Syria shoots down Russian plane.

| September 18, 2018

With friends like this, who needs enemies?

A Russian maritime patrol aircraft with multiple personnel on board was inadvertently shot down by Syrian regime anti-aircraft artillery on Monday after the Syrians came under attack by Israeli missiles, according to a US official with knowledge of the incident

The US official said the regime was actually trying to stop a barrage of Israeli missiles. A second official confirmed that Israel was responsible for the missile strikes on the Syrian regime.
The Russian state news agency TASS reported that a Russian IL-20 military aircraft with 14 personnel on board disappeared over the Mediterranean on Monday. According to TASS, the ministry of defense specified that “the mark of IL-20 went off the radars disappeared during the attack of four Israeli F-16 aircraft on Syrian targets in the province of Latakia.”
The Israelis had fired multiple missiles against targets in the coastal area of Latakia where Russian has based much of its military presence, including aircraft. In an attempt to strike back against the Israelis, the Syrians launched extensive anti-aircraft fire, the official said and the Russian aircraft was hit.
The US found out about the incident because Syrian forces broadcast an emergency search and rescue radio call on an international frequency. The US then got a direct message from another country about the type of aircraft and circumstances of the incident. The official would not identify that country, but it is likely that Russia is the only nation that would know exactly what type of aircraft was shot down.
A spokesman for the Pentagon told CNN that the missiles were not fired by the US military but would not speak as to who was behind the strikes. An Israel Defense Forces spokesman declined to comment on the reports.
It’s a CNN story so it will be Trump’s fault in the end.

Great minds and all that. I’ll take my post down, Dave.

Now we know Syria has antiaircraft missiles capable of downing what is basically a 1950’s era passenger turboprop. P-3’s and P-8’s beware.

Sorry to go off topic here, but this story is just breaking.

‘Sailor dies aboard USS George H.W. Bush flight deck’

‘A sailor died aboard the flight deck of the USS George H.W. Bush while it was out at sea Monday afternoon, according to a Navy news release.

Around 4:45 p.m., the sailor was killed in what Navy officials called a “mishap.” No one else was hurt and the cause of the death is under investigation, according to the release.

Pilots had been conducting carrier qualifications at the time of the death, according to Cmdr. Dave Hecht, spokesman for Naval Air Force Atlantic. Carrier qualifications involve aviators honing their skills launching and recovering fixed-wing aircraft. Those operations aboard the aircraft carrier were suspended following the death, Hecht said.

Hecht called the death a “tragic situation.”

The name of the sailor will not been released until 24 hours after the sailor’s next of kin have been notified, in accordance with Defense Department policy.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family,” Hecht said.

No further details were immediately available Tuesday.

“We ask for your patience and understanding as the crew grieves the loss of one of their shipmates,” the Navy said in the statement.

The aircraft carrier left Norfolk last week to head out to sea in anticipation of Hurricane Florence and has not yet returned.’

Israel could send them a Hallmark card….that always lets people know you are almost sorry.

    “Dear Vlad,

We are simply heartbroken your Syrian allies shot down one of your aging turboprop aircraft that they mistook for a highly advanced jet fighter….have them talk to one of our friends in the floral shop, we can get you a nice deal on a “sorry we blasted one of your aircraft” floral arrangements and gift baskets….they really do smooth things over when you shoot down Russian planes; just ask the Turks….and tell them Bibi sent you.”

  4. Claw says:

Hmmm, Israeli Anti-Aircraft Missiles? Wonder if it involved using the Chaparral Missile System we pawned off on them?

If so, this is probably the first confirmed striking of a target with a Chaparral since 4/61 ADA tried to shoot down the town of Fountain’s water tower back in the late 80’s there at Fort Carson./smile

Syrian anti-aircraft missiles shooting at Israeli aircraft missed and hit a Russian aircraft.

      No Israeli AA was involved.

  5. A Proud Infidel®™ says:

The Israelis attack so the Syrians respond by shiiting a Russkie plane down, do those sand monkeys even know which is the forward end of the AA missiles?

Leave it to Israel to get a two-fer out of an ordinary anti sheep raper strike.

This story should be with the Feel Good stories…Commie bastards shot down, and their turd allies did it while getting fired on by Israel…

I’m smiling way too much over this.

I think the word we are all looking for is, “Schadenfreude”.

And what a lovely word it is today.

    • rgr769 says:

It is a shame good men died serving their country in what is essentially a friendly fire incident. It would not have happened if Vlad and company were not meddling in a civil war of “goat humpers,” as some of you call them.

      • rgr769 says:

I should add that I never use that disrespectful term. I use the more formal term, “humpers of goats.”

This week it’s the Russians meddling in a civil war, next week it’s us meddling in a civil war.

“Perchance he for whom this bell tolls may be so ill, as that he knows not it tolls for him; and perchance I may think myself so much better than I am, as that they who are about me, and see my state, may have caused it to toll for me, and I know not that….
any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.”

“Sayad. What does this red button do?”

      “Aloha Snackbar!!………oh shit”

      • 2/17 Air Cav says:

Putin just took the heat off Israel, calling the event tragic. Once the missiles launched, Syria button pushers went wild. Yes, it turned out to be an “On shit” moment for Sayad and Tarek, neither of whom can be located this day.

No IFF on the ruskie antiaircraft system?
Even the early Patriot had that.
No self destruct option on the missle?
          Even Stinger has that.
What the hell kind of protection did the aircraft have?
Apparently Russian materiel is just as good as it always was.

I guess I’m getting old. I have no love for Russian politicians. If Vlad Putin keeled over tomorrow I would not feel bad. But there’s sadness, I think, imagining how these dozen or so Russian pilots and aircrew rode their mortally wounded beast into the ground, in support of yet another f@#$kin dictator of a third world s@#4hole. I doubt there are Russian families proudly saying “He died for Mother Russia!!!” More likely they are crying.

But again, I’m getting old and tired, so maybe I’m wrong. That whole part of the world just sucks.

They lost their lives in service to their country. I hope their country cares as much as you. And, no, you’re not wrong to feel for them and their loved ones. It was worth saying and I’m glad you said it.

“It’s a cnn story so you know it will be Trump’s fault in the end.” Well duh! Has it not been established that the Trumpster, colludes with the Russians. Even with in the ranks of TAH, there are known Soviet Colluders. Isn’t it a fact that all of Trumpsters tweets are actually secret squierreel monkey codes that gives precise information on the location of disposable assets of Russian hardware and lives, to further embarrass the war mongering Jewish Defense forces trying to suppress the peace loving peoples of Assayed’s Syria?

Russian plane shot down by Russian-manufactured SAM. Some would say poetic justice.
