Richard Davis; phony Green Beret, phony POW

| May 4, 2017

The folks at Green Beret Posers Exposed share their work on this fellow Richard Davis who claims to be a Special Forces veteran of Vietnam and he claims that he was a POW for 68 days in the Hanoi Hilton until he escaped.

He was a prisoner, but only because he deserted from the Army twice;

GBPE interviews him by phone and he never even bothered to do the basic research to be a believable phony. He claims that he can’t remember anything because of a stroke and that his records were destroyed in the 1973 fire.

Enjoy the 38 minute interview;

  1. Green Thumb says:

Where do this people keep coming from?

Maybe someone needs to put the rock back where they found it.

    • Hayabusa says:

There does seem to be an unending supply of them, doesn’t there?

And they just keep getting stupider.

    • NormanS says:

Would that be the rock I kept finding under my sleeping bag, under the oak trees on the FTXes at Camp Bob? Sorry, I kept moving it because it hurt my back.

  2. Graybeard says:

    Deserted 2x?

Records gone in “the fire” – Check

    Beret – Check

  4. 2/17 Air Cav says:

He certainly likes attention, doesn’t he? Well, he’s got it now. Knucklehead.

  5. O-4E says:

How did he get a CIB never having been Infantry?

    • Jonn Lilyea says:

I think he pencil-whipped his records before he got out, but there’s no proof of that, so….

      • Martinjmpr says:

I wonder if it could have been a clerical error somewhere along the line.

It’s easy for me to imagine just from my own experiences that were long after Vietnam when this stuff was automated and computerized.

Envision this: An outprocessing office somewhere in the RVN – probably a temporary wooden building with screens instead of glass windows, fans running all the time, filled with a bunch of bored GIs at the end of their tour.

It’s a noisy place: People talking, typewriters clacking away, trucks driving around outside, maybe VN street traffic, horns blaring, aircraft flying overhead – the usual noise and confusion of a busy military office.

The PFC or SP/4 clerk typist, Snuffy, is at his desk and there is a queue of GI’s standing in line, coming up to the desk one at a time. The clerk is overworked and doing things half-assed – maybe it’s near the end of the day and he wants to go out and get drunk with his buddies that night or maybe he’s got guard duty or CQ and he he has to hurry up and finish.

Maybe Snuffy is near the end of his tour and he’s day dreaming about the day HE gets to outprocess and go home. Or maybe he just got there and he’s still trying to figure out how to do his job.

Maybe the 5 guys in front of our hero Davis were all 11b Infantrymen and when PFC Snuffy was typing up their records he dutifully put the CIB in there along with the other handful of RVN medals that everyone got when they outprocessed.

Being in a hurry, Snuffy types the CIB onto Davis’ awards list, too, by minstake, then hands it to Davis and says “does this look right?” Davis shrugs and says “sure.”. Snuffy finishes typing, hands Davis his records packet and tells him to move on to the next station.

I could see that happening. I could also see it happening later in Davis’ career when he is in or out processing and tells the clerk “oh, I was in ‘Nam and rated the CIB but they forgot to put it in file” so his clerk buddy hooks him up

The bottom line being that in that day and age I’ll bet that happened more than a few times (and I’ll bet the opposite happened, too: Guys who genuinely rated a CIB but because of a lazy/sloppy clerk it never got put on their records.)

        • Uh1av8r says:

It does happen I was awarded a Good Conduct Medal as a captain when I demobed from iraq

    • Cacti35 says:

How did he get a CIB? Well it was like this. My unit was in heavy contact with an NVA Division in the Quang Ngai Province. We were decimated, down to just me (the RTO) and the 1st Platoon leader. Lt. advised me to radio for re-inforcements, even tell them to send the supply clerks out on the next available chopper. The rest is history.

      • JBUSMC says:

You still have to have an infantry mos right?

        • Hondo says:

Normally, both Infantry MOS/specialty and assignment to an infantry duty position at Bde or lower level is required for award of the CIB. However, apparently USAR-V made – and DA allowed – some number of exceptions to policy concerning MOS and the award of the CIB for troops serving with Inf units during Vietnam. That’s the reason why SoMeOnE wHo We AlL kNoW aNd LoVe has a CIB that appears to be legit despite according to his official records never serving in an Infantry-coded duty position while in Vietnam.

I’ve not been able to find a copy of the actual USAR-V reg detailing those USAR-V exceptions. However, I have seen a ABCMR decision that (1) references the USAR-V reg and (2) clearly indicates some number of exceptions existed. The ABCMR doesn’t screw up stuff like that.

That ABCMR decision is linked somewhere in comments to this site. I’ll see if I can find it and post the link here if I’m successful.

          • Hondo says:

Addendum: found the decision. See para 11 on page 3 of

The file is RTF, so you might have to download it and open it with Wordpad (or some other program that handles the RTF format, if you’re using Apple or Android OS).

          • Mick says:

            Army-types on Team TAH:

While we’re on the subject of badges, what’s going on with those Army jump wings in the image that’s posted second down from the top?

Is there such a thing as Army jump wings with a Ranger tab attached to the top of them?

  6. Silentium Est Aureum says:

Says a lot that they kept him around after the first time he deserted.

Imma take a wild guess and say his discharge was somewhere in the less than honorable category.

  7. His ribbon rack isn’t even in the proper order, since when does the NDSM come 1st ?

After reading and getting a tear in my eye about the passing of a true hero and exceptional airman that was a POW (Lt.Col Leo Thorsness)…. this phallic squeezing anal yodeler known as Dic Davis comes along to disgust me

    • AW1Ed says:

      “…this phallic squeezing anal yodeler…”

sgt. v wins the interwebs today!

    • ChipNASA says:

I believe that the entire recommendation below on the WoI that Sgt V asked to include is:

  10. ChipNASA says:

Since old “Dick” Davis here has *nailed* almost all the poser rules, ie. The Fire, Medical Issues, Can’t remember, deserter, must have been the only person in history that “escaped the Hanoi Hilton” (no one ever did).

    ( )

“I move that Richard Davis; phony Green Beret, phony POW, lying embellisher, Fuckbrain, and so stupid he lied to the Green Beret Posers Exposed even after being outed?!?! WTF!!!???, has earned the WALL O INSULTS.”

    • HMCS(FMF) ret says:

    • Tallywhagger says:

      I’ll second that!

    • ChipNASA says:

We have a “Second” (two in fact and maybe the second, “second” can count as an “AYE” but we’ll get a proper vote)
      ….all in Favor say “AYE”.

      • Mick says:

        Och, aye!

      • Ex-PH2 says:

Aye, aye, sir! Fire at Will, and if Will ain’t around, fire and Dick!

        • 2/17 Air Cav says:

OBJECTION! He is a VN Vet and he appears to have gone AWOL after he returned to the states.

          • ChipNASA says:

            Objection noted,
The Wall O insults will note his 2x AWOL/Desertion among the other false claims.

We acknowledge that he did in fact serve in country.

OK with that 2/17 Air Cav?

      • ChipNASA says:

We have multiple “AYE” votes. The “AYE”s have it with the one objection that he doesn’t deserve the whole WoI, however as this is duly noted, this crotch dripping was a 2X AWOL Deserter, so I hope this hurts as much as having (See below) a POW medal loaded into a cannon and shot into his frontal lobe. 11. HMCS(FMF) ret says:

I tired to listen to the phone call… dude is so fucking clueless. Here’s my question – he shows up to the VFW with his records that show he’s not a Green Beret and he starts showing up to events in his phony bling – why didn’t anyone call him out for it?

    • IDC SARC says:

Too many people living in glass houses in the organization?

    • Silentium Est Aureum says:

Cause we need the dues, man!

      • 2/17 Air Cav says:

Time to crank up my VVA tune again. VVA accepts all comers into its membership rolls if 1) The check clears, and 2) The applicant was in military service DURING the official years of the VN war. The VFW doesn’t officially allow that sort of thing but, case after case over the years shows that they either wink at the membership req’mt or purposely overlook it. It would be nice if, at some near point, FOIAs were requested of every member of every post, including (if not most especially) each post’s officers.

        • FatCircles0311 says:

National could skip their shitty magazine for a whole year and use the money to do roll call check on all members. Right now qualification check is done by local posts and frankly to curb dickery, outsiders should confirm what was submitted to be accurate. If that means people get embarrassed and they lose members then so be it. I’m tired of hearing about phonies in the organization.

          • HMCS(FMF) ret says:

I’m with you on that… vetting at the local level just doesn’t seem to happen.

            • OC says:

I applied online to VFW, my qualification being that I spent 1 year active duty in S. Korea 1971-1972.
No DD214 or anything was asked of me.

          • Claw says:

You’ve got the part about a shitty magazine right.

I’m a VFW life member and get a mag every month, but all the issues sent so far this year are really crap.

No more historical stuff, just feel good stories and advertising.

Not saving them for later reading. Just a quick glance and into the file 13 bin it goes.

            • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

I COMPLETELY gave the fuck up on even thinking about joining the VFW after the mega-chickenshit stunt their National PAC pulled on endorsements in the 2010 elections, they pretty much endorsed a straight-ticket D-rat vote to include the opponent of Allen West (LTC, USA Ret.).

              Fuck. Them.

          • Robert C Zornes says:

He’s as fucked up as a soup sandwich. Sadly, it seems none of us real SF guys run into them.

  12. Mick says:

From the ‘Danville National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony’ image posted above:

‘Army Staff Sgt. Richard Davis, Danville, who was a member of Special Forces and Marine Corp. Special Ops, and was also a POW in Hanoi…’

    — sigh —

    ‘Special Forces’

    ‘Marine Corp. Special Ops’

‘POW’ (And why do they always want to claim that they were POWs?)

This Stolen Valor bullshit just never ends.

  13. OWB says:

Can’t even imagine just how one goes from being a deserter to the claim of having been a POW and earned a Purple Heart. (Sorry, SF guys – those bother me more than the Green Beret claim, as disgusting as that is.)

But then, I have not seen the circumstances where I’d embellish my own record, such as it was. Nothing heroic, nothing particularly outstanding, but I willingly went where they sent me and did my job well enough to be honorably discharged. That really wasn’t all that difficult to accomplish.

These guys? Disgusting. Low life fools. Liars all.

    • IDC SARC says:

I agree….the pow medal should be inserted into a cannon and fired into his frontal lobe

The rest of the BS is irritating, but the POW medal and PH chap me the most. D-Bag

      • SSG D says:

Don’t fire into frontal lobe, because then I have to spend 5 hours fixing him. Aim for the heart

        • IDC SARC says:

You’re a Douchebag Repair Technician? I figured these days they were all pretty much disposable.

  14. Jeffro says:

    Punchbowl, meet turd.

  15. Sparks says:

    What a Shit Stain.

  16. Graybeard says:

Richard Davis is not a POW.
Richard Davis is not a Green Beret.
Richard Davis is a two-time deserter.
    Richard Davis is a liar.
    Richard Davis is a fraud.
Richard Davis is not honorable in any way, shape, or form.
Richard Davis needs to take a long walk off a short pier – in northern Alaska in December.
Richard Davis needs to be slapped by someone of greater honor than he – I nominate Canckles for the job.

  17. IDC SARC says:

That is a painful video to listen to….gawd

  18. rgr769 says:

This lying SOS did not ever receive a CIB. His record of assignments shows he was assigned to a replacement battalion as a supply clerk. Since I spent three days in one awaiting my assignment and orders to an infantry battalion in the 4th Inf. Div., I have a pretty good idea he was in charge of keeping track of the clean sheets and pillow cases for the barracks and cadre quarters at the replacement compound. The fact that he got that bling in his FOIA is just further proof that some personnel clerks or others will put anything in your records without verification, especially back in the olden days when we all were hand-carrying our own original 201 files from PCS to PCS.

    • Claw says:

544th Repl Co was the go-to place at Cam Ranh Bay.

Now I might, just might, see why he deserted Indianapolis for Colorado Springs the first time, but to desert the second time just when all the new VOLAR goodies were hitting Fort Carson makes no sense.

      Yeah, he’s a Dumbass.

      • rgr769 says:

According to his record of duty stations, he only spent about a month in country. He must have become ill or injured to get sent home so quickly. Maybe he acquired one of those almost incurable maladies from the Steam ‘n’ Cream.

  19. Hondo says:

For completeness: DPAA maintains lists of those who DoD records indicate (1) escaped from captivity and returned to US control during the SEA conflict; (2) returned alive as POWs at the end of the conflict; and (3) are still MIA. These lists can be viewed at

If Davis’ story were true, he’d be on list (1). Only 31 individuals are on that list. None have the last name “Davis”.

There are two individuals on list (2) with the last name “Davis”; one individual with the last name “Daves”; and one individual with the last name “Davies”. None of these four individuals has “Richard” as either their first or middle name.

There are five individuals on list (3) with the last name “Davis”, plus one with the last name “Davies”, who are still MIA in SEA. None of these six individuals has “Richard” as either their first or middle name. One has the first name “Ricardo” – SP4 Ricardo Gonzalez Davis, US Army, from Carlsbad, NM. He was lost on 20 March 1969 in Laos, and remains missing today.

Calling the tool featured by Jonn in the article above “Dick” is appropriate in more ways than one. As is calling him a LSoS.

Yo, “Dick” – being a Prisoner OF War is a bit different than being a Prisoner DURING a War because you were a 2x deserter. Fah’que.

  20. Andy Kravetz says:

I have a question about medals for a different person. I don’t think he’s faking or lying but I don'[t know what he has. I am NOT trying to hijack but I need to get something within a day or two. Is there anyone who can email me ( to help. Guy’s a 100yo WWII vet who has forgotten what he earned. No time to get official records.

Again, I apologize for asking but I tried to email Jonn to no avail. And I believe the ppl here know what they are talking about. So, sorry sorry sorry but please help.

    • Hondo says:

      Check this link:

Purportedly, it contains a fax number for “time sensitive” FOIA requests. Not sure of the details regarding how that works, because I’ve never done that personally.

Link is contained in Part 3 of the FOIA article series I wrote some time ago. It’s found under the “Military Records” link near the site’s top banner.

      • TheCloser says:

If he was in the Navy, try this link:

It only give personal awards, and I’m not sure how far back it goes, but it does accept service number (vice SSN).

        • Andy Kravetz says:

I don’t think he’s lying. I think he earned a Purple Heart three times but he can’t remember. I have a photo of his medal with what appears to be three dots or clusters. Is that a sign of earning a PH 3x?

          • IDC SARC says:

I don’t believe it. He was cognizant enough to give details about everything except anything to do with any of his claims including the PHs.

          • TheCloser says:

3 clusters indicates 4 awards (the medal counts as one).

            • Andy Kravetz says:

If either of you guys can shoot me your email, I’ll send you the picture. It’s for an Honor Flight story. I honestly don’t doubt the guy. He wasn’t trying to be a hero. We got his name through the Honor Flight group. He’s 100 years old, served with a FA unit in the Pacific.

              • IDC SARC says:

Oh, you’re talking about somebody besides Richard Davis. I didn’t read up far enough. My apologies.

                • Andy Kravetz says:

all good. I just have this picture and I think he earned 3 PH in WWII. He was with the FA in the Pacific. Said he was at New Britain which would put him with the 40th ID. Looking for something on line to see. Story is due tomorrow at 5pm.

        • Bobo says:

The Navy link didn’t come up with nothing for me. I left with a GCM, SSDR, and Expert Pistol Medal in 1990.

          • TheCloser says:

NAM and higher shows up for me (3 of my 18 ribbons/medals) and I only retired a couple of years ago.

          • Silentium Est Aureum says:

Basically, only my NAM’s show up there as well.

  21. HMC Ret says:

It’s painful to listen to the interview. This guy is buried neck-deep and continues his bullshittery. Man, just give it up, come clean and get on with life.

  22. HMC Ret says:

I see on many ‘Record of Assignments’ the ‘casual’ entry. What exactly does it mean? I’m thinking it means he’s between assignments and is a barracks commando until a position can be found. How close am I to the truth?

    • ChipNASA says:

That’s usually what it means and also it can be related to a medical status.
there are many ways you can be on casual status, like if you’re waiting for documentation to be completed or processed (security clearance) or if there’s not a slot for you to join your next assignment…such as training or a school.

    • NormanS says:

They kept me in “casual” status at Ft. Polk after completing BCT, pending orders for transfer to Ft. Wolters. Then an additional fistful of weeks pending assignment to a training flight. And lastly, for about five days pending an AIT assignment after dropping out of W.O.F.T.

It’s nice to see that he’s proud enough of his NDSM to put it on the top of the rack.

I see a Vietnam Campaign Medal in the photo.
Documents say Vietnam Service Medal with 1 BSS.

    What am I missing?

    • Hondo says:

26Limabeans: the close-up of his ribbon rack above shows him wearing the ribbon for the RVN VCM w/1960- device (outboard ribbon, bottom row). The photo of him in what appear to be BDUs below that shows him wearing the US VSM (full-size medal, left breast pocket, outboard). Can’t see the ribbons in that one clearly enough to tell if he’s also wearing the ribbon for the RVN VCM on his BDU jacket as well.

FOIA reply says he rates both; however, on the FOIA reply they called the RVN VCM the “Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon w/60s device”. It’s actually a foreign medal vice ribbon-only.

      • 26Limabeans says:

Tnx Hondo. I only saw the one photo before I spoke. Gotta practice my reading skills. Yeah the campaign medal is an actual medal from a now defunct country. Got mine before they went out of business.

        • Hondo says:

Sorry, amigo. Forgot you’d served there and would know full well that the VCM was a foreign medal vice ribbon-only. My error in forgetting that fact.

  25. Cris says:

Good god! If I knew then how easy it was, I wouldn’t have bothered with serving 24 years. All I have to do is find an old camo top, beret, pick up some bling and fruit salad at the local military surplus store, and viola, instant bad-ass, hero extraordinaire, etc, etc.

Double deuce AWOL Marine Corps special ops supply clerk with infantry awards!

    Sounds legit!

    What a shitbag extreme.

  27. Bobo says:

How does a 76Y rate the CIB that’s in his FOIA results?

    • Claw says:

Well Sir, it’s a toss-up. The Form 2-1 appears to have been reconstructed at some point. There is the first year and a half of his service that is not reflected on the 2-1. May have had a previous tour as it appears he only hit country for about a month in 1969, but the FOIA says he rates two Overseas Service Bars which would account for 12 months in a hostile fire zone. Whether that’s true or not is a question only he can answer.

Maybe 11B that went supply after a couple of years ? Flip a coin.

Of course there’s always the old hand carried records while PCSing shenanigans that we’ve seen occur time and time again.

Bottom line, though, he’s a two time deserter discharged as a buck private, wearing a second award CIB, a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart that are not listed among his decorations and pretty much a goofy Dumbass.

    • Hondo says:

      Bobo, Claw:

Apparently USAR-V made – and DA allowed – numerous exceptions to normal CIB rules for non-Infantry personnel assigned to Infantry units and accompanying them in the field during the Vietnam War.

I’ve never been able to find a softcopy of the old USAR-V reg in question, so I can’t say for sure what those exceptions were. But they did apparently exist.
