ChipNASA sends us a pair of articles, and the news isn’t good. The first is a crime.

One Marine dead, another in custody

A shooting Friday in the barracks at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in South Carolina has left one Marine dead and another in custody, according to base officials.

Cpl. Tyler P. Wallingford, 21, was shot and killed, 2nd Lt. Kevin Buss, a base spokesman, said in a statement. Cpl. Spencer T. Daily, 21, is in custody. Both men were aircraft ordnance technicians with Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501.

The second is a training accident.

Marine dies after training accident at Camp Pendleton

A special operations Marine was killed during training at Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corps said Monday.

The member of the Marine Raider unit of the Special Operations Command was injured during a tactical vehicle training exercise Saturday. He was evacuated by a military aircraft, but died Sunday, a Marine spokesman said. Two others were also injured during the training.

Maj. Nick Mannweiler, the spokesman, said the vehicle rolled over during the exercise. Mannweiler said the MRZR, an off-road, four-person vehicle, can hold “a decent amount of ammunition and weapons” and that rollovers are not common. Headquartered at Camp Pendleton, the 1st Marine Raider Battalion is organized, trained and equipped to deploy for worldwide missions as directed by the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command.

The name of the Marine who died will be released after the next of kin has been notified. The Marine Corps is investigating the incident.

It’s been said, but still true- training can be just as hazardous as war. Fair winds and following seas to the two Marines.

The three U.S. Marines killed on Monday in an IED blast in Afghanistan while in a convoy near Bagram Airfield were identified and included a firefighter from New York.

The Taliban suicide bombing killed Staff Sgt. Christopher Slutman, 43, Cpl. Robert A. Hendriks, 25, Sgt. Benjamin S. Hines, 31.

They were the first U.S. Marines killed in combat in over three years, as military.com noted.

Remind me again the purpose of our presence there? Fair winds and following seas, Marines.

To the Marine who killed his Brother, I have no words except…Why?

Pendleton’s topography is like the rest of San Diego’s and SoCal’s in general: steep as hell. I’ve spent my adult life traversing shitty two-track sidehill roads like that. A momentary distraction or mistake will cost you dearly. Inertia is an evil bitch, and so is her sister Gravity.

Open Threads are for off topic stuff.

Probably not universal thought, since nothing else is, but if something is not important enough for you to remember until the next open topic thread is posted, it’s probably not important enough to bother the rest of us with in the midst of a discussion of something else.

  5. Green Thumb says:

    Rest well, Marines.

  6. Wilted Willy says:

May God Bless these Marines and their families during this tragic time. I will be praying for all of you, fair winds and following seas Marines!
