“Shitholes” and stuff

| January 12, 2018 | 162 Comments

Yesterday, the Washington Post (Huffington Post link because I ended my subscription to the Washington Post because I disagree with their editorial policy – the Huffington Post doesn’t require a subscription) claimed that President Trump referred to migration to the Untied States from “shitholes” in Haiti, El Salvador and Africa. The President denies that he said that, but that doesn’t matter in the world of journalism these days. The Washington Post’s anonymous sources (who, by the way, weren’t at the meeting when the comment was supposedly made) are news.

A number of people came out and called Trump’s characterization, whether he said it or not, insulting to immigrants. Well, that’s just ridiculous – he didn’t call immigrants shitholes, he called the countries they come from “shitholes” – maybe. The immigrants from those countries would have to agree – why else would they be immigrants?

It’s funny that Haiti’s ambassador to the US took offense;

Yeah, well, if you don’t like being called a shithole, stop being a shithole.

When the US left Panama at the turn of the century, they quickly descended into shithole-level poverty. Within a few years, they got tired of it and began digging themselves out of “shitholiness” and voila.

They modernized the Panama Canal, making it wider for modern ship traffic and they began working on their automobile traffic congestion.

Other countries like El Salvador and Haiti send their people to the US instead of doing the hard work to rebuild their countries’ infrastructure and economies. Their idea of an economy is to live off of the cash those immigrants send home in remissions.

El Salvador’s embassy estimates that 500,000 Salvadorans live in the Metro DC area – El Salvador’s population is 5 million people – so 10% of El Salvador’s population live in the DC Metro area. It seems to me that many people would be a benefit to the country’s improvement – especially after they experienced life in the US.

Thought one of the defenses against libel is actual truth? If so, Trump should get off scot-free… from everything I have ever seen reported, shit-hole is a compliment. (Also note that Trump claims that he never actually said that and that all the ‘sources’ are anonymous.)

  4. The Other Whitey says:

Assuming he said it, all he did was state the obvious. What’s the problem?

Besides, I could list dozens of places in my home state, the People’s Liberal Democrat Paradise of California, that each qualify as a shithole by any objective definition of the term. Hell, let’s look outside the state. Would Baltimore’s (another democrat stronghold) astronomical murder rate be a qualifying criteria? Or maybe another faithful DNC bastion (notice a pattern here?), Detroit? Steven Crowder and Not-Gay Jared did a video tour of that city a few months ago on YouTube. It was the literal definition of a shithole. Seriously, you could see clumps of shit on the sidewalk in some places.

Is this just another example of leftist identity politics gone off the deep end?

    • 2/17 Air Cav says:

Somehow, the Baltimore Sun managed to push that per capita murder-rate record down and off to the side. It should be a daily headline in that once-grand newspaper. Hell, that outfit wouldn’t hire its most famous writer as a mail boy today. H.L. Mencken was not one for political correctness.

    • LC says:

Honest answer? The problem is it’s bad politics. We can debate back and forth all day whether calling a country a ‘shithole’ implies anything about the people there, but at the end of the day, it’s just not helpful for the ‘leader of the free world’ to say such things.

It reduces our influence and standing in the world because, regardless of whether you think various places are ‘shitholes’ or not, it’s in poor form for a President to say. We aren’t ‘making America great again’ by having everyone else think we’re a bunch of assholes.

If anyone thinks this somehow helps us, I’d love to hear the logic behind that.

      • 2/17 Air Cav says:

True. Drawing meaningless red lines is the stuff of statesmanship. Nothing commanded the respect of the world–especially our enemies–as the Baracka regime. And Carter. Now there was a tough sob. Had Iran quaking in their sandals as I recall. Bad politics? Trump’s job description does not include diplomat, notwithstanding his conditional treaty-making power.

        • LC says:

The President of the United States does not play a diplomatic role? My mind boggles.

          • Jonn Lilyea says:

In a private meeting? Where it took anonymous sources to tattle on him? C’mon.

            • LC says:

Oh, I’ve got plenty of scorn for whoever leaked this too – what other countries didn’t know about the President’s attitude towards them probably didn’t hurt them. But c’mon, he’s got to be smarter than that.

If I’m at work, in a private meeting with various managers, and I talk about how Becky the secretary is so ugly I’d have to get a paper bag over her head if we ever hooked up… I’m an idiot. Because if that gets out, HR is coming, and even if the initial report is anonymous, it gets me a reputation… or fired. It’s on me to not put myself in that position. It’s not on others to keep quiet about my remarks.

That’s assuming it’s true. He denies it, so if this was someone making shit up, then they’re responsible for this miniature shit-storm. Basic rule: Don’t say or do stupid shit that can get you in trouble if it gets out.

              • Jonn Lilyea says:

According to Don Surber, the two tattletales weren’t even in the meeting.

                • LC says:

And according to Tim Scott (R-SC), Lindsey Graham (R-SC, and at the meeting) said it’s ‘basically accurate’. And Dick Durbin (D-IL, and at the meeting) explicitly says Trump said shithole.

Now, Tom Cotton (R-AR) and David Perdue (R-GA) both say they ‘do not recall’ the President using that term… which depending on your point of view is either a lame non-denial or an honest indication it didn’t happen.

Who knows. If true, it’s a stupid thing to say though.

                  • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

You consider a scumbag like Dick[head] Durbin a reliable source?

                    • LC says:

Not particularly – I did list all the comments I’d seen on it, not just Durbin’s. Lindsey Graham is beating around the bush and saying he ‘confronted’ President Trump about comments, but isn’t confirming he used those words.

Frankly, I don’t care one whit about exactly which words he used. I’m just saying that if he made comments like this, he needlessly caused a mess. It served no positive purpose, and has had a negative effect.

            • Sonny's Mom says:

How could POTUS hold a “closed-door” meeting without a stenographer, court reporter or some other way to verify what was actually said? Becayse we all know exactly how the left operates.

I’m sorry about that mind of yours, LC. Here. I have an extra de-boggle pill. It’s yours. After you have taken it (with or w/o food, by the way) reconsider precisely what I wrote.

            • 2/17 Air Cav says:

LC. If you’ve swallowed that pill, consider the difference between being a diplomat and being diplomatic. Strictly speaking, the POTUS is not a diplomat, the old definition of which was that of an honorable and decent person who is paid to lie on behalf of his country. (Thanks to Wide Load and John “Jungle Stroll w/ Cameraman” Kerry, that is now changed to one who is paid to lie TO his country.)

      • Roh-Dog says:

Quick question, if an asshole is right does that make the truth any more or less relevant?
Follow up, is pointing out the truth make one an asshole?

        • LC says:

If your wife tries on a new dress and asks you, “How do I look?”, and the dress aside, she’s an ugly fucking thing, you probably aren’t going to be served well by the truth. And saying she’s hideous, when there are far better ways to tackle the subject, kind of makes you an asshole, yes.

          • Roh-Dog says:

If telling the woman with whom I waste my time that a a dress isn’t exactly flattering to her ample curves makes me an asshole, good, I’ll be that.
Truth doesn’t have qualifiers or conditions, it just is.
Telling the truth is a form of respect and should be placed above selfishness.
            But what do I know…?

            • LC says:

I notice you focused on the dress when I made it explicitly about her. Nice dodge. Let me be clear – would you tell a woman that she’s ugly as fuck if that’s what you really thought?

Now, I’m sure your wife is a wonderful woman, so you have to use your imagination here.. and it doesn’t even need to be your wife. Make it a kid. A cousin. Sister. Whatever. If you truly go about telling random people, “Hey, sorry, but you’re really fucking ugly, but hey, it’s the truth so no big deal, right?”, then god, you must get beaten up a lot.

              • 2/17 Air Cav says:

                  • LC says:

I’ve been here a lot longer than a year. And I don’t think making the point of, “Don’t insult a bunch of people and expect no blow-back” is that outrageous a notion.

As to Roh-Dog’s stuff, I’m pretty damn sure that most psychologists and other sane people will tell you the mantra is, “If you’ve got nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Not, “If you’ve got nothing nice to say, say it anyway because ‘yay honesty!'”.

                    • MrFace says:

I know you have been here for longer(hence the “or so”) but I don’t know how long. It doesn’t make you any less of a clown. You have the innate ability of basically making your points only the ones to be considered and others points categorically dismissed through arguments not on topic. I don’t know if any one has pointed this out to you yet, but here you go. Free of charge.

To the point of being honest, You can be honest with tact, which what I think you are trying to point out from Roh. However, even without tact, honesty and truthfulness are a must between two parties (countries, marriages, etc.) From your question about dresses and how they make women look, I am honest with my wife, however, tactful. Albeit, when she asks if the dress makes her look fat, I say, no its your ass. And we both laugh because shes knows I am being honest and she knows my sense of humor. So I think that strawman you built there is kind of stupid and not really relevant to the President calling a known destitute country a shithole.

@Instinct – no hes no Lars. He doesn’t incite anger or go off the deep end, from my experience with him(or her, in fact I don’t know. Sorry.)

      • The Other Whitey says:

Be that as it may, LC, Trump is the President because enough of the voters were sick of “business as usual,” kissing everyone’s ass, etc. So *if* he said it, and he may very well not have, he’s doing what he was elected to do.

Is our standing in the world really so diminished by not pretending that some pissant third-world shithole is anything but? They can piss and moan at the UN, but we can also shut off the foreign aid upon which they depend. With that in mind, who has the leverage?

Do I sympathize with the children who endure existing in Haiti? Of course I do. It’s a godawful shithole unfit for human habitation on the best of days. “Banana republic” would constitute a massive improvement. If every government they’ve had in living memory weren’t so corrupt, they could have a much higher standard of living, but nobody in a position of power in that country (when those positions are even occupied) is concerned with improving anything outside their own mansion. Why should anyone kiss their representatives’ asses with bullshit about how they’re supposedly great and mighty and prosperous and so on and so forth?

        • LC says:

Our standing in the world is diminished when other leaders lose respect for us – which they do when we shoot ourselves in the foot like this. If some foreigner calls the US a shithole, people here would probably take offense. That’s pretty much universal. Clinton shot herself in the foot calling half the damn country ‘deplorable’ – and even if she didn’t mean you or me, I still think it was a shitty, stupid thing to do. And, obviously, it had consequences.

It isn’t about foreign aid, or corruption in many parts of the world, or even President Trump. It’s about not being a jackass and saying something stupid that a whole lot of people are going to take personally.

          • MrFace says:

The analogy to Hillary Clintons “deplorables” vice Trumps “Shithole” is probably a better one than the topic with the wife and her choice of clothing.

          • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

The previous administration did little more than kowtow to everyone else while perpetually apologizing while the previous White House Occupant wasn’t bowing to every other Foreign Leader he could. We now have President Trump who isn’t afraid to say what needs to be said and take a stand. Remember how the leftist proglodytes in the media were howling that President Trump was going to get us into war with North Korea? They’re backing down now and seeking talks with the Republic of Korea and that’s just one example. OH, and by the way, let’s NOT forget that it was “Blowjob Willie” Clinton who gave them a bunch of money and material to be able to make nukes!

            • LC says:

Hey, I’ve got my issues with the previous administration too… but we’re talking about something dumb this one did. Just because the previous one did questionable things doesn’t mean we can’t complain about dumb things this one has done, too.

And I’ve been on the record here as saying I think President Trump is better suited for the North Korean issue than Clinton would’ve been, since that almost assuredly would’ve been more appeasement. Not sure what that has to do with Trump making senseless, unhelpful comments that weaken our influence in the world, though.

You can support an administration, or a particular brand of politics, and still admit that sometimes your guy gets things wrong. That’s not heresy, it’s human nature.

        • rgr769 says:

But you have to understand the feelz of the proggies about all those children suffering in third word shithole countries. They think the solution is for everyone there who want to come here should be allowed to do so. Then we can give them benefits and allow them to vote for demoncrats. Their true goal is a single party socialist (code for Marxist) government that controls all aspects of the lives of the people. The Democrat Party has been taken over by rich elitist progtards and that is their true endgame.

          • dusty1 says:

Stifling and silencing debate is the only way the Leftist’s can maintain a balance and a place in the social discourse and try to influence the course of events.
Trump’s only crime is to tell the truth and reflect what many in the western world are thinking.
Saying what needs to be said I would say.

If you don’t know why that is helpful or why the appelation applies you need to consider simply ignoring the first tuesday in Novembers.

        • LC says:

If you want to make a plausible case for how this is a good thing, I’m all ears… and heck, the White House might hire you. If that was the case, don’t you think they’d say it, rather than deny this happened?

Clearly even the White House doesn’t think it’s a positive. But I’m all ears, let’s hear your rationale for why the pros outweigh the cons.

The exact language I and many of you have used to describe these shitholes. My complaint is our ancestors arrived on these shores and wanted to become Americans. In a nutshell, immigrants coming to the U.S> by geographical areas, and the rate in which they are going to be on welfare here in the U.S. or are going to be successful business owners or gainfully employed…

Based on this study, just by the numbers, Trump is RIGHT in his conclusion.

    Native U.S. citizens – 30%
Central America and Mexico – 73% (Really, no shit?)
Caribbean – 51% (Well you beat Mexico et al)
Africa – 48% (Well you beat the other two but not by much)
South America – 41% (Yeah ok Mexico Jr. etc)
East Asia – 32% (And here we go, numbers dropping dramatically)
Europe – 26% (Yeah, you are kicking most everyone’s asses)
South Asia – 17% (Yeah, here my not shocked face. )

So the numbers bear it out and, gee, you know what, Trump the Business Man probably saw this as well and called everyone on it and they shit their pants.

Presuming that Trump did use the term shit-hole, it’s nothing more than locker room talk with no intention to demean or impugn. Guys say that kind of stuff to one another all the time though they would generally choose better phrasing if they were writing it down.

When William Donald Schaffer was Governor of Maryland…

“He’d say things that would get any other politician branded racist, sexist, homophobic and just plain evil … and his constituents would just smile and say to themselves, “That’s our Governor.” (They would say “Governor” mentally to themselves long after he left that office to serve as state comptroller, by the way.)

I don’t think he’d been governor for ten minutes when he said, within hearing of a reporter, that the Eastern Shore of Maryland was a “shithole.” (It is a shithole, by the way.)

Most politicians would have their staffs spinning apologies and “clarifications” for about three news cycles after a “gaffe” like that. Schaefer dealt with it by simply treating it as if it wasn’t a gaffe … because, basically, it wasn’t. It was his opinion, and fuck you if you didn’t like it.”

Now as to whether the POTUS ought to be making such statements – I’m more ambivalent about that. On the one hand, the person occupying the highest political office in the land ought to be more circumspect about the way he talks.

Being diplomatic is part of the job and antagonizing people unnecessarily is just stupid – one of these days you’re going to antagonize someone whose support you need.

On the other hand, it’s not like the lefties, the press and the other usual haters are going to hate Trump any MORE than they already do.

This was the danger of going “full Potato” in their frothing-at-the-mouth hatred of Trump: Once you go all the way, you’ve shot your bolt and there’s nowhere else you can go, which pretty much gives Trump a free pass to continue pissing you off.

Literally, there were what looked like medians in the middle of the streets, made of garbage.

And the flies – the flies in Haiti were enormous, some of them probably with wingspans of more than an inch. And of course, no picture can capture the smell…

Now once you got outside of the cities, it was a lot better, but still desperately poor.

Haiti has been a republic since 1804 after a slave uprising kicked out the French. They were the second republic in the hemisphere. Their first leader was Emperor for Life Dessalines who ordered that the remaining white people on the island be massacred. He was assassinated in 1806. The revolution caused mass migration to New Orleans which has yet to end.

Haiti pretty much supplies slave labor for Dominican Sugar Plantations AND it’s a deforested shithole while the Dominican Republic also provides us with choice cigars. 21. HT3 '83-'87 says:

Personally, I think referring to Haiti is a ‘shithole’ is wrong, terrible wrong!

It gives ‘shitholes’ a bad name when they are at the same level as Haiti. Hell, the Haitians should hope one day to attain the level of ‘shithole’ instead of their current status as ‘Diseased Colon of the Universe’. Just one turd chaser’s opinion.

  22. 11B-Mailclerk says:

Hopefully, this latest leak teaches Mr. Trump that his opponents and detractors are no more trustworthy that a constipated Copperhead. (Either party)

A leak like that, accurate or “enhanced”, is -exactly- the sort of thing that would be done by a hostile foreign power with a bug or spy in place. In other words, the leaker is aiding a hostile foreign power. Or all of them, doesn’t matter. And they apparently have no hesitation or regret, whatsoever, that their “get Trump” is damaging to the USA, immediately and directly.

And when -this- one doesn’t really work, they will certainly escalate, consequences be damned.

Sooner or later, someone is going to tee-up something so outrageously actionable that a recent law school graduate could get a conviction from a jury of professional skeptics. And when -that- hammer drops, the wheels come -off-.

  35. Perry Gaskill says:

News media stories about Trump’s “shithole” comment, whether he said it or not, seem to have multiple problems.

In the first place, what goes on in the Oval Office in a private meeting should be allowed to stay in the Oval Office. If you take away the ability of a chief executive to be candid, particularly in what amounts to a default off-the-record session, you’re potentially affecting his ability to make decisions.

Too, the news media has once again shown itself to be feckless in its refusal to identify sources. To some extent anonymity is now the norm instead of the exception. What’s also very likely is that the sources leaking “shithole” gossip aren’t doing it for the good of the country, they’re doing it to appear as savvy political insiders within a small unaccountable circle.

What also seems to have gotten lost in all the potty-mouth hysteria is the original subject under discussion. What Trump was talking about was the idea that merit-based immigration might be a better alternative to what’s in place now. He wasn’t being particularly racist or xenophobic. His argument has been that it might be time to start doing what is best for our own country instead of focusing on what’s best for some other wretched part of the world. Particularly when those other grim places often show no inclination to improve things on their own.

    • OWB says:

Exactly. Among the things that offend me about the left is their apparent requirement that I become a racist. What else could they mean when they expect those of us who do not consider the ethnicity of a population prior to discussing a country to contemplate the skin color of occupants of that country? They seem to demand that I practice some sort of different behavior depending upon the skin color of a country’s population.

      Maybe not.

    • LC says:

      I recommend decaf, Thunder.

See? Nothing in there about communism because, shockingly, I’m anti-communist too. Nothing in there even arguing whether or not these places are shitholes, either. Just pointing out that making these comments had a negative effect on our policy and position in the world.

If someone has a compelling argument that irritating the world at large and having fellow Republicans disavow these comments helps us as a country, I’m all ears.

  43. Stephen McCartney says:

If you visit these places, and there are hundreds if not thousands of them…they ARE shitholes. Nothing wrong with the people as it is usually 95% due to political crooks, toxic tribal BS that goes back years OR just a failed state who does not produce OR KEEP it’s intelligentsia. They all try, hopefully successfully via a legal route come to USA, or the west. Who wants to see their kids suffer with disease, worms from bad food or the fear of kidnapping for ransom? Afghanistan is a TOTAL SHITHOLE, but the ‘racist’ America still sends it best and brightest there to help improve life for backward pedophilic, abusive ( e.g.female) Pashtuns. Not the sign of a POTUS who is a racist. AND our best and brightest give their lives doing the job. So..let the chattering class talk but we ALL know what a shithole is and I am glad POTUS spoke his mind. CAPT Bones USN (ret)

  44. Reddevil says:

For the record, I spent about 8 months in Port au Prince. I’ve done mounted patrols all over the counties, and foot patrols in Cite Sole, day and night. I can reliably report that it is a shithole. Cite Sole at night reminded me of a post apocalyptic movie like Mad Max or A Boy and his Dog.

I tried but failed to post a picture of a slim young RedDevil, fighting weight 200 pounds before battle rattle and radio, walking over the 2×4 that served as the bridge over the ‘sewer’ aka ‘middle of the street’. Next to me you can see a pig wallowing in human excrement. The whole time I’m thinking ‘if this breaks or I lose my balance, it’s Hepatitis or worse’…

I’m sure it’s worse after the earthquake.

Why it’s a shithole and what to do about it are two very different questions. The question here is whether or not Trump should have called Haiti a shithole in a policy meeting with a group of Congressional leaders.

The answer, obviously, is of course not. It was a stupid thing to do. Kind of like Gonsalves calling a Congressional staffer ‘sweetheart’. It’s just a needlessly stupid thing to do, and he should know better.

Everyone in that room knew that Haiti is a shithole, and understood immediately what Trump was trying to say: it doesn’t help us or the shithole country if we let everyone from there migrate here.

However, all of them also understood this: you can’t really say shit like that out loud if your in public office- it makes you look ignorant at best and racist at worst. There are other ways to make that point- but eloquence is not one of Trump’s talents.

I don’t think Trump is a racist- he’s just a rich white guy who hasn’t been accountable to anyone since he was about 25 years old. He says what he thinks- and a lot of people agree with him on this. I don’t even think this comment was racist per se, it’s more of an insensitive but effective way to make a point.

The problem is that now he is accountable to a lot of people, and they are looking for things to be pissed about. On top of that, his inner circle can’t keep anything quiet- if you believe Wolff’s Book, Trump himself is the worst of the bunch.

There is no such thing as a ‘private’ meeting in public office. Everything you say is subject to scrutiny.

Trumps tragic flaw is that the very thing that got him elected- speaking his mind- could well be his downfall. The timing is bad, as well, because it seems to confirm the narrative about his fitness.

  45. HMCS(FMF) ret says:

I’m guessing that the “liberal elite” have NEVER called countries “shitholes” or used other derogatory terms for foreigners before.

And if you believe that, there’s a monkey flying out of my ass as I type this…

    • Reddevil says:

They probably have- but not when they were serving as president and in front of a bunch of witnesses during an open policy meeting.

It’s not so much what he said as it is the context, both in terms of a policy meeting and the current discussion about his competence.

Again, a needlessly stupid thing to say. Lots of ways for it to hurt him, his agenda, and the country, and no way that it would help anything except his popularity with his base, who likes him no matter what.

      • Perry Gaskill says:

Reddevil, we disagree on whether the Oval Office constitutes an “open policy meeting.” Also whether “There is no such thing as a ‘private’ meeting in public office. Everything you say is subject to scrutiny.”

Most of what I’m familiar with when it comes to government meetings involves either California’s Brown Act or Bagley-Keene. Although those are state specific, the feds have similar rules. What went on in the “shithole” meeting would probably be considered a work session, and not a formal public meeting per se. Consider the following scenario:

Senator Dorkwhistle and Senator Nerdflute meet for lunch at a tony Washington restaurant to discuss the environmental issue of whether Wily E. Coyote should be allowed to ambush The Roadrunner using high explosives. Dorkwhistle, a dedicated bird watcher, is opposed to such a practice and thinks it should be limited to specific ambush areas only during certain seasons. Nerdflute supports limited use of anti-Roadrunner IEDs; his view is they might be restricted to only those times when the feathered speedster has sounded that annoying “BEEP-BEEP!” three consecutive times in close succession.

Levity aside, if the senators discuss such an issue, and come to a non-binding consensual compromise somewhere between the salad and the main course, does such a process amount to a public meeting?

It might also be pointed out that what the specific rules say, and what actually goes on are two separate things. If open meeting laws were strictly enforced all the time, the wheels of government would probably grind to a halt.

        • Reddevil says:

I mean it in the sense that the only way for three people to keep a secret is for one. Guy to to kill the other two (an old HUMINTER told me that once).

In these settings, someone will have an agenda they feel is more important than the president or even the nation, and use what they learn to their advantage.

People who are used to working in this setting are very careful about what they say in a group setting.

The Washington Post’s anonymous sources (who, by the way, weren’t at the meeting when the comment was supposedly made)….

Now, if these loud-mouthed whiners were NOT there, and we have no names named by the WAPO, then the entire thing is made up out of whole cloth to sell the newspaper, which has gone from being relevant to nearly obscure and definitely useless as a source of news.

Personally, I’d roust that incompetent lawyer in a jail cell in Virginia out of his daze and tell him to sue them for fabricating the whole thing. They think they’re still in the Days of Deep Throat and that somehow, they can unseat Pres. Trump the way Tricky Dick got fired.

Well, they have nothing. NADA. ZIP. ZERO.

The whole thing is pure BS, and they know it.

Just because they hate him in the most in coherent mindless screaming way, it doesn’t mean they’re right, or that they’re doing anything except creating fiction.

I would not be surprised to find that Huffington herself is behind this tempest in a teapot. She needs her ass kicked, but good. She’s no Kathryn Graham.
