Detroit’s tin cup

| December 5, 2012

Old Trooper sends us a link to a Detroit Fox News report that a council woman, JoAnn Watson, says that since the city pulled the lever for President Obama (75% of Detroit voters voted for Obama), he should bail them out before they go over their own fiscal cliff the end of this year;

“Our people in an overwhelming way supported the re-election of this president and there ought to be a quid pro quo and you ought to exercise leadership on that,” said Watson. “Of course, not just that, but why not?”

Fox 2 News Headlines

Yeah, I might be a little more sympathetic, but JoAnn Watson is property tax cheat and probably one of the reasons that Detroit is in debt;

A Detroit City Council member paid only $68 in property taxes this year because city records showed her home doesn’t exist.

JoAnn Watson, 58, said she was unaware of a city records discrepancy that has, for the past decade, listed her house as an empty lot even though the brick Tudor-style home has been occupying the plot since 1926, according to a story Sunday in the Detroit Free Press.

Watson said she receives her property-tax bill separate from her mortgage bill and never questioned why her taxes dropped – or why they didn’t increase when she repaired her home after a tornado.

She said she noticed the drop in her property-tax bill, which she handles herself, but assumed it was because the tornado left a hole in her roof and damaged the home’s foundation.

So, basically, she won’t pay for her responsibilities, but the rest of us should.

What? There aren’t any Skittle-shitting ponies? You still have to worry about paying your gas bill and your mortgage?

    Who knew?

  2. Stu says:

Is anyone really surprised? Didn’t we all really know that it was gonna be this way, but it was never pubicly stated?

It’s been said, so let the money start flowing, the bailing out of bankrupt states, counties, and cities begin. (All on the backs of the responsible states of course)

You all know where this train is going, question is will you get on the boxcar?

“So basically she won’t pay for her responsibilities, but the rest of us should.”

    Leftism distilled to its essence.

Come on do you expect any better from a city and a council who supported Kwame Kilpatrick.

  6. bullnav says:

    What BU3 said…

The Governor has offered different measures of assistance to the city, and all were turned down by the city council. It is unfortunate that this is business as usual for the Detroit city council and that this is not surprising at all. One more reason why I almost never go to the D even though I live right outside Ann Arbor…

I always ask people who want others to pay taxes if they have utilized the gift line on their tax form. If they haven’t put their money where their mouth is; I don’t want to hear how the “rich” should have to pay their fair share. I want to keep my money for my family and I don’t fault the rich for wanting to do the same.

    What #4, #5 and #6 said.
Detroit is the millstone that hangs around the necks of the rest of us.
Especially the point that solutions have been offered to Detroit, they just want a free ride. This is, indeed, liberalism distilled down to it’s essence.

  9. PintoNag says:

And to think of what Detroit once was.

    How the mighty have fallen.

And the current occupants have no idea why, either. That’s the sad part of all this.

Wake up, Enjoy and welcome to the Obama generation

The essence of absolute power corrupting absolutely. They know what they’re doing isn’t working, won’t work, but in the interests of preserving their hold on their little bit of power, they’re not about to change.

IOW, they know they’re about to hit the wall, but they’ve got the steering wheel and the gas pedal, and by God, they aren’t giving them up without a fight.

  14. Tom Huxton says:

Detroit did this to itself through “Urban Renewal” projects. They tore down so many buildings that some blocks have no houses, yet they left the streets to be serviced by snowplows, water service and other utilities. Costs remain without the population to offset costs. The best current proposal is to return the land to farm use. Industry has better places to locate. Anyone with sense left 20 years ago.

Lawmaker Takes ‘Dissolve Detroit’ Plan To National Media
It would no doubt be controversial, but the idea of dissolving the city of Detroit and absorbing it into Wayne County is being tossed around in …

As someone living closer to Detroit than he’s like………

    Burn it with fire, please.

FYI there was a proposition on the ballot here in November giving the state government more authority and a faster option to remove control from failed cities in order to stop the bleeding. It was voted down.

  17. 2-17 Air Cav says:

She thought her property taxes were all but nil because of a hole in her roof, even though there nearly nil before there was a hole? Makes sense to me.

  18. Just Plain Jason says:

I love this video…it is Obama singing the praises of Kwame Kilpatrick I wonder if he ever partied at the mansion.

  19. USMCE8Ret says:

Before his term is up, I’ll bet the city gets bailed out. With that said, I need to go get my Obama-phone and other free stuff while it lasts. (sarc)

    Just sickening.

  20. hoosierbeagle says:

Detriot has been run like a 3rd world nation since the 70’s. Any fed money sent there will disappear into the pockets of the ones in charge.

  21. 2-17 Air Cav says:

The Dems have been working over the past several years (and still are working hard) to effectively force a middle class return to the dead and dying cities. Inducements haven’t worked to the desired extent so coercion is all they have.

  22. NHSparky says:

To put it into another perspective, she pays less in property taxes in one year than I do in one WEEK.

No, that is not a typo. And she still has enough left over to take her and her husband…okay, just her…to Olive Garden for dinner before she hits my weekly property tax bill.

  23. 2-17 Air Cav says:

Sparky. Did you see her pic? I think she’s less an Olive Gardener and more of All-You-Can-Eat buffetress.

  24. NHSparky says:

Which is why I dropped her husband from the bill. I’ll go one further…my “huge” veteran tax break from my town would pay her tax bill for three years. It is a three percent cut in my bill.

  25. Stacy0311 says:

  27. Medic09 says:

The rationale to why Mr. Obama was elected, right there. In simpler terms: “we elected Obama because we expected him to hand out large amounts of free money. Now we want ours. That’s the reason we voted him in.”

  28. Jimbo says:

Yous all b’ so mean! It’s all fo’ deh chill’uns.

  29. O-4E says:

Being from the area and having worked in the city for a while…

The only thing that seperates Detroit from Mogadishu is the geographic location and some pretty decent Coney Islands

    That is about it

  30. Hmmm, what was I saying before that people will not learn financial lessons if they are not held accountable for their actions? That applies here. These idiots in Detroit have learned the lesson that they do not have to be financially responsible, because they are entitled to everyone else’s money to bail them out. Pathetic.

  31. And what do we expect from a community which believes that Obama just gives away his Obama munnee from his stash in the White House…

  32. Scubasteve says:

#28, Jimbo, Was that for the “Chill’uns”, or for the “Chit’lins”?
