Daniel Matthews; phony combat sniper

Matthews vest

The good folks at Military Phony send us their work on this Daniel Matthews fellow who put his DD214 on his motorcycle sidecar;

He told his story to a local journalist once, too;

Sniper story

Matthews, who splits time between Pembroke and Phoenix, was a sniper, an elite sniper. He served in the Marine Corps on a “recluse” mission.

A young man named XXX was assigned as his spotter.

On XXX third outing with Matthews, they were on a mission and XXX was working hard to do a good job. At one point, Matthews told him he needed to get his head down. He kept spotting. He didn’t move fast enough.

“I inhaled bits of his brain,” Matthews said.

He then added, “but I killed the other sniper.”

Two days later, on another mission, he killed an enemy three-star general.

But to this day, Matthews said, he still struggles with the memories of his time in Southeast Asia.

When I showed him the picture I took of him touching Peter’s name, he said, “I can never touch the real Wall.”

Conversations with him are useless, because he has a “bunch of DD214s, but they get updated as time goes on” because he thinks he still goes out on secret missions, or “black ops”.

Matthews claims3

Yeah, well, he was in the Marines from 1971 – 1975. He was a motor vehicle operator and never left the continental United States;

Then he joined the National Guard for 15 years;

Daniel Matthews Actual FOIA

He was a 68M, which looks like it was an Aircraft Weapons System repairman in the 1980s (it became a Nutritional Care Specialist recently). For some reason in his final days, they made him a cook in an aviation unit for a brief period, for whatever reason. But not a sniper and no deployments. His DD214 on his sidecar covers every place someone fired shots in anger during his career – but he wasn’t in any of those places.

Matthews Army Assignments

Matthews Army Awards

Matthews Army education

He does have two National Defense Service Medals, though, so he might be legit.

TWO NDSM’s? Hey, they don’t hand those out like Shriners throwing candy at parades, or do they? 15 years and E5? Barely over mediocre in my book. I wonder how many pounds of bling he sports on his bike vest? Another booger-eating wonder.

    • Hondo says:

His later career was in the ARNG, API. Some units there have very few opportunities for promotion due to people “homesteading” in unit billets. That was particularly true prior to the 1st Gulf War; many ARNG units were reputedly run then more as social clubs than military units.

Not defending the guy – he’d have never been able to do that in the RA due to retention control points for E5, and he’s obviously a LSoS. But what he did is eminently do-able in the ARNG.

      • Twist says:

Yes it is possible. When I was in the ARNG in 1992 my unit had an E5 that was a Vietnam Vet. I’ve known the guy pretty much my entire life since he was my friend’s father so I knew he wasn’t a shitbag.

      • JimV says:

Back in the 1980’s, I was training a unit in the Texas Army National Guard. They had one soldier (E-5) that looked old enough to be my Dad. I later discovered that he had been in WWII and worked as General Patton switchboard operator!

He had a break in service between AD and the National Guard. His fellow guardsmen would call him “Pappy.”

      • AZtoVA says:

It’s also conceivable that he would be moved to a low-priority billet near the end of his career to make room for a promotable E4. This in turn would free up the E1-E4 position which would be required for a “new hire” to get either an enlistment bonus or an AC guy to come in on an affiliation bonus. Can’t get a bonus (legally) if you’re double-slotted.

    • Skippy says:

Many in the NG prior to 2001 where 15 year E-4 and 20 year E-5 in fact in the 96-99 time frame was when house cleaning started and as Hondo says below the social club got shut down

  2. Ncat says:

I once went on a “recluse” mission at Ft Drum. My sole aim was to avoid being bitten by a recluse spider. They were said to be everywhere.

  3. LiRight says:

I have no words to adequately describe how these dickheads turn my stomach.

I’ll bet you $1 that this scum will never remove the lettering from his MC sidecar.

    Black Ops?? Jeeze….

    • Hack Stone says:

    • BFV Mikegolf says:

He’ll do something since it has been pointed out that Colombia and Lebanon are misspelled. It is Falkland Islands not island, which was a war between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The US was not a participant.

  4. Combat Historian says:

He attended PNCOC and received the NCOPDR, so he was a trained killer and carried out KILL missions in the ARNG…///

    • Claw says:

Yeah, nothing better than being a trained sniper/killer with a Marksman Qualification Badge issued in 1982 and a Army Lapel Button as a retirement award.

      • Hondo says:

He does seem to have 2 AAMs, Claw. One of those might have been his retirement award.

Sidebar: knew a guy once who claimed to have gotten an AAM for a retirement award – at his request. As he told the story, he retired not long after the AAM came out and didn’t have one. So he requested one for a retirement award, and his unit obliged.

Anyway, that was his story. Dunno if it was true or not; I wasn’t in his unit when he retired, so I can’t say for sure.

        • Claw says:

Yep, I saw the two AAMs.

Just wanted to put a little zinger in there about the ALB as a going away present./smile

        • Twist says:

Did that guy retire out of Camp Atterbury in the 2013-2014 timeframe? If he did I can tell you that it wasn’t because of a request. The guy I’m talking about retired as an E6 and got an AAM as a retirement award because he was flagged.

          • Hondo says:

Not the same guy, Twist. The guy I was talking about retired in the 1980s – I want to say 1982 or 1983 – not terribly long after the AAM was created.

        • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

On my tour in Kuwait I had about the best damned Right Hand Man I could ask for and he WANTED an AAM for an End of Tour Award when nearly everyone was getting an ARCOM. I asked him why and he told me he already had two ARCOMS and wanted an AAM to “fatten up his fruit salad”, he worked his ass off for me on that tour so I obliged him. I got to pin his E5 on him during that and he turned out to be one helluva NCO as well.

        • Chip says:

Funny how the Army works. I spent most of my time on the Advance party team(as a artilleryman) and a fraction of my time as a driver. I received a AAM for driver. That being said we had a lot of good guys not receive anything and that was wrong. I think maybe a third of us received AAMs.

  5. OldManchu says:

He has one extra O in the name on his sidecar.

    • Hondo says:

Yep. But one of the synonyms beginning with “P” vice “B” is IMO much more apropos.

  6. Daisy Cutter says:

I used to know ‘Boner’. He always rose to the occasion.

  7. SKYJUMPER says:

What a fuckin’ gay blade he is in this picture!
    (No disrespect to blades)

    • HMCS(FMF) ret. says:

I bet his favorite hangout is “The Blue Oyster”, home of the World-famous Salad Tossing Bar!!!

    • lily says:

He was probably in the middle of singing “Y-M-C-A”!

    • jarhead says:

Sky, have to agree with you after looking at the link you mentioned. Kinda looks like he shaved the chest hairs right down the middle so he could leave his shirt open at the top and show some cleavage to some other Village People type. He makes Village People types look straight.

  8. Bobo says:

If it were me, I would have gotten the spelling of the places to which I’ve been deployed off of my DD-214 before I had them painted on my motorcycle, since the personnel clerks get that little squiggly red line under the misspellings. That would make sure that places like Lebanon and Colombia are spelled correctly. Of course, one would need a DD-214 that actually listed those places for it to work.

    • Hack Stone says:

He meant that he was in Lebanon Pennsylvania and Columbia Maryland.

Falkland Island (sic)? Seriously? No one bothered to wave the bullshit flag on that one? And his Facebook page says “Former Sniper at Marine Corps Recruiting”. I guess if Mom and Dad refused to sign the Parental Consent Form, he would tae them out from 800 yards with extreme prejudice.

  9. OIF '06-'07-'08 says:

Why the hell are all these posers a walking/rolling billboard for all of their fine phonery?

    • 26Limabeans says:

Its a compulsive disorder. They can’t stop collecting the bling and have to make up a story to go with each new piece. I’ll bet he is well compensated for it. Where else would a retard like that get the bucks for the custom Harley, new truck, top shelf snowblower etc.?

  10. Thunderstixx says:

Why the hell do these idiots have to wreck a perfectly honorable career and a great Harley Davidson motorcycle with their ration of bull shit…
Somebody take that bike away from his ugly lyin’ ass, he doesn’t deserve to have one…

  11. Bobo says:

15 years in the ARNG and promoted once. That is a stellar career.

When I was in the ARNG, we occasionally moved guys to the MKT. They were the ones who couldn’t hang with the line units anymore.

  12. BFV MIkegolf says:

On the bike sidecar “Falkland Island.” Considering that The Falkland Islands was between Argentina and the United Kingdom, and the US was not a participant (US did provide equipment support to the UK) that is quite the accomplishment! Sarcasm intended

    • Hack Stone says:

It was a hell of a shot, but he put lead on target from thousands of miles away.

    • HMCS(FMF) ret. says:

He probably claims that because he was the pivot man in a joint Argentinian / UK circle jerk.

      • Hack Stone says:

Those sheep weren’t going to fuck themselves. Daniel Matthews was willing to do what no other man could or would do.

  13. CWORet says:

Aaaand his marksmanship badges are reversed. Must be legit. Semper fuckyou douchebag.

    • USMCMSgt (Ret) says:

The look right to him when he looks down.

The newspaper article says his “spotter’s” name was removed because that person couldn’t be verified. He goes on to say the only thing he could remember for sure was “his name was Petey”.

A sniper, huh? What kind of person doesn’t remember the name of someone who was killed right next to you? (Beyond that, what kind of sniper would be in a position for another sniper to kill your spotter in the first place?)

This guy is such a piece of shit.

He can’t even get his facts straight on his FB page. He claims to be in high school (Class of ’73) in Corfu, NY but his pg. 3 indicates he was at Henderson Hall at the time.

  14. USMC8151 says:

I noted that he was an 8151 Marine Security Guard. So was I, but he never deployed outside of CONUS???? Odd, that mos is/was reserved for embassy guards….he trained at Henderson Hall hmmmm

    • USMC8151 says:

On a second pass seems he did not complete MSG school and became a lotus or truck driver, this is a weird record….Al

    • HMCS(FMF) ret. says:

He’s wearing a Marine Corps Military Police badge on his vest

  15. Old 1SG, US Army (retired) says:

    Booner is a real Boner…

    Falklands? Come on, really?

Yep, we always imbed our recluse secret squirrel killer elites into truck driver MOSs… When the have 10000 confirmed sniper kills we promote them to under cover aviation maintainers and part time spoons…

This guy is giving all the truck driver, wrench turners and cooks a bad name…

This dipstick needs to be slapped…

  16. Hack Stone says:

He looks like he spent all of his time while stationed at Henderson Hall at Freddies Beach Bar in Crystal City.

  17. ex-OS2 says:

  18. HMCS(FMF) ret. says:

I wonder if he’s a member of a military MC that “vets” (like Phildo’s club), or a real military MC? I’m sure a few members would not be real happy with him if he’s bullshitted them with his lies – that sidecar maybe the first “target of opportunity”, IYKWIM…

  19. 2/17 Air Cav says:

Excuse me, Mr. Tough Biker Guy. Do you have any idea just how many Veterans are laughing at you and your clown wagon?

  20. MCPO NYC USN Ret. ain't goin' no where says:

With horns on your helmet, one becomes immediately LEGIT!

  21. IDC SARC says:

  22. Chip says:

Is he wearing a thong in that first pic?

  23. Sparks says:

They made him an aviation cook because they knew he was a blue waffle.

  24. Green Thumb says:

    Oh. My. God!

    This dude takes the cake.

Riley Keith “The Big Turd” Keeton does not have shot on this assclown.

I do not even know what to say. Even an insult would expend to much energy on this loser.

Phildo and the boys ride again!

  25. RM3(SS) says:

Ever notice that these full of shit phonies always give themselves a “badass” nickname? WTF is a Booner? A boner with an extra hole?
Well from now on I want to be referred as “mayhem”. Maybe I’ll get it on a leather vest and move to Florida. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

    • Claw says:

I’m thinking Boonies + Sniper: shortened to Booner.

Should be more like Boonies + Gerly-Man: shortened to Booger.

  26. 20thEB67 says:

    Daniel Matthews; phony combat sniper:

You are a fucking disgrace. Plain and simple.
Enjoy your new-found internet fame you pos. It will be forever.

Google hit-Daniel Matthews; phony combat sniper

  27. Perry Gaskill says:

An additional aspect to this is that the news story from 2010 was written by Howard Owens at The Batavian at a time when the Vietnam Memorial was on tour. Owens has a generally good reputation as a hard-working journalist from the old school; without The Batavian, it’s unlikely the upstate New York town would any source of local news.

So here comes Matthews with a bullshit story about being a “recluse” sniper, whatever that is, and it’s like he’s extending a rancid middle finger to not only The Batavian, but also everyone else in town. And the next time somebody like Howard Owens wants to pay tribute to the veteran community, he’s going to think twice about it to avoid getting burned by some liar on a tricycle.

    • NormanS says:

Isn’t a “recluse sniper” the guy who shoots the testicles off of brown recluse spiders a 1,000 meters?

  28. Skippy says:

Turd enjoy your google fame !!!!!

  29. Ex-PH2 says:

Could this jackass just wear a shirt? No one wants to look at his pit hair. Geezo Pete!

    • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

And what gesture is he making? It looks like something out of a Village People music video!

  30. RM3(SS) says:

Googled his name. To make all this worse, he disgraces and dishonors a posthumous MOH holder with the same name.
This clown is an extra wide load of turd. Someone in NY please flush.

  31. jarhead says:

Don’t know where to start, other than Monday some contacts in the Nashville area will hopefully bring the Lawson POSER to his knees.

Too many names come to mind that will be so pissed off at this clown, too many to list. Booner..WTH?? Maybe it means Boonies (former visitor) with Erectile Rysfuntion. Why else would the rider’s face be covered with white out? Afraid someone might see it and recognize a woman who needs a man, rather than a lying B. S artist with stories all of us know are complete con? Especially a lying P O S with Boonies Erectile Rysfunction? B E R…now give that credit to the big mouth POSER.

On a side note, the Mrs and I were headed back home from a visit to Franklin, N. C this afternoon. Now we all know how many candy ass POSERS have to wear the biker gear with all the patches. We were headed South on 185, when a dude on a bike, followed by a woman on a LARGE trike behind him passes us. Loaded to the hilt with biker vests and PLENTY of patches. In a BIG symbol on the back of his vest it said, Combat Vets Association Hers read the same with an addition of “Combat Vets Association Auxiliary”. They took exit 12, about two miles prior to exit 10, which is the Phenex City, Al. exit. BTW, anybody who has been to Ft. Benning knows that is the correct spelling of Phenix. My question is obvious..are these people for real? Anybody ever heard of them? If it is a legitimate group, does anyone know if they vett members? Seems like so damned many posers want to belong to a biker organization. Do they think if they are a good enough bluffer to worm their way in, they will never have to answer? Biker and Poser are too often connected. This Matthews dude and multitudes of others like him make all bikers suspect. For that matter, all the phonies make me want to stay as far as possible away from groups or events honoring veterans. Just too damned easy for wannabees to weasel their way to the top of the heap.

    • jarhead says:

Shoulda, woulda, coulda checked with Wikipedia before asking. Yes there is an organization by that name which requires a copy of a D D 214 before joining. Accordingly, they do a good service to society.

  32. QMC says:

I bet he tosses a mean salad

  33. FatCircles0311 says:

    POG phony ass bitch.

I have a feeling he’s no double expert either.

  34. Hack Stone says:

According to his FaceBook page, which is still up as of this morning, he just got married on July 16. You just know that he had a military themed wedding. He looks like the type of guy that passes bad checks all over the county.

  35. FAEX says:

Who gets out with 19 yrs 5 mos total service, 7 mos short of being eligible for non-regular retirement? Must have been a total shitbag.

    • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

He must have done something like urinating in a General’s Wife’s flowerbed or poking her poodle!

    • Skippy says:

He did most of his time in the guard. Probably not enough time on the books for retirement

    • MrBill says:

It looks like he managed to retire. At the Military Phony site we see a photo of his apparently genuine blue retired military ID card. There’s an entry on his 2-1 that reflects almost 2 years of USMC reserve time, which isn’t shown on the main FOIA page. So he probably did manage to get his 20.

      • USMCMSgt (Ret) says:

        That’s what I was thinking.

If I’m not mistaken, he’d be eligible for retired pay once he reached 62.

Unless he were medically retired, it seems to me he would have to reach 20 years to rate that blue retirement I.D. card.

  36. HMCS(FMF) ret. says:

Assclown is a sooper sekrit turd burglar that works manholes…

  37. Green Thumb says:

I bet this clown has been “Boonered” a few times.

    • Green Thumb says:

Also, I bet that person on the back of the bike is GLAD their face was cut out.

TAH may be getting a thank you note on this one.

      Imagine the embarrassment.

  38. Mick says:

After looking closely at his USMC records that are posted above, he was in Marine Security Guard (the Marines that guard embassies) training from 08-18 January 1973, then it looks like they shit-canned him from the course and sent him over to Headquarters Marine Corps to perform admin duties. It’d be interesting to find out what kind of shit he was getting up to that got him bounced out of MSG school.

  39. Kilo3/7 says:

Facebook page taken down, imagine that.

  40. Green Thumb says:

    His beard is not gray.

On closer inspection, it appears to be dried semen.

That would make sense being that he rides with Phildo.

    Just saying…
