“, so there is little room for doubt about what Douglas was claiming.

To wrap this up – Douglas’ military records do not support a claim of him being in combat in Grenada or Beirut. This casts some doubt that he was a Beirut veteran but the possibility exists that his ship was in territorial waters briefly, which would qualify. The fact remains that he was not a combat veteran of either Beirut or Grenada, according to his records.

“Needless embellishment”, indeed. His career was an honorable one that ended during the Clinton-era TERA period – to include a legit decoration for valor in combat and DI service.

Sad. Of course, it’s not the first time we’ve SeEn SoMeThInG LiKe ThAt, either.

  2. 1610desig says:

Everything about this dude screams “asshole”…even without that fucked up hat….

    • IDC SARC says:

Yeah, being a lying, racist kinda overrides whatever he actually did IMO. He’s obviously made a conscious decision to not live by the values and ideals of the Corps.

      • Mason says:

And preferring not to type/speak like a hood rat instead of an educated staff NCO. If he was a DI, he knows how to act professionally. I expect my leaders of men to be adults.

        • Just An Old Dog says:

He also was a Marksmanship Training Instructor for recruits at Edson Range on the west coast.
Something definitely took a turn for the worse when he went to DI duty. He finished school, then after one Platoon he was assigned as the Bn Building and Grounds NCO for about a week then sent to the hospital for about 2-3 weeks. It looks like he was returned to duty as Blg and Grounds NCO and never pushed or handled recruits again. Those 6 or 7 Months was probably him awaiting the findings of the medical board.
There is no telling if it was a physical or mental issue.
He did have a good career up to that point, but then again he probably just was able to hide his racist beliefs and played his cards right to keep getting promotions and assignments.

    • HMCS(FMF) ret says:

      A very bigoted asshole…

  3. bombstopr says:

All that and he couldn’t make Gunny? Hmmmmmmm

    • Just An Old Dog says:

Looking at his records He picked up Staff Sergeant in early 1992, as evidenced by the change in primary duty (CHIPRDU) entry and mos from 0311 ( rifleman) to 0369 (Small Unit Infantry Leader).
That’s a good time, actually about average or a little faster to pick up SSGT.
He had about two years in grade when he was sent to medical and they began to process him for discharge.
He would be considered non-selectable for GySgt because of that, Plus it typically takes about 4 years in Grade to be eligible.

I got this. The “D” on that short brimmed hat stands for any one of the following:

    Dorkwad
    Dweebster
    Doofus
    Dumbass
    Dipstick
    Dingbatski
    Dissembler

A valor device and a battle E would be welcome additions to just about anyone’s ribbon rack. Douchebag.

    • Atkron says:

I saw my Recruiter’s Battle E ribbon…and I wanted one. Who wouldn’t want to be in the best unit on whichever Coast you were stationed on?

I ended up with three of them.

  6. Daisy Cutter says:

Hard to believe that he was put in a position to be an influence on young Marines.

  8. Graybeard says:

Melvin Douglas outperformed many, many folks – including me – but then had to destroy his “attaboys” with his lies.

    Sad.

  9. An Old Arty Sgt says:

He was a DI in Jan 94, guessing that was his 1st class since he finished school in Sep 93. Then discharged Aug 94? Always thought Drill Sgt Duty was a 3 yr tour…

    • CWORet says:

It is. My thoughts are an “awww shit!” of some sort caused him to be removed from the drill field, and subsequently denied re-enlistment.

      • CWORet says:

Actually, since his duty status is “Retired”, so I think Brown Neck below has a better and more likely explanation below. At some point he was hurt, and eventually retired at 20.

    • Cris says:

Don’t remember what year it became a 3 yr tour, but it was a 2 yr tour before that.

I may have bumped into this douchebag when the Missouri paid a visit to Pearl Harbor and a couple of friends and I put on our ‘charlies’ and went to visit it. One of the ship’s detachment Marines saw us and brought us aboard, by-passing the 3000 folks in line. Although, at the time I didn’t know him, a buddy of mine was part of that detachment also. I’ll have to ask him about this numbnuts.

  10. OldManchu says:

Melvin Douglas gets to use the N______ word because it makes his claims legit.

Melvin Douglas is responsible for every single dead PDF in Panama because he is a straight up killa’ in attack mode.

Melvin Douglas can’t spell or punctuate.

Melvin Douglas doesn’t respect the United States Marine Corps.

Melvin Douglas doesn’t respect his own military service or the service of other veterans.

Melvin Douglas is the ugliest Marine D.I. to ever exist.

    • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

Melvin Douglas acts and talks like a hood rat like he thinks doing so will gain him respect and street creds, I wonder if he’s ever been arrested? One thing is for sure, Melvin Douglas talks like a hate-filled disciple of AL Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and other leftist hatemongers, IMHO he’s one of their “Useful Idiots”.

  12. Keepin' It Real says:

    RE: https://militaryphonies.files.wordpress.com/2016/07/douglas-white-people.jpg

“there aint nothing more nasty, than when out at a restaurant eating your chow, and a white person blows they dam nose, when you eating your chow, and [deleted] they got the nerve to look at the meat in they napkin!”

As a white person, I was initially offended by this comment. The short sightedness of lumping us all together in sterotypical fashion.

Then I realized, I absolutely blow my nose like this. In fact, I blow so hard that moose collect up outside thinking it’s mating season. And yes, full disclosure, I “look at the meat” when I’m done. So, Melvin Douglas, you got me on that one!

I apologize to all the white folk out there because I contribute to this stereotype.

Seriously, lighten up. It’s disheartening to think there is that much hate in the world. If we can’t laugh at ourselves, what’s the world coming to.

I see these people show up every now and then that purposefully write in ignorant speak.
Smelvin “Dougie” Fresh may very well be literate but just trying to stay relevant and maintain the Thug Life™ persona.
As to the snot-blowing, I excuse myself to the restroom or at the very least, duck down low below the table if it’s an IED sneeze.
If I am sick, then I do look at the napkin/tissue/shirt sleeve/neighbor to see if it is infected so as to treat it, not treasure or share it or remain around others.
And I do not place the napkin (cloth or paper) on the table or for the poor waiter to clear off. It goes in the garbage.
Just like it’s important to check other functions to make sure you are not dying of cancer.
Smelvin Curry-Curry-Curry-to-the-toilette DouglASS is a POS.
I suspect he had not earned ANY medals/awards and was probably a shitty DI with some nepotism thrown in for help. You can correct my perception but I’ve seen too much of it in the workplace to discount it.

Calling out a Gold Star family with a racist rant like that?

Yeah, your career was cut short, and it certainly doesn’t give you a pass to pull the shit you have since then.

    UNSAT. Roll back, repeat.

  15. Andy says:

I suppose the Marine made a man out of him but the gutter punk in him just could not be quelled. Why do people do that crap when they have an otherwise great record?

    Senseless

  16. Brown Neck Gaitor says:

    Question/comment.

He was placed on TDRL (Temp Duty Retired List) when he left in 94.

“A service member is placed on TDRL only if his condition is not stable, he has Total Combined Military Disability Rating of 30% or higher, and there is a chance that he could improve enough to return to full duty or seriously worsen within the next five years.”

So did he get better and choose to retire or did they just officially retire him at 20?

“When on TDRL, it is as though the service member is medically retired from the military. He does not perform any military duties, is given a temporary Military Disability Rating of at least 50%, and receives full Military Disability Benefits from the DoD and the VA.

During the TDRL period, the service member must be occasionally re-evaluated (generally every 18 months) to determine the progress of his condition and his disability ratings updated to reflect any changes in his condition.

If the condition improves enough during his time on TDRL, the PEB may find the condition no longer unfitting. In that case, the service member can choose to either return to full active duty or permanently retire from the military. If he chooses to return to full duty, all DoD disability benefits he was receiving during TDRL will stop.

If the service member chooses to permanently retire or if the condition worsens, or at least does not improve, and becomes relatively stable, the PEB will medically retire or medically separate the service member with a permanent Military Disability Rating based on the severity of his condition at that time.

All TDRL cases will receive a permanent rating based only on the VASRD criteria that is in effect at the end of the TDRL period.”

I’m the Gold Star Family member that he made the disparaging remarks to. I wish this site would allow me to post a screenshot of the last message I received from him. If you think you’re disturbed by what you have seen so far from him, I promise it only gets worse.

  19. Amanda Winter says:

Here’s a copy/paste of a portion of the hate-filled message (one of them) that I received from him. My father was Major William E Winter, USMC, killed in action, Beirut, Lebanon, 23 October 1983.

Peace! And there you white folk go again, trying to shoot a brothers creed down, well guess, I didn’t my daddy to tell me shit, so f— you b—-! And I never another marine behind bitch! F— you cracker swine Klan f—s, just like I told you earlier, you and your f—ing cracker race pigs rather shoot a black man down than show equal treatment, I bet you didn’t have all dat f—in tough b—- heart telling that faggot Hayes off, f—y’all cracker d— sucking white b—-es, and your f—ing Klan ass kids b—-, so leave that behind white bleeding b—-! I edited out the profanity…. he did not extend that courtesy to me when he sent me the original message.

    • Graybeard says:

      Miss Winter:

We at TAH are sincerely sorry for the grief this ignorant and racist individual has given you and your family.

We here support you and your fellow Gold Star families. You have our gratitude for the sacrifice your family has made.

    • Ex-PH2 says:

Perhaps ‘Needless Profanity’ could be added to the title of this article.

I despise anyone whips out the race card right off the bat, especially when there is NO basis for it. What Mr. Douglas has done is despicable, at the very least.

      I won’t apologize for him.

He needs to apologize publicly here to everyone, especially Ms. Winter and her family.

      The burden is on him.

    • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

Miss Winter, I also wish to say I’m sorry for the uncalled for abuse you suffered from that no-class gutter material, you deserved none of that. The more I learn about him, the more convinced I am that Melvin Douglas is little more than an angry punk who has issues with himself and his past, he harbors a lot of anger towards himself and projects it towards others. IMHO he’s a bitter little man who feels he has to bully others to feed his own ego. Melvin Douglas has gained the attention of the Stolen Valor crowd which has many people that won’t put up with him and his crud, people who won’t back down.

    • SFC D says:

My apologies to you as well, ma’am. No family member should ever have to endure that from a poser.
I understood very little of his rant. Although I am fluent in authentic frontier gibberish, my skills are sorely lacking in phony ‘hood gibberish.

Hopefully Dave Hardin will roll in hot on this Beirut phony ASAP.

  22. SSG Kane says:

I am reserving judgement on this guy. He earned a CAR and a NAM with V, which aren’t easy to get. In Iraq I supported Marines who took fire from the enemy, did hooha hooha stuff in response and weren’t awarded the Combat Action Ribbon and while they recieved NAMs, JSCMs and Commendation Medals they all lacked the V device.

So he did something, somewhere…or he got someone to fudge his awards.

    • OWB says:

Would join you in reserving judgement, except that this clown doesn’t deserve an iota of sympathy. He apparently attacked a Gold Star family.

Nope. That act neutralized any previous respect and courtesy he earned from his service. No excuse for it.

      • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

        ^^^^DITTO^^^^

      • SFC D says:

Stomped his pecker flat, he did

      • SSG Kane says:

Allow me to appologize for my lack of clarity. My reserved judgment is for his claims of service and accomplishments. Not for his raging case of assholism.

I suspect there are records missing and as a result we dont have the full story there.

As for him as an individual: He is a racist asshole. And rather proud of it.

        • OWB says:

I completely understand. I really do want to respect and honor the service of others no matter what else they have done with their lives. Becoming a criminal after military service, for instance, makes it difficult to respect the earlier actions of a veteran, but it can be done.

The problem with guys like this is that their actions today tend to make us wonder just how honorable their service really was.

  23. Joseph Williams says:

How did he get 4 Good Cookies? Has the Marine Corps changed the requrement from 4 years to 3 ? 12 =3 Joe

I found it interesting that Melvin Douglas seems more concerned with the title of Drill Instructor attached to his name than with the responsibility that it brings. He should be more concerned with setting an example for all of the Marines that he trained, and these hate-filled rants would be disappointing for some of them to read.

    • Green Thumb says:
