Former Air Force tech sergeant who defected to Iran charged with spying

| February 17, 2019

spyThe FBI released this undated photo of Monica Elfriede Witt, a former Air Force intelligence specialist, in a wanted poster after she was indicted for espionage by a grand jury on Feb. 8. Witt, who speaks Farsi, defected to Iran and is living in Tehran, according to the bureau. Though she left the service as a technical sergeant, it is unclear what rank she held when this photo was taken. (FBI)

These hurt the worst. An Airborne Crypto Specialist Farsi speaker, then worked with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Left the service as an E-6 and with her skills and clearance she would have been snapped up by any one of several big name Government Contractors, or just jump over to a lifetime GS gig. But no, she puts on the hijab and sells out her companions and country.

A former Air Force counterintelligence specialist, a technical sergeant, who defected to Iran about five years after leaving the Air Force, has been charged with revealing classified information as well as research about her former colleagues to representatives of the Tehran government, prosecutors said Wednesday.

A Justice Department indictment charges former Air Force Tech. Sgt. Monica Elfriede Witt, who defected in 2013 and is currently at-large, along with four Iranian hackers who, prosecutors say, used the information she provided to target former colleagues in the U.S. intelligence community.

The indictment says the four Iranians were acting on behalf of the government-linked Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. All four remain at large.

Witt, who was born in El Paso, Texas, joined the Air Force on Dec, 17, 1997, and served as an airborne crypto linguist, according to information provided by the Air Force. She later changed jobs and became a special agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Her last assignment before separating as an E-6 on June 12, 2008, was with the 2nd Field Investigations Squadron, Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, the Air Force said.

Bets she’s got a big ax wound too.

    Twunt

  2. IDC SARC says:

Naughty girl…step this way for your confinement physical.

  3. The Other Whitey says:

I will never understand how any female can embrace a religion/culture that regards women as chattel property instead of people. What kind of pathology do you think makes that seem like a good idea?

  4. Toxic Deplorable B Woodman says:

Said it before (most likely on another site), but try her “in absentia”, find her guilty, (followed by a first class hangin’ –oops, wrong movie), then drone her sorry ass. If there happens to be collateral damage, so be it. I’ll shed no tears.

  5. Martinjmpr says:

Earlier reports identified her as a captain. Also, in the photo above I’m pretty sure that’s an officer’s uniform she’s wearing (no discs around the US on her lapel.)

Stolen valor? Or is there more to this story than we’re hearing?

    • Commissioner Wretched says:

For a time after the McPeak uniform changes, all AF personnel wore officer insignia on the lapel (once the insignia was reinstated – McPeak eliminated it). It was few years after that when the circles around the U.S. were returned for enlisted personnel.

      • Garold says:

I recall McPeak also introduced TQM (Total Quality Management) that died a rather quick and silent death. There were also the Velcro name tapes with ranks on them for about a year.

        • OWB says:

That TQM was about as bad an idea as anything ever was. Complete waste of time. Kept everyone busy doing charts, questionnaires and other useless stuff while letting the actual work go undone. Stupid.

          • AW1Ed says:

It poisoned the Navy as well. Industrial practices as applied to military operations was a disaster. We’re not building widgets and we don’t build and manage; we break things and lead.

Another good idea fairy down in flames.

          • Hack Stone says:

Hack Stone had to sit through a few of those TQM presentations back in the 1990’s. Now he has to just endure all of that required corporate training. Fortunately, the Ethics In Government Contracting course required by the proud but humble woman owned business that sells software to the federal government is a breeze, just one question, and the answer is “Don’t get caught.”

  6. 5th/77th FA says:

As was commented on another thread, re the death of CPO Kent. Hopefully in the next little while we’ll see a news blurb about a rocket barrage from the USNS Monsoor took out a traitorous, murdering trash from hell, ex AF whatever spy bitch, along with her co-horts and other needed collateral damaged persons. Film at 11.

    • AW1Ed says:

As a Navy Helo Aircrew in 1979, I approved of this comment.

Desert One, there but for the Grace of God..

      • SFC D says:

AW1Ed, did you ever fly with Bob Dalton?

        • AW1Ed says:

Perhaps. Name is familiar, I knew a Jim Dalton for sure. Time and aircraft?

          • SFC D says:

I really couldn’t tell you what aircraft with any accuracy. Commanded HS-9 when it stood up on the Nimitz, was XO on the Tripoli when he retired in 1980.

            • AW1Ed says:

That would make him an H-3 Sea King helo jock. Not my bird, so doubtful at best.

Did my first real SAR jumps from an H-3 in the St. Johns River, NAS Jacksonville, FL. Big bus, much larger than my H-2 Sea Sprite.

  7. HMC Ret says:

It would be a bitch if her perp walk was off a military aircraft, in handcuffs, surrounded by SEALs. She could then disappear into the bowels of the military prison system until it is time for a court martial followed by a few decades in Leavenworth. I’m thinking she is highly treasured in muzzieland and will be until all useful information has been obtained. As soon as she pisses off the muzzies, they will see if she can fly from an eight-story rooftop.

  8. Ex-PH2 says:

You guys are far too easy. What she deserves is capture, trial, and complete ostracism by other humans. And no access to outside media of any kind, no TV, no movies, no nothing, Permanent isolation – it will drive you nuts unless you like being alone.

That, or send her down to that pleasant Federal prison in Texas, where a couple of guards were recently murdered by inmates.

  9. Andy11M says:

While some may disagree with me, I think the person is a suitable candidate for a extrajudicial drone strike.

  10. Claw says:

Undated photo = Sometime between her enlistment date and the start of GWOT. No NDSM in her AF starter ribbon rack.

    • USAFRetired says:

The top ribbon in the rack appears to be an Aerial Achievement Medal. Not a great picture even blown up can anyone see an AFEM in the pic?

    • Bill T says:

It also appears that there is no oak leaf on the Good Conduct Medal. If she has a longevity medal that puts the picture at between 4 and 6 years if her rack is up to date in the photo. Assuming she was eligible for the next GCM.

  11. oldgeezer says:

Unfortunately, if she ever returned, the left would make her a hero and the media/Demorats would protct her. Slap on the wrist and then a candidate for the US Senate. NH, MA,VT,NY, NJ or CA, OR , WA and she get elected.

  12. HMCS(FMF) ret says:

She’s a candidate for termination via a “Hellfire”, “Tomahawk” or any other guided munition.

  13. RM3(SS) says:

I have a close relative that’s OSI. This has really shaken up the community.
Here’s the sealed indictment, it’s since been released to the public. She actually made up target packages on her fellow agents.

  14. Mark, RM1 USN ret says:

Maybe the Mossad could drop by and pay her a “visit.”

  15. Cameron says:

Well Monica, if you want to lay with the dogs, then you get the fleas. Be careful getting on the wrong side of the Iranian government. Especially when you are no longer considered useful to them. And there will be nothing we nor anyone else can do help you if that happens. You made your bed, now you can sleep in it.

  16. Contractor1803 says:

Capture her and bring her back to the Supermax in Florence, CO. The isolation would drive her mad.

  17. 26Limabeans says:

Her only hope is FTM and to be sent back here as a different kind of spy.
I think she would like that.

  18. Jeffery Monroe says:

How can any white former Christian female become a bloodsucking woman hating crazy muslim?

  19. Sapper3307 says:

Some stud gave her goat loving.

  20. Comm Center Rat says:

According to the federal indictment her alias is Fatemah Zahra. An online language translation reveals her name means “the mother of all lies and sister of treason.”

  21. USMCMSgt(Ret) says:

With any luck, she’ll eventually become Reality Winner’s cell mate.

  22. Sapper3307 says:

My money says she felt that she was smartest kid in the room her entire life.

  23. AnotherPat says:

She may evidentually want to return to the US.

Look at the situation with this woman:

“Hoda Muthana ‘Deeply Regrets’ Joining Isis and Wants To Return Home”

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/feb/17/us-woman-hoda-muthana-deeply-regrets-joining-isis-and-wants-return-home

“An American woman captured by Kurdish forces after fleeing the last pocket of land controlled by Islamic State says she “deeply regrets” travelling to Syria to join the terror group and has pleaded to be allowed to return to her family in Alabama.”

“Once one of Isis’s most prominent online agitators who took to social media to call for the blood of Americans to be spilled, Hoda Muthana, 24, claims to have made a “big mistake” when she left the US four years ago and says she was brainwashed into doing so online…”

    • 5th/77th FA says:

Saw a blurb on the National Broadcast news on this one last night. I can semi understand the whole “Stockholm Syndrome” from physical captivity, but how dahell you going to let a computer “brainwash” you?

You made your choices, you and your spawn can just live with those choices over there.

    • Mason says:

She was “brainwashed” into travelling halfway around the planet? Going to a place that’s so difficult to get to you have to change planes like six times and get smuggled into the country?

Yeah, I believe her as much as I believe Jussie Smollett.

      • AnotherPat says:

        5th/77th FA & Mason:

Yep, that seems to be the new trend now for what I call the “Blame Excuse” Syndrome, i.e. brainwashing via Internet, Computers/Social Media, etc.etc.

In the article, she also blames her parents for a “strict” upbringing…

        It’s always someone else’s fault…

I feel sorry for her children, not her. They may have to pay the price for what she did.

And now THIS woman wants to return to the UK:

“Shamima Begum Who Fled UK To Join ISIS Has Given Birth Say Family:

      https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/feb/17/shamima-begum-who-fled-uk-to-join-isis-has-given-birth-say-family

      • 5th/77th FA says:

Sympathies for these children, yes some.

Give a damns for these women…no..none!

I, like many others in our age groups was taught at a very early age that actions have consequences. The life and decisions you made, may become a fecal matter sandwich and you have to take a bite out of it. Or as the Preacher may say at Communion Service…Eat ye, all of it.

  24. Ret_25X says:

You guys are doing this all wrong.

You see, what you do is, publicly pay her a large sum of cash making it look like she has been spying on Iran.

Then you place BOLO in the HUMINT systems making it look like she is an agent on mission.

Then you give her a ride to the market place.

Everything else will take care of itself.

This may or may not have been done in practice before, so consult the lessons learned site for TTPs.

Alternatively, snatch her out of Iran with her buddies. At about 30,000 feet through them out one at a time with about 500 pounds of lead secured to them.

If they can fly down to the ground without injury, they are innocent.

  25. A Proud Infidel®™ says:

I’m all for her getting what she deserves whether it’s death at the hands of the Iranians once she’s no longer considered useful to them, Mossad dispatching her in the middle of the night or her being cooped up in Supermax the rest of her life, fucking TWUNT!!!

  26. Doc (FMF) says:

I don’t favor returning her for trial. The left will let her go when they over the WH.

Take her out with a UAV.

  27. Berliner says:

I think she would look great in a form fitting concrete burka. I would say put a couple plastic straws in her nostrils so she could breath but that would not be good for the environment.

Prop her ass up 800 meters downrange and let folks evaluating the new 7.62 Heckler and Koch Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDM-R) chip away.

  28. JTB says:

I feel better now after reading some post here as the thoughts I had worried me….

  29. Luddite4change says:

It wouldn’t surprise me if her defection was tied more to monetary issues than ideology. Looks like she crossed over in 2012/2013, around the time all of those good contracting gigs dried up and DOD went into a hiring freeze with sequestration.
